Any existing Spyder owners taking 981 Spyder?

Hi All,

Anyone else having my dilemma? I currently have a 987 Spyder, bought new in 2010 now with 11000 miles on clock. I still love it! I have a LOI with my local OPC for a 981 Spyder but really do not know whether to proceed. I know its a bit premature as details of the new car are not yet available but what will 981 have to be like for you to change? My view is that it needs the same lightweight/stripped out philosophy (my current car only has radio and sports seats, sports exhaust and full leather added to base spec plus PDK - no A/C or PCM), unique bodywork (humps!!) and perhaps a little more power than current GTS - though I have to say the current Spyder is quite fast enough. Not concerned over practicality of roof as I rarely drive roof up anyway though I have been told by OPC that a new roof has been developed for 981.

What are your thoughts?

Any roof improvement will be a blessing. Maybe a 1 piece affair or a Targa type fitting i know it will still a manual fit but for those cars used on a more daily basis an improvement would be welcomed

Have to say it has taken you a long time to find the www of the Spydermen why have you not posted earlier ??[;)] [:D][:D]
Like you have no idea what the new car will look like .It will have to be very special for some on here to trade in myself included and I recon you will have to find the best part off £40K to change for that you could still keep your Spyder and buy Cayman R .
Post up some pics of your car .

Until the spec is announced and the confirmation that it will have our bespoke bodywork ie humps no dilemma carry on enjoying the original. I have a LOI but without the dilemma for now at least [:D]

Hi Brian, only recently discovered that access to forum was possible without joining club. I have been PCGB member a few times over the years but didn't really get a lot out of it - used to enter concours but once I was in fortunate position of being able to buy new, this seemed a bit pointless!

I will post some pictures once I've learned how. Am using my ipad at the moment and it seems that it is easier to post photos from PC so will do that if I can in next couple of days. My car is Carrara White with Carrera Red full leather interior - might be a bit bright for soime but I love it! Done 11000 miles now - in the dry! In fact, car has never been washed - in the conventional sense with bucket/hose and sponge. Cleaned after nearly every trip though - well I am retired (early!!) so time isn't a problem !!

Cheers

John

Nice sounding spec if you want me to post pics just email across [;)]

Since discovering Autoglym Rapid Detailing my car hasn't seen any H20 after each dry weather only run a quick spray and she is already for next trip out

Thanks for the reply ..sound nice with the Red interior .Mine is one of the limited Red ones around and one of only two in Scotland.
Your's and Robert's one must be the only two in the U-K that has never seen water [:D]

keeps the wanabes away from them with that tent ;-)

GT4 and 987.2 Spyder is my garage for 2015, new Spyder won't match the old one but the GT4 looks like its the real deal.

A few pictures as requested -if i've done it right!!

Thanks for the offer re pictures. i think I just "cracked it" via Photobucket.

Yes, I use the Autoglym Rapid Detailer as well - also use a "magic mop" to pick up any dust first. seems to work well, no "swirls" and paintwork is as good as new.

You expecting the new Spyder to be between £80-85K?

I'm first on a list but I can't imagine I be persuaded to part with that amount to change, no matter how good it's claimed to be.

I am with you GT4 sounds very promising but Spyder to good to give up.
As our Spyders were slow to sell at launch, due to the "tent" I think, it is likely any new Spyder will have an improved roof.
If this is correct it is good news for us as it will be hard to fit a sophisticated roof that will leave the unique look and light weight.

I'm with you on that. For me anything above £65k - including options , will require seriious thought! IMO no Boxster can be worth more

Seriously! A Boxster with more usable performance than say a base 991 Cabrio for £65k+ would surely be a bargain

If you don't need rear seats and bragging rights at the bar then the best handling, riding & looking convertible in the Porsche range is without doubt the Boxster

Not to mention the more pleasing looking dashboard with no sports chrono wart stuck on top of dash roll[&o]

When I had the pleasure of talking to the 986 head of design Harm Lagaay he was keen to explain that unlike the 996, which was an engineering compromise, the 986 with its brilliant new chassis and mid engine lay out was in another league for handling and ride comfort

Perhaps I can be persuaded then - you are not a Porsche sales man are you? If not, perhaps you have missed your vocation !!

I have 2 separate LOI at different OPC's and both are number 1. However i just cant see the new one being unique. For me it has to be very low limited numbers, the humps and something special about it.

My guess is that the roof is similar to the 991 Targa.

NEVER[]Do you realise how much that roof weighs over and above the normal cabrio Base Cabrio Manual 1520kg Base Targa 1540kg

Without the humps: Without the suncap: without shedding some kg's it isn't worthy of the name Spyder imo[:(]
