Another one bites the dust..........

is with heavy heart, and after 3 weeks since the incident, I have been able to bring myself to report that I am no longer the owner of an S.2.
In a brief Biblical downburst of rain whilst travelling south on the M40 between J2 and 1A, I was involved in a 3 car collision which resulted in my car coming to rest blocking the middle lane. Had to barge the partly jammed door open to get out then run for the hard shoulder with traffic baring down. Miraculously, no one was injured, police called,2 police cars and 2 ambulances arrived plus highway agency to sweep up, and 3 removal trucks. No further action was taken by the police against any party. However, an independent witness stopped and was adamant that one of the cars had clipped my rear causing me to lose control. Cut a long story short, I spoke to the insurance company last Friday and accepted their offer for the (woefully)underinsured sum of £5k less the policy excess of £335. They written to the witness and are awaiting his reply. Not sure where I go from here, it could be the end of an era. Cost of finding something comparable with 22 years continuous OPC/Indy history and £18k+ spent in the last 12 years during my ownership is depressing.

Depending on the insurance decision, this could impact heavily on my future premiums, which for last year, was £165 for 3k miles. In the meantime, take this as a salutary lesson and make sure your car has appropriate cover.

Haven't done a lot of searching in the usual places, but if anyone knows of something worthy of consideration, please feel free to post or P.M me.

Commiserations, always sad to see one go, but glad you and everyone else involved walked away. Thanks for sharing too - a valuable reminder to make sure your cover is adequate. Best of luck with your claim and finding a suitable replacement. (Worth noting that not many 26-year-old cars would have held up that well to the punishment too.)

Best,

Gutted for you. A horrendous way to lose the car. Glad you walked away though which is the main thing. Chin up, things will get better and you seem to have it all in perspective.

Stuart

Massive commiserations to you on your loss. But looks like the car served you well and protected you. You should ask about buying the salvage back especially if your looking for another S2. That way at least some of your car could live on.

Terrible news about the car but as others have said thank goodness you emerged unscathed. Hopefully there will be a happy ending to all this in the shape of another 944 sat on your drive soon.

Ouch. That car took a couple of big hits. I'm expecting that you will feel bruised for a while.

Good that the witness stopped and is being so helpful. Having it registered as a no-fault claim would be good although the insurance is going to go up a little. Get some quotes before being too depressed though; it may not go up as much as you think.

As for finding another car .... well, that's a difficult one. Another 944 would be the obvious choice and I can understand why you'd want to go this route (I'd do the same). Keep your eyes peeled - they do come up occasionally. This one didn't sound too bad, although it may be a bit of a trip depending upon where you are:

Richard-so sorry about your accident -only good thing is that you werent injured as others have already said-I hope the witness makes it
a no blame accident for you. I can totally understand you being absolutely gutted by this as you had lavished a lot of loving care and cash on
a very nice 944S2 over a number of years.
I was only looking at the pictures of our 2 cars the other day.
All very best wishes
Ron

Thanks for your kind words guys, I know there are many out there who have the same affection I did for my 944. It was indeed a big one......I can remember thinking after the first impact 'ouch that's going to be expensive' and after the one when the driver's side rear hit the central barrier spinning me into the middle lane, I thought 'this isn't going to end well'. Did panic a bit when I couldn't get the door open, but managed to unjam it! Good job I didn't have the Saratoga sunroof as I'd have been wearing that as well as the rear hatch glass. I have to say I did feel pretty creaky for a good few days after.

I understand the car has been scrapped rather than broken for spares. I didn't have any way to recover the car or anywhere to strip and then dispose. I'm just starting to look for a replacement, but not interested in a project/patchy past, I'd rather pay a bit more for an enthusiast owned car with solid history and loads bills for recent work done. Not too sensitive about miles if service has been properly maintained. Linen leather preferred, velour cloth not.

Really sorry to read this Richard [:(] You're car was a good one and you'd looked after it too. Thank goodness no one was hurt, but you must be seriously shaken.

At least no one was injured and the S2 took the impact well, hope the independent turns up for you.

Gutted for you, but glad you could walk away, metal can be replaced. If you did want to recover/ move it I have got a trailer and happy to help. Good luck with the search,
Tony

I'd be surprised if the car didn't end up somewhere like DVB. I understand it wasn't of interest to you but my insurer gives me the car in the event of a total loss.

very sorry to see this Wolfie308...glad that you weren't hurt...I know that a long term car can be hard to replace but it's not impossible...hope you find a suitable replacement soon....perhaps a good opportunity to turn to the dark side of boosted power...:)

Let's hope you don't have to take advantage of that option. It would have been of interest, but I had no way to recover, no where to store, limited ability to strip and no way to dispose of the remainder, and financially I couldn't have justified the expense. The car was taken to HBC Vehicle Services in Canvey Island where I presume it was sold trade for parts only.

So so sorry, in fact I know the M40 stretch well as its quite close to where I live also I too own a Red 944S too,,,very chilling as it could have been me!

Importantly, its probably made so many of us think about being able to walk away from such an impact and also what your insurance would settle if a claim is made!!!

Again sorry for your loss and a big thank you for making us think.

I too am local to this area, only a few weeks back I was using this route regularly from Harrow to High Wycombe, it's a pretty fast part of the M40.....oh and I'm also red??

Well, it's been a couple of months and the search for a replacement continues....went to look at an S.2 in West London about 3 weeks ago...advert looked worthy of viewing....125k miles, full stamped history to 2013 and recent service but no bills! Despite MOT a few days earlier, initial inspection revealed......bullet hole in n/s headlight(chipped inside), neither the headlamp nor windscreen washer motors were working, cracked n/s side fog lens at which point I gave up checking the electrics. Removing the boot carpet, I found that not only the declared hole in the spare wheel well, but a botched epoxy putty patch in the o/s cubby, and more disturbingly, a larger hole under n/s battery compartment which felt like it had been lined with something like sandpaper [:(]

Luckily it was a nice day and I was able to stick my head under and poke about a bit and noticed the lower sill trims were missing....no wonder as all the mountings had rusted away. Also, the diamond markings for the jacking points were missing on both sides and there was clear evidence of blistering on the outside. Couldn't get my phone into the B pillar vents, but I could feel and pulled several chunks of rust. And this is on a car asking near as £9k.

Last Friday, I was planning to view this one in Kent with a serious intent to buy, but sadly I was too slow and a guy came down from Newcastle apparently on Thursday night and no surprise, bought it.

I was so gutted I drank the fridge.

Am beginning to think that at up to £9k I'm going to have to consider other less interesting alternatives. In the meantime, while the weather is fine, I'll put up with using the push bike for local shopping/post etc
