I have been looking for a well maintained red 944 for some months now and viewed at least a dozen cars..
Some of the vehicles I have inspected are priced at the very top end of what I would consider to be the price band for such cars. At this level you would expect the car to have a full service history, bodywork and paint in good condition (Sills replaced and if its red a quality repaint) Can belts etc replaced...Sadly that does not seem to be the case, and the issue now seems to a lack of really good cars available at even these supposed inflated prices (£13t to £15t) Of fundamental concern is the underside of the vehicle and any associated rust which requires remedial action with the need to "let new metal" into the rusted areas to make the vehicle sound, key areas seem to be the back of the front wheel arch and the front of the rear wheel arch etc. Brake pipes are often badly rusted, fuel lines weep and suspension components need attention.
NB...Obviously red is a colour which is particularly problematic, given that the paint is prone to fade (Unlike modern paint finishes that use a lacquer coat)
The issue seems to be that people want top money for vehicles that still need thousands of pounds worth of work on them and should you buy such a car it would make no sense . I have no problem paying top money for a car which is in really good condition and a sound provenance...
Should anyone on the forum have a car which they are considering selling in red, either a lux, S, or an S2 which meets this criteria I would be happy to view the vehicle. I have recently traveled as far afield as Glasgow (Modern Classic Car Co) viewed cars at several dealers in the South East, and several private sellers, but not found anything which meets my criteria ...One club member recently told me that I amy be looking for something that does not exist, but I still hope to find the right car in time...
My Alpine white S2 has had all of the work done which you mention and is available for £10k. How important is it to have a red one?paulduprey said:Interesting comments from some members of the forum.
