Anyone got an Iphone ?

I know its a bit off topic but can anyone give me an honest appraisal of the iphone.
I am seriously thinking of purchasing 2x contracts with CPW and 18 months is quite a commitment.
What are they like to use as a cellfone ?

father in law has one and hes a massive IT Geek, he thinks its amazing still now. got to be good if he thinks it is! ive played on the net a few times and watched a few vids, and have to say its very impressive!

The iPhone is a great piece of technology but please be aware of some of the limitations of the iPhone that some people are not aware of:

You can't send or receive MMS messages (multi media messages)
You cannot bluetooth Photo's, MP3's or videos to other mobiles (or receive them).
You can't text messages to multiple receipients.
You can't record video's with the camera, just take photo's
The camera has no Zoom or flash.

Other than missing these functions (that we have come to expext on most mobile phones these days), its a great piece of kit although very expensive at £899 (£35 x 18 months plus £269).

Regards
Simon

There are a lot of rumours kicking about that there will be an updated "˜second generation' iPhone announced in May/June.

I have one and wouldn't be without it now (1 month on).

The phone is fine, typical O2 coverage.
The camera is a 2megapixel jobbie which I actually think is a bit rubbish. The photos are not great (it's fine for a quick snap but that is all).
I have never had it working on a PC, but with my Powerbook and G5 Mac's it syncs quickly via iTunes.
Touch Screen is fab, internet browsing is intuitive and fun. resolution is great. Photos put onto it (from a good camera) show good colour and resolution.

Dr Niceguy has also given you some false info as you CAN send texts to multiple contacts. I do so on a regular basis. You can receive MMS's via the iPhone. It stores the media part of the file on your O2 account server and you then download it (quick and easy although not as easy as opening up a message and seeing a photo I agree)

I used to have to walk out the house with a Mobile, a ipod a laptop and a iPaq handheld device to do meetings and general work...I now just take my iphone!!!

It's a software upgrade which should allow for bluetooth (supposedly the hardware is already in the original phones - source MACWORLD) and inclusion of G3 as a hardware piece (now delayed until november if you believe the magazines)

I have used Apple products for business and at home for coming up to 15 years. I am a what I suppose Apple would call a perfect customer - hate PC's, and always looking forward to the next Apple release.

One thing I've come to learn though with Apple... question buying the first versions of anything they release. Apple are a very dynamic and forward-thinking company, and speed is of the essence in the very competitive markets they play in. Unfortunately this often means they need to release products to the market before they have been fully tested over an adequate period of time. It's not necessarily Apple's fault - the market demands new and more exciting stuff all the time.

I considered getting the iPhone when it was first released in the UK. I've decided to wait for the next version which I'm sure will be along before Christmas. I'm looking forward to seeing what they change... better camera? video capability? MMS straight to phone? How will V2 make V1 look like a brick? what else?

I went to New York recently and decided to buy a Mac Book Air to replace my iBook from the Apple Store on 5th Avenue. The day before my flight to the US I went along to my Apple retailer in UK to check one out. One of the sales people there told me in no uncertain terms NOT to buy one. He demonstrated how slow the processor is compared to a G5 Book. Apparently, the battery is built in to the unit and cannot be replaced without sending it back to Apple - which means on the rare occasions when it crashes you can't reboot by taking out and refitting the battery. Again I was told to wait for V2 or V3 to arrive which will be much, much better.

If you HAVE to have the iPhone now then buy one, they're a great product, if you can wait I think the next version will be so much better again.

I've had two [] (make sure you get the insurance, long story).
If you use a Mac user and want to sync your appointments using iCal and keep your Safari bookmarks etc then yes it is fantastic there are a few frustrations (cant forward texts or text images) but I can't do without it.
If you are a PC user I am sure there are better products out there feature-wise.
RSGulp - re MacBook, you can just hold down the start button for 5 secs then should restart without need to remove the battery when frozen.

Agreed, that's what the manual says about my iBook too. But on two occasions in the past year nothing would make it come back to life until I removed the battery from the back then refitted it. Unfortunately this can't be done with the new MacBook Air. []

personally, I don't think it matters what version you buy there will be a newer better one out not long after you buy it. Given up waiting for technologt to get faster, better, smaller and just buy it to have fun and learn from it. I find everything has a price drop about a week after I buy it.... I was obviously a bad person in another life:)

I had the first apple pda (Newton) back in 1995.. Been apple ever since. Great products!

thanks guys brilliant. its just what I wanted honest frank appraisals from UK users.
I think there is a current contract for the 8Gb version for only £25.00 per month I may be wrong.
Re the G3 aspect Frankly it is nice to have on the odd occassion you see something and want to capture and send the moment to a friend. I have used a Nokia 6600 synergy phone for years and I have probably only sent about 12 multimedia calls or texts in that time.Never used the internet email access facility .

I tried a 02 Mini S XDA for a couple of years and same there found the screen too small to do anything practical with WinM5 or internet.

I use a lifebook notepad daily with 8" touch screen and its brilliant I just wish someone would bring out a true all-in-one handheld with a 5"-6"- touch screen with windows and 3G phone and camera and GPS.

Dr Niceguy .....sooooooo you hav bin givun mi false in...formatshun ya ?(gestapo accent) ve vill deal wiv you later [;)]

I say go for it. Of course there will be other versions coming to market in the near future, but if you wait for the next 'more improved' model to hit the market then you'll never take the plunge and buy anything. As soon as products hit the shelves they are out of date so you've just got to accept that. My dad has the iTouch and the user interface is just amazing. My only thought with the iPhone though is due to its lack of proper keys you loose that tactile operation. I can text and operate my phone without looking at the keys, i couldn't do that with an iPhone.

Just like Porsches?
(he says cunningly bringing an OT thread full-circle back to the reason why we're all here.) [:D]

Honestly, my Mac has probably crashed 3 times in the 2 and a half years I've had this one. My partner's Dell has crashed 3 times in the last month. []

Hi,

If the information I gave was incorrect, then I apologise but I got it from the O2 customer forum when I was thinking of getting one myself before Christmas.
See here http://customerforum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=39&sid=55d4f75fd85faf0ba70843eae53abff6

These are the current tarriffs (£35 is still the cheapest): http://shop.o2.co.uk/promo/iphonetariffs

I got one at Xmas and I'm techno idiot but I love mine 2 death. Picture quality is brilliant and its real easy 2 use. Only thing is that I dropped mine face down on tiled floor and its shattered badly. Doh!

Turn off automatic browsing if you go outside your provider's coverage - ie continental Europe.

Company I do work for were receiving bills of £4,000 per month as all their pony tails swanned around Paris.

Hi - interesting to hear everyone's views on this phone.

Personall I use a blackberry daily and have the i-phone for development testing - my company builds and design web sites.

I would wait off however for the new Blackberry 9000 - due for release in May / June. By all account going to knock the i-phone in to touch for a semi or full on business user.

Cheers..FB
