Another Porsche Post mag = yawn !

As one who dont normally complain,,
I felt i had to say that yet another monthly arrives ,,
full of 911s and one tiny pic of a 968,,,,
Our front engined babys never get a qtr of the space the 911s get,,,
i enjoyed the article about George and his car up in Scotland ,,which was a pleasent and welcome suprise,,,,

i so believe the time is well overdue for our cars to get more positive attention from PP,,,,,
No problem with 911s and had some great advice recently re backbox problems and dansk from 911 owners but i still feel our cars are somewhat neglected,,,
the love and ££££ we lavish on our cars especially the turbo chaps plus the price ,,,cost of parts from opc [ £950 + for a backbox] all add up for our cars to be featured much more and in detail,,,,
just to finish,,,,is the 944 section the busiest part of our forum?,,,,,,jasonp
 
it's PCGB, it's always been like that.....one of the reasons TIPEC started many moons ago....mind you I see more 911's than 944 posts on TIPEC pages these days....

I agree Jason, the 944 is underrated big time . There is a big swing in Porsche ownership.. sheds of Boxters and 996's and now older 997's ...cheap and got a Porsche badge on it so I'd guess the membership of PCGB is changing. Used to be classic cars, now you can buy one for well sub £20k and you can pretend it's "special" and impress the neighbours. Sad but I'm a synical sod.

About magazine coverage - Excellence mag in North America is the big non-club mag. Recently the covered an major annual event where the theme was the 924 thru 968. Only about 30% of the photos included in the article had a 924 thu 968 in the photo and many of those were in the background. Not sure why they would cover an event and not promote the "stars" of the show...

I entirely share your sentiment. However, despite what we may want to believe, the 924/44/68 are still viewed as being the 'poor man's Porsche'. They don't have the cachet or following of the 911 of any era and I don't think that will change, no matter how great our cars are.

Having been along to one 'meet' for my region confirmed my view. The place was jammed, wall-to-wall with 911's of almost every era but with a heavy bias to things from the 997 model and onwards. There were a couple of (new) Boxsters and a smattering of Cayman's. There was one very old 356 speedster that looked simply beautiful but, on closer inspection, wasn't actually made by Porsche at all - it was a very good (and very expensive) rep from Chesil. People were friendly but it struck me that it was a bit of a gathering of chaps with nice cars that happened to be Porsches. A ratty old 944 fitted in less well than the fellow with a new M-series BMW, or the Aston-owning chap who happened to be passing and who stopped to see what was going on.

This is one single example of one meet from one region (and probably the most affluent region in the country). However I described the outing to a very good friend who owns a 928 and his comment was "The worst thing about owning a Porsche is the other Porsche owners". I think he may have been very close to the truth.

Having said that, I think that this part of the forum is indeed the busiest bit of the PCGB website and I have met some great people through it. So carry on posting chaps, it's good to have you all here! [:)]

You want to try going anywhere in an old Guards red 924S trackday car! Only the enthusiasts bother .I would put it down to the cheap leasing plans now available & possibly threatened by BoE policy if its affecting the debt levels in UK-how else do many people afford not only fancy houses,even fancier kitchens & bathrooms,a new lounge suite every 2 months(if TV adverts are anything to go by),fancy holidays more than twice a year,& roll up in Porsches or Chelsea tractors that HP would cost £1000 pm alone?

It doesn't bother me, their loss...I remember one evening at the 'Ace cafe'...people doing the tyre kicking rounds as per usual..lots of 911's....I was sitting outside next to my car having a drink with other like-minded folk when this city gent walking around with a 'drop dead gorgeous' young lady in tow admiring the cars got to mine. When she spotted mine she made some comment along the lines of 'what a beautiful car' the guy immediately rebuked her spouting 'it's not a real Porsche' and tried to pull her away....she was not impressed with his behaviour and just smiled admiring the car.....clearly a lady of good taste, well except in men...:)

I've had a 944 all my life and bought and still own my first car which I bought before I past my test at the age of 17 and that is a 1986 944 lux in bright alpine white. And since I was 17 I had all the comments like this that you can imagine! The funny thing was that those people all had there parents but them there car and most of the time they were £100 rust buckets normally ford fiestas 1.1popular plus ??

I just used to laugh at them and not rise to it becuase I didn't need too??

i always thought at some point i would own an older/air cooled 911 and almost bought a 964 a couple of years back but its one of the only 911s i think is pig ugly,,,,
IF the " poor mans " porsche still applies then thats very very sad and where does that leave boxsters,caymens,,and 996s?...
A good few of those three can be had for 2 packets of pringles and an orange lucozade lol,,,,,jasonp


 
My first Porsche was a 944 and after many variations of 911s im really enjoying owning
one again . Plus the " hairdresser " boxster ! I just do my own thing and dont care much
about what people think . Quite a few Joe Public have thought my Guards Red 944s were
Ferrari's ...
 
Sounds a lot of you would benefit by moving Region.[:)] Our meets usually have everything from 356 (original built by Porsche kind) to 991 TS - and most models in between. No looking down noses or "poor man's Porsche" attitudes in these parts.[;)] In fact the 928 get more attention than the other one!
 
So, going back to the OP and his wish to see more articles in PP, the answer is simple. When did you last submit an interesting ownership piece to the editor for inclusion? Quite straightforward to do and will give the rest of us a great story to read. I certainly fondly remember my 924 and 944 days and have had plenty of non rear engine Porsches and find good owner stories of all persuasions very interesting.
PP is not just bought in articles, it's what we as a club make of it and variety is the key to making it a successful publication. As you say the 944 section of the Forum is by far the busiest, so get writing!

and with respect i asked if the 944 forum was the busiest as i wrongly assumed the 996 would be busier,,,,
lack of info and pics of front engined cars has been going on for many years and with the amount of 911s out there then i dont expect it will change but i would love to be wrong,,,,jasonp

Sorry but, you are wrong.

We have just had a wonderful day at the PCGB concours d'elegance at Ragley Hall.

The winning car was a 10 year old Cayman. The runner up was a 9 year old Boxster. Lovely front engined cars featured heavily and picked up silverware.

Any suggestion that the modern and current PCGB has a chip on its shoulder regarding non 911s is bizarre. The 944 Register Secretary Mike Pollock quite rightly just picked up an award for his amazing contribution to the Club.

My first Porsche (and still my wife's favourite) was a 944 lux.

Enjoy your fabulous cars and your fabulous club. We cater, successfully, for all.
 
Interestingly, front cover of PP , from Classics at the Castle, 50th Anniversary of 911S and on the cover is a 356 with a 996 Reg plate. My region 19 shows a picture of nothing but Pringle Porsches.
i was lucky to have a new 944 back in 1984, great car and sadly missed, had to be chopped due to family in favour of a Shogun after 4 years of fun.
think Oil puts it well(sorry Oli, couldn't resist that)...the worst thing about owning a Porsche is.......
As Ive said, Porsche ownership has changed but the Classics (pre90's) will always have class and iconic status including the 924.

I would agree with this Graham, no matter which Marque you follow they all lost purpose after the 80's, I guess this in part is due to progress, bureaucrats trying to make the cars safer resulting in more weight and uglier lines to keep pedestrians safe. The trouble is during this process cars have lost their soul, that 'drive by the seat of your pants' feeling is long gone not to mention looks. Now yes I'm a 944 man which for me has to be the turbo but who can deny the beautiful lines of the 930, especially in guards red, such an iconic car. IMHO there is nothing in the fleet today that can match the 930 or the 951 for looks and purpose, true drivers cars. You can keep your 'jelly moulds' thank you very much...... bring back the 80's....:)
