Are winter tyres any good?

I had dunlop winter 4d's on my 944 last winter and they were awesome in the snow ,lots of traction. When the snow hit London i was one of the few out in the snow the first day and the car was flying down the road with no problems what so ever . I saw dozens of cars stuck in the snow , the m25 was practically deserted , i had absolutely no problems in the 944 and it's al thanks to winter tyres . Where most cars were creeping along i could go at higher speeds without any loss of traction.
I always heard stories that the 944 with the right tyres is awesome on snow but now i can confirm it as well .
Almost makes me sad that this winter i wont be needing it and it will be sitting it out.

What tyres did you choose?
I have been running some "Nankang Studdable" on my Clio

We went for LingLong Winter Heroes :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

We very rarely have any appreciable snow here so are just looking for better traction around freezing compared with our summer Dunlops and the first night we used them was -1 and they felt much better than the Dunlops did the day before.

living in the frozen north is no fun unless you have winter tyres, my car is my only means of getting to work (I could walk i suppose its only 4 miles) and without winter tyres I cant get the car out the drive. So no choice for me but to use them. Always easier if you have 2 sets wheels

happy safe winter motoring to all

well this is all looking quite on sided. thanks for all your replies and I really like the Auto Express You tube clip - its in my nature to demand the scientific data behind this type of claim. My main dealer does a good swap over scheme where you get nice bags for the tyres and the return to the summer tyres is free. The financial stumbling block is the £800 for the tyres (actually an impressive competitive price given the size of the tyres) but as soon as I have my first emergency /sudden brake on the M1 at about 70 I'm sure I'll think it was money well spent

Fitted ours this morning. Checked, and Subaru say the max speed on them is 130mph.

Ours were £120 for a set of alloys off the Legacy forum, and £80 per tyre. Nice standard size though, which does keep the cost down!

Expect temperatures to soar now. [&o]

I use winter tires about ½ of the year, driving conditions just demand use of them. Also according to our laws we must use them during winter time. So far i have driven 34 winters without difficulties. I use only finnish made Nokian tires.

Currently 9.5 degrees outside my office, isn't that a little warm for winter tyres? Thought they were best below 7 degrees. If I lived in Finland it would be an easy choice :)

No, not at all. Don't conflate "summer tyres become ineffective below 7 degC" with "winter tyres are no good above 7 degC". My winters go on mid-November and stay on until the end of March. In the South of the UK (Hampshire). They work perfectly well throughout that period and I am starting my fourth winter on them with 7mm of tyre depth at the time of fitting.

fair enough, maybe I should start looking for a set of wheels then, my summers have done 150k they could use a light refurb anyway.
