Anyone hillclimb their 92/44/68?

Between the rally and endurance racing events I got a bit bored so have just decided I'm going to add hillclimbing to my list of motorsport expenses!

I've just entered the Harewood event on July 4th which will be my first. Never driven it before so will be a bit of a baptism of fire.

Anyone else do it? Any tips for a novice other than go flat out and don't bin it?

Hi Ben,

I've been hill climbing and sprinting just over a year now; last year I was competing in my (now sold) series 1 106 Rallye which was very quick in a not so competitive class, but I've been prepping the 951 to use. It's been around Curborough a few times and I drove it at Cholmondeley Pageant of Power last weekend (scary course!) where it was relatively quick against the proper classic racers.

Overall my advise would be to arrive early to walk the course, use your first run to plan lines so take it easy and allow yourself time to think and then build up speed from there. I'm my (limited!) experience it's best to put in a solid first run so you've set a time and leave any risks for the second run where you can push on a bit. Conditions play a big part once you start approaching the limit and eventually you'll be chasing tenths. It's a lot of fun!!!

Excellent points, thanks!

Will certainly walk the course ahead of P1. Have watched online vids a lot to get a feel for it. Only 10 corners to memorise so not too much.

Have been asking around about tyre pressures. Obviously I'm either used to knobblies or slicks depending on what I'm doing. Guess I'll set these hillclimb tyres up to around 28 cold and see what we see.

Really excited. Actually a bit nervous. Can't wait, been years since I've had this feeling of doing something new!

I Speeded a series one in the early nineties. I couldn't make it competitive against other cars in the class, but I doubt that there are many other similarities between then and now.

Don't try it on R65 tyres!

I have done some hillclimbing and sprinting many years ago (MG Midget) and would heartily recommend it ... great advice to walk the course and, I would add, spend time watching other (RWD) cars and the lines they take (and learn from where ambition outruns ability)

I have a 1986 944 Lux with lowered (only 30mm) with uprated springs, Koni shocks and this has sharpened up the already excellent steering these cars have (IMHO) ... I had looked in the recent past about having a go in the Porsche Speed Championship but, back then, the Class 4 (for NA cars with our power/weight ratio) was dominated by the venerable 924S ... but now I see that class has one 924S and one 944 (you never know, I might even come third in class [;)] - assuming of course I still have some competence left!).

Something I am looking into is the Bugatti Owners Club (posh name for Prescot Hill Climb) 'B' Licence Challenge which is arranged on a handicap basis - see here for details: http://www.prescott-hillclimb.com/usefulinformation/Blicencespeedchampionship.aspx

Good luck,

Rob

Excellent, thanks gents. That one at Prescott looks good. I remember slinging the DS up there years ago, great fun.

Harewood is only 40 minutes from me so no doubt that'll end up as my home course. Apparently it's the longest in the UK but it still looks like a quick nip up someone's drive to me ;)

Sprinting will probably be more rewarding. Hillclimbing here is rubbish compared to the sport enjoyed by our continental cousins.

Hmm, not sure on that for me.

I dont want for track time. What I do want for is horrific danger and hillclimbing seems to offer that.

Was given a V10 R8 the other week by Audi to take lads around Donington for a Mission Motorsport day.

Was quick but just a bit meh. The only real fun was the corners and hitting 141 on the back straight over the bumps.

Unless there is a competitive element I'm really not fussed.

That said I'll try sprinting for sure (see what I did there...) if only for tuning the car in a bit.

I might be up for another curborough day out soon - would be good to get a few 944's together

Should have come to the R13 day at Curborough,Ed on June 14th-I was there in the 924S & Nick in his Eunos -great day as always-the new fig 8 arrangement makes for some drifting opportunities-a 918 was there initially but as the braking is poor below 50mph (relies on regen more )he took it home & came back in a brand new 991Turbo

Hi Ed, I'm booked in for 23rd July if you fancy that? Would be good to have a sit in your S2. My car now has its new suspension so no more boaty antics! Whilst it won't be comparing apples with apples, it will still be interesting to compare times between S2 and 951... (I'm still on road tyres so you'll murder me!)

Can anyone link me up with this thing on the 23rd?

Edit - is it the Motorpunk day? If so I'll come to that too I think.

I'll see if I can get booked in for the 23rd. Got a few jobs to do on the boxster and 944 before then but should be no problem

Rich - I might have better tyres, which will give me a second or two, but it only goes some way to addressing the age and talent deficit... [:D].

Have done Prescott, not good for my dogleg box crunching into first for the hairpin. Generally a low gear course but does take some balls in the tight bits to let the car run rather than brake too much. Too much opportunity to hit something if it gets squirrelly

Have also done sprints on Castle Combe. Super fast on cold tyres, especially Avon Rise/Quarry takes some commitment. Unfortunately, my 924 turbo gets bumped into the 2.5l+ class and I end up trying to keep up with modified 400bhp Subarus and Mitsubishi Evos. Still it's all good fun. Gets the heart and adrenalin pumping regardless of being competitive. Now off to see if I can enter some more this year.

We should look at hiring Blyton for a cheeky day. Open pit in the morning, sprint in the afternoon.

I'd be keen to make the trip east for this.

The Curborough day is the Motorpunk one, it's run by www.sprintandtrackday.co.uk it's run by a group of mates and they keep the numbers sensible so you get loads of runs for £60 a day with a nice hint of competition. Drop them a line on sprintandtrackday@hotmail.co.uk

Ed I hope you're not suggesting I have any of this 'talent' you speak of... Haha. It would be good to get a few 944's along! There's a decent group of us going on the 23rd with a good mix of cars [;)]

Good stuff, Rich normally pops along in the 968 for the morning of these to take a few photos and to keep an eye on their championship...

Some of the PCGB Hillclimb Championship guys should be there (not me -I'm off to Spa the following day....) so there should be plenty of advice around.

They do a school day at Harewood -worth the effort!!
