Anyone know this S2?

No 944 S2 badge on the back, No sunroof, 16Ventiler badges on the wings. Maybe these are Jap market specific tweaks but the first thing I would be checking is if it is really an S2!

Hi all

I've seen an S2 for sale on Ebay - it looks a nice car from the photos. (None of the engine or dash though). I've enquired about belt change and sill condition. Does anyone know this car, or see anything that looks amiss with it / the advert? And can anyone think of anything else worth enquiring about / checking?

No bidding against me on it!!

Finally, would anyone care to have a guess at fair value for it? Bearing in mind the cat c, need of belts and rollers, unknown mileage etc.

Thank you.

Good point - hadn't noticed the Ventiler badges. Another reason to want to see a pic of the engine, which I've asked for. Thank you. It does have the bridge spoiler, rear diffuser and aircon, all of which I associate with S2s / turbos, though they could be aftermarket.

Actually, according to the DVLA website, it still requires a VIC. But he's taxed it a couple of times since the fix - surely he couldn't do that without a VIC?

Seems like the owner is abroad a fair bit. I do have an increasing number of questions about it to be answered though...

I wouldn't touch V cars (damaged repaired). Best spend that little extra for a proper car, at least it'll have a definite value.

That age and bodywork and it can only be an S2 or turbo. Nice colour, and so long as the repair was well-documented it's not such a big issue. Why would someone who works on the car himself not fix the speedo, though? Might be the cynic in me, but it doesn't make a lot of sense as a car with iffy mileage is immediately suspicious. [&o]

Someone's just bid it up to 5k! Im not looking to spend anything like that sort of money on it. Ah well. Might well be a dodgy bidder, so we'll see what happens...

uncertain mileage too.. no, I would steer clear of that car. I cant understand why its now above 5k, I think its worth much less with a story like that. There is a couple of similar mileage cars on pistonheads maybe worth a look.. a red one with 70k and a white one with 71k (white one looks too dear in my opinion). I actually got my S2 from the seller of the red car and can recommend them. EDIT: I see the bid has now been cancelled (bid was 12k..lol)

Option code M193 is version for Japan and option code M598 is Insignia 16 Ventiler which I presume is the wing badges. So get the seller to send you a photo of the option codes sticker and see if it has either of those listed.

Just found this on a US forum.....spec sounds similar to the advertised car. Just commenting on missing option stickers. My 1991 S2 RoW is missing the sticker - just the glue residue where the sticker was. Porsche NA "birth certificate" showed only information I provided while confirming the serial number. My car was originally in Japan (Mizwa was sole importer in those days) and then brought to Canada. VIN decoder shows only side moldings as options although the car has air, power windows, vertical headlight adjustments (M605), headlights for right hand traffic (M492), 4 speaker stereo (had Sony head unit so can't tell if was M441 prepared for radio or if it had a Blaupunkt), rear seats not divided (M684), power seats, etc. Also - sun roof DELETE and what appears to be a car phone antenna on the roof although there is no evidence of a car phone having been installed. I contacted Mizwa but they lost exclusive distributorship so could provide no information other than confirming the car was imported and sold by them. It seems that there must be standard equipment associated with options like M193 - Prepared for Japan. If anyone knows how to find out what those options consisted of I would really like to know.

Thanks chaps. Yes, high bid withdrawn. Looks like the reserve is set pretty high though. Still not heard anything from the seller. Will look on pistonheads too in the meantime...

As has been said, there are more questions than answers. Going to see it would be an essential step; seeing the car and meeting the owner could make it a definite go-er or a non-starter. I wouldn't rule it out if it comes at the right price, but I would certainly not buy without seeing (and test-driving) it. Giles, I know I owe you an answer to your eMail as well ... I haven't forgotten! [:)] Oli.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, gents. Heard back from the seller - monkey, it seems you were right, the 16Ventiler badge was apparently an option on some European S2s. The engine bay does seem to look like an S2 (airbox doesn't say Ventiler anyway!). Apparently the car has no rust, but the belts haven't been done since at least 2008 - not sure about before that as the seller can't read the Japanese paperwork! I fear that the reserve is 5k, which is more than Im willing to spend on it, unless it's absolutley superb. Mike, I think that would be a reasonable price to pay depending on inspection... The condition of the seats does seem to suggest that the mileage may be genuine ish. Off to a wedding shortly, but will try and arrange a viewing when I'm back. Oli, don't worry - when you have a moment is fine! I might sell the Lux and get this S2 anyway... [:D][:D] Mind you, it will also need a belt change!

You can see an airbox? You shouldn't be able to see an airbox on an S2. It is located under the badge panel...
