At last I belong...

After God knows how many years of looking at various Porsche models I can finally post on the forum as an owner. I have bought a well known car in these parts - an '87 944 Turbo from Mas.

Thanks Mas for an almost enjoyable buying experience ;)

I look forward to posting lots of stupid questions on here over the next few weeks and months, but for now just a poor quality shot of my new toy.

Edited to add: reading my comment about the buying experience makes it sound like it wasn't good. Quite the opposite - Mas was a pleasure to buy from. It is just that I hate buying cars!

Jeez, someone bought it? [:D]

Only joking, Mas' car looked stunning at the Rutland meeting and I'm sure you've bought one of the bargains of the year. Welcome to 944 ownership!

hiya james, a warm welcome and you have bought a great car, after meeting mas and reading his posts about your car i believe you have bought one of the "good ones"[imho],and i hope you enjoy her, where are you based? i think another 944 get together must happen, regards jason p

Welcome James [:)]

Look forward to meeting you at a get together and feel free to post as many questions as you like. Not sure I ever saw the car when Mas owned it but by all accounts you got a good one at a very reasonable price.

I always thought Mas's turbo was silver because of the pic on his profile! Didn't realise it was a black one. Superb work, that's my favourite colour. Let us know how it feels as you first get used to driving with boost? I don't know what you've driven previously but when I first felt it I found the way the big 4pot turbo accelerates extremely entertaining. It's fantastic for overtaking just remember the 3 week rule! Almost every 944 T I've seen or heard of being crashed over the years has happened in the first three weeks. Don't let it catch you out at the start because once you've built up a bit of knowledge about how it reacts in different situations it'll never do anything different. You just need to be expecting it to catch it sometimes.

Hey, welcome. I never saw Mas's car, but met Mas and got the distinct impression that he would look after cars well. I expect it's a good'un.

Enjoy it. Just bear in mind that it's only a matter of time before you feel a hankering after the superiority of an S2 ... [;)]

Classic turbo denial. A sad case. Maybe just maybe if you ask nicely one of the boosty boys will take you out and give you some therapy at the next meet you attend.

Really? Will the therapy take place before or after the turbo lag? Or possibly during .... ? [;)]

I suspect that I'll probably make most of the journey from home to the next meet (not that I have one planned - alas!) while the turbo boys are waiting for their turbos to spin up ... [:)]

S2. Power on (instant) demand. You know it makes sense. *

Thanks chaps.

Re the way it drives, I had a Nissan 200SX some years ago and it reminds me a bit of that. The 944 Turbo probably isn't as laggy as my bog standard 200SX was though.

I am definitely taking it easy to start with. I like the 3-week rule. That makes a lot of sense. I have only driven it home from Mas' (about 45 mins) so haven't got many miles under my belt yet. I can see it is going to be fun though!

I have my first owner's question which I shall post in its own thread....

LOL. 200 bhp, rear wheel drive, 4 cylinder, turbo, no traction control, insufficient mechanical grip

Apart from the last one (I hope), there are some similarities! ;)

Hi
James I saw it at Rutland it was a very good looking car.
Enjoy it and I look forward to meeting you and it again!
Cheers
Mike

Mas's car is a good'n (from what I've seen of it) and at that price you cant go wrong. Look forward to seeing you at the next 944 meet!

Much more time to have the therapy whilst you are waiting for the S2 to get powerful - infinite Turbo lag is very depressing :ROFLMAO:

Enjoy the banter James, we have plenty of it and rarely get serious

I went out in a nice turbo again last night (Thanks to Rob, superb car) and as we cruised all the way round the roundabout to return to the piece of dual carriageway we had just driven, power building with great anticipation as the car turned the final few degrees to reveal our exit I actually grinned uncontrollably as we were launched (appropriate wording) out with a whoooosh pop and into third. How many times have you grinned uncontrollably at the acceleration of your S2?

The 944 turbo - Good things come to those who wait[;)]

p.s. James about the 200sx having spent a lot of time in and driving an S14 I think the 200sx is the perfect car to explain how the 944 T is worth more than the sum of its parts. The 200sx had comfy leather seats, aircon, a nice big GT size fuel tank, RWD, an LSD, a good seating position and a 4 pot turbo. In isolation it was a lovely car to own and drive.. but get out of it into a 944 turbo and it's like the difference between watching a film at home and going to the cinema.

The 200sx has a dead exhaust note, no tune, no passion just a dry 4 pot sound even with my friends full SS exhaust and induction kit. It has numb feedback through the wheel, a plastic steering wheel, soft non sporty suspension, lazy chassis flex as you enter the bends, a 'hot wheels' plastic dash/centre console and appalling brakes!

When my bum hit the seat of my 944 again and the door slammed home with a lovely solid clu-chunk I felt I had entered back into the world of real sports cars. The engine note rasps with a unique Porsche sound, the turbo pulls with an extra level of aggression, the gearchange is suddenly a lovely smooth and satisfyingly weighted throw from one gear to the next, the cotton wool has been removed from the mouth of the steering wheel and communicates like a two way conversation to my every input. The brakes are perfectly weighted, solid and confidence inspiring. The ride is still soft and comfortable but the chassis is as solid as a racer. 5 minutes later I may be in grave danger of losing my licence but I'm enjoying every second of the drive in ways (and at a pace) the 200sx could only dream of.

If your 944 T does not fit this description 'exactly' then you have some worn parts that need replacing.
