Antidote to the 718's Disappointing Sound?

Hot and noisy! Begs the question of why haven't Porsche turbocharged a flat six in the Cayman? Obvious answer of course being they want to hold it back against the 911 range but Porsche have had a car which out handles the current base Carrera and often the S being even quicker around the Weisach test track ever since the days of the 924, it really is time they fully developed the Cayman and Boxster to show what they can do with it and not just leave it to the aftermarket.

 
I thought that question had been answered in as much as they couldn't fit it all in? But maybe that was just an excuse....[;)] As for the OP, never mind the heat, bring your ear plugs!

 
It seems that the installation requires significant mods to the engine bulkhead and includes a perspex panel, so some sound attenuation is achieved.

However, I reckon ear plugs would be desirable judging by the fact that the (auto?) text fails to keep up with the tester's speech when he gives the car some welly..!

A revamp to the rear boot floor would probably allow modification to the plumbing for a turbo for an intercooler, it just couldn't take the standard turbo kit of the new 911's, they've done similar things in the early days of installing turbos and mod's to the headers to sweep the pipes forward and reduce the size of the cats and fit turbos there while being tight would have some possibilities

Yes I completely agree, I have just taken delivery of a 718 Cayman S and I can't say that I am disappointed by the noise or the performance. I think it is time for everyone to move on.

It IS disappointing if you love normally aspirated engines, no I DON'T have to get used to it and no it ISN'T time to move on!!!

 
Hey! Come on chaps, my original post was just light-hearted and not intended to raise offence or serious debate on this topic.

Although I'm very happy with the sound of my 987.2, I can assure you that I've no axe to grind in the seemingly endless N/A versus turbo debate. Each to their own....and long may it be.

I don't think it's turbo v N/A. Having driven a 718 Cayman for 6 days as a loaner while mine was in for work and covered around 500 miles, I think it's more about 6 v 4. My 6 pot turbo sounds pretty good to me and after 7 years still puts a smile on my face each and every time. Frankly I don't think the current 4 pot turbo on offer with the 718s would ever do that - it drones and sounds harsh under hard driving - to my damaged ears! That aside it is a fabulous car - love the handling, looks, interior, PCM and the way it gets down the road. Odd really as I had a Scooby for a few years and that sounded great. I honestly really wanted to love everything about the 718 but, for me, the engine just doesn't feel or sound special enough. Still, the Gen 2 will be along in a few years![;)]

 
Let's just say the 718 is a different sound to the flat 6. It was obvious it would sound different those who prefer the flat 6 sound may not move on to the 718 and stick with the last of the 981 incarnations .

But for those moving onto a 718 or a first purchase of the model iam sure went into it knowing the 718 sound.

It's not 4 vs 6 for me - it's all about throttle response and the feel under your right foot. No turbo comes close to NA.

 
Each to their own and all that! We all have preferences and it's not as simple as "getting used to it" and "moving on" if something you love is going forever and being replaced by something you don't like.

 
Prepare to be very disappointed in the future then David.

Unfortunately, I can't see the trend reversing but we should see the gradual adoption of supplemental 24V/48V electric supercharging to the turbo set-up which should improve throttle response and eliminate turbo lag; although with drive-by-wire throttles being adopted universally, even that term is somewhat dubious.

Then you throw IC engine/electric hybrids into the mix...! Things are changing very rapidly.

Indeed they are, and that's why I'm planning on running my Cayman GTS until the end of my days. Aside from a few years of (unobtainable) GT cars I won't be able to buy a new NA sports car again.

 
You could take a punt on an MX5. Mazda seems to be the only manufacturer willing to buck the current trend.

I said sports car, not hairdressers car :p Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ is another.

All too slow though, built to a price and not thrilling like a Porsche.
