Apple Car Play

Having just purchased a 2013 981 Boxster I’m thinking of installing an Apple Car Play kit. Would be appreciated if anyone can recommend a good quality competitively priced unit / or installer close to the SW region . Thank you.

Hi Stephen, I’ve just purchased an Apple CarPlay kit from Autoabc.shop for £155. Not fitted it yet but we have a member in R2 that has one in his 911 and it seems fine.

Not the cheapest, but if you have Bose then the Mr12Volt system is I believe, the only one that uses the optical connections thus superior audio quality, as opposed to “Aux“.
Downside is it has an external box but there is plenty of space underneath the lower dash panel (driver’s side).
Take your time and it’s easily DIY-able. Lots of good Y/T vids.

I spent ages reading up on this. If you want to retain the original look of the PCM unit, then either Mr 12v or the NM Automotive kits are the way to go. Cost is circa £400 plus installation (if you don't fancy doing it yourself). Both kits involve removing the PCM, opening it up and adding and additional PCB. The main difference between the Mr12v and NM kits is that Mr12 also has an additional box of tricks that needs to be squirrelled away under the dash somewhere.

I ended up purchasing the Erisin unit, which I've just installed myself this afternoon. It is, pretty much as they claim, plug and play. However, instructions are non-existent and I've found that it will probably work better with a couple of extra cables that I've ordered from Amazon to connectteh existing aerial and GPS receiver. I'll find out tomorrow!

The Erisin unit comes in at around £200. However that wasn't the main reason for me buying it. I couldn't quite get around the logic of adding clever, expensive kit to technology that's over 10 years old (with the added risk of something going wrong with the PCM when you add the extra board).

Here’s an update on my installation of the Autoabc wireless CarPlay unit in my 987.2 PCM 3.0.

As you might expect with the cheapest system on the market (I paid only £152) the instructions were pathetic and almost non existent, however a fellow R2 member had previously installed one in his 997 911 and was able to guide me and direct me to an essential and very helpful YouTube video.

Despite that I wasn’t sure I had the right unit because the supplied main loom didn’t have any fibre optic connections. It turned out I had to remove them from the original main socket and attach them to the new loom, a relatively easy job.

with trepidation I installed the new PC board and ribbon cables then attempted to install the supplied replacement cd-rom caddy. Unfortunately this didn’t match up with my unit which appeared to have been replaced in 2018 perhaps under warranty before I owned the car. I therefore decided to modify my original metalwork with a Dremmel to form an outlet for the new cables. This actually turned out to be better.

once the unit was reassembled i connected it and turned it on and….. a white unresponsive screen. Great I thought, have I broken or not connected something, but the radio was playing through the speakers so I knew the fibre optics were working at least. I switched it off and left it for about half an hour and when I went back and turned it on the screen worked! The unit is quite slow and it may just have been booting up.

In summary it all works, albeit slightly laggy and the sound through the aux isn’t as clean as the original unit which still uses the optical system, and when I selected satellite image on Google maps it froze but was working again the next day.

I suspect the dearer systems are better but for all I need it’s ok, not perfect or sharp like a modern system so my advice would be to go with a more expensive version.

hope that’s helpful.
