anyone out there, fitted a slightly larger non like for like turbo on a 944 turbo

Hi guys,
i’m going to be into a fairly laborious task this summer of putting my top end of my engine back together after more machine work, but i have also decided to do a drastic measure of changing the turbo for a larger one to handle more boost and also creating a twin scroll exhuast system up to the new twin scroll turbo flange which should aid in a slightly quicker spool (which will help as this is a larger turbo)

ive desided to go with a Holset hx35 which is a dam sight bigger than the kkk26 i rebuilt few years back when i did a full engine build and forged the lot , so when i got it live mapped after all the performance parts , it had to stop at 300 bhp as the little kkk turbo just wasn’t able to flow what the engine wanted so we dialled it back to 300 bhp - ....abd so here we are with a larger turbo able to handle 30psi with ease apparently as these are diesel turbos so are increasingly bullet proof, and i would like to use around 22-26 psi possibly we’ll see how it goes ?

my question is,...has anyone on here ever had to fit or had fitted a turbo like mine that wasn’t like for like fitment ? this is going to be a massive challenge to bracket up the turbo and make some custom piped angles ect as it just dwarfs the kkk but i want and will make it work one way or the other, i already have planes in my head that require some alley welding to the engine mount ,..bit full on modding but there ain’t any other place for it to go so needs must and i want to run this turbo as i’ve not heard of anyone doing so and i’m sure that’s becuase of the LR variants out there that are easily like for like ,..but it’s just such a pain to buy from america now so this is what i’ve decoded i’m going to break the mold with.

its not not going to be easy at all as i am going to build a full 3” system also but that is a goid thing as i beed it to breath out better anyway as it’s still 2.5”

if anyones done similar or knows of such please let me know any info i’d appreciate it.

sounds fun!

Didn’t Tim do this on the 600bhp one references a few threads below?

As you’ve worked out - Space is going to be a problem. If I go down this kind of route in the future then I’ll be looking at a Turbo that’s been done before, like several of the GTX types, then I can learn from the trial and error of others (hopefully).

I would just fit a modern ball bearing turbo rather than mucking around with a twin scroll. Jon Mitchell could probably tell you where to buy one.

i on purposely went with the twin scroll blade , becuase i did allot of research on the differences and a good source that fits twin scrolls to all kinds of cars says the spool is far superior despite what some say on the internet. his a bit of a turbo guru and must have about 30 + garret and all borge warner and prefers the holsets in twin scroll for i prooved spool and bulletproof ness , ...so i thought sod it! i’m going for the hx35 and already have the rebuikd kit, not that it has play but i like to know what’s going on inside and all.

if i wasn’t able to do the lot myself and had to pay someone then no i wouldn’t be bothering doing this the hard way. but as i will be doing it and persevering , i thought sod it.

i quite liked the idea of trying a turbo no one else goes for , espeacially being these are for diesels so are meant to be super reliable for big boost so as long as i can make it work in the tiny space ive got , and the spool is half decent , i should be able to make the nice comfortable power ( fingers crossed)

cheers David,

i havnt been on here for a while so havnt seen this thread? will try to find it?

i know some i america are big on using the hot side of the hx35 and getting them machined to fit the rest of the kkk26/7 it never heard of anyone using the whole thing like i’m gonna try,..i think becuase it’s bloody big compared to the kkk infact it looks miniature

pic here of them both

I could fabricate it all too, just can't be arsed now. Will the inlet manifold fit with that huge turbo?

honest truth is, i can’t bloody arsed iether! i’ve still got to build the top end back up i’ve just finished putting the head back together.

this is the BIG question and dictates allot in terms of positioning and mods, ...i need to get the head on to mock up the inlet manifold to see what room i’ve got and also quick fit of the throttle body for the inlet pipe clearance ect.....it’s a bloody faff alright,.but gonna give it a go.

once i know what room i’ve got above i will decide if i am gonna fabricate a oil extension bracket to make use of the oil drain that goes through the right engine mount, or if i am gonna have to rig the drain from scratch including the one from the oil/air canister Pain in the backside if i can’t but i have a couple of plans if not. One things for sure it’s bloody tight in there and i’m more worried if i will get the exhuast bends into the hot side flange and the induction air onto the inlet of the turbo being its minimal room , but we shall see .

this was the reason to see if anyone else had tried this to see what they found first , but i don’t recall reading or knowing anyone else doing it , unless this Tim has that David was meansioning about ? not looked it up yet.

Keith (not sure if he’s on here) bought a Voodoo Turbo from Emanuel Galossen on the Premier Turbo FB page - with all the ancillaries it cost him £2k landed with all shipping and duties paid.

Straight bolt on and he did 403bhp.

If you dig a bit deeper, EG buys those turbos in from somewhere else. Him and his cronies have a hissy fit if you contradict them about anything too. Most likely why he was thrown off Rennlist. I don't know if his Mrs ran off with one of the Lindsey Racing boys, as there's no love lost there either :ROFLMAO:.

He’s "still” building up his engine - been at it for about 2 years now too [:D]

Can’t deny that for a bolt-on (albeit rather expensive) proposition - his turbos do seem to perform well.

Didn't think he even owned a 944? I don't remember the name of the guy/company that builds the modified turbos, but he seemed to get good reviews on RL.

Yes, those names ring a bell. I think at least one of them machines/fits bigger housings and billet wheels.

I checked some pics of Tims engine, looks there's only one crossover pipe. Don't twin scroll turbos have 2? There's a thread on Tipec from 2014 where a guy in Ireland fitted a twin scroll, R/E 951 was his username I think.

it should have two ports going to the turbo yes,... but it could be a single pipe with a divider inside coming off the manifold collector , i’d have to try find it unless it’s easy for opi to put a pic up? i havnt managed to find his stuff yet.

worked on the car a bit last night when kids went to bed , but need to get the head and the cam tower on before i get carried away thinking i may have a solution to the turbo position ect, as before i mic on the inlet manifold and TB i ain’t really got a leg to stand on for the clearence.

i read allot of yanks who have fitted a different turbo on our cars that they are changing our alternators for one from a nissan which is better for charging them ours but much smaller , and some are also deleting a/c to moove the alternator lower. there also having to change the nut and bracket that holds the return spring on the throttle body to get the clearance . but there not really specifying how big there turbos are with a photo or clear discription.

there also still keeping the original oil bracket point on the right engine mount , so there turbos can’t be that big i’m thinking?? i’m not sure i’ll get to use mine , which is one thing i was thinking i’d need to cut and customise to fit the holset.

I don’t want to delete my a/c but would change the alternator if i had to which i might?

this is gonna be a royal pain in the a@@e but.....if i can pull it off i know i’ll have a bit of a speacial feeling 944 turbo, and i’m really not interested in having the same as everyone else anyway, ...i just like to be different. and the way i look at our cars , ... the modded ones anyway,...they must all drive totally different as we have all tunned then slightly differently and that’s what i like about then,....they are what we do to them, and i want mine to be the way i want it ....Ling way to go though as i still run a standard AFM so when funds allow will have a maff and standalone ecu of some sort , and prob have to uprate my 55lb injectors for the next size up ?? all going well with this turbo set up .... got further future custom plans but will leave that for when that time comes .... no where near that financially at this moment in time!

Search for 'turbotim3' on Tipec, there's a 11 page thread about his S2 3.0 16v turbo build. He modified the turbo mount/drain for his big turbo I think. I have to admire your ambition, there's much easier ways to 400bhp now though.

cheers mate , will look into that tonight!...

think the twin scroll thing got me hooked on wanting to do something different ,..then the holset diesel turbo hx 35 . everyone seems to go the garrett route, so i thought as i didn’t have the money spare to buy one , i’d give this one a good go as there supposed to be bullet proof for big boost applications and are used for all kinds of machinery other than cars , so i’m taking the odd one out route, as up to now have pretty much followed what other people’s mods were, but the more i’ve been researching modifying turbo cars over the last 3 years , i’ve learnt it’s all a personal taste thing, and as long as things are scientifically mixing together right , im hoping this turbo will pull strong all way to my extended redline from hopefully around the 3500 rpm, only one way i’ll find out with all my setup ,.. i don’t mind the lag then the strong pull as it’s the 80s thing isn’t it , siera cosies ive heard are very similar lag wise then a big kick, which i love anyway so anything spoolwise under 3500rpm i’ll be chuffed , but ultimately it will deliver the power i want in future so i had to do something about the little kkk,..and i’ve deffinately done it the pain in the A@@e /stupid way maybe????? but if it works excellent , people will say the opersite i suppose and i will be well chuffed i tried [:)]
we’ll see how it goes ey![;)]

slowely slowely ...

I had a 87 Cosworth for 13 years. Being 16v and having the turbo mounted close to the head seemed to make the boost arrive more suddenly. The Cosworth head/turbo setup is just better IMO, and on the same boost I don't think the 8v head will ever hit as hard.

i didn’t realise they did 16v heads,.... yea deffinately would have breathed that much more air in being double the valves.

why did you get rid of it , or was it stolen or damaged ? or just like me regret getting rid of allot of nice cars over the years chasing something else
