Away trip

Purely hypothetical at this stage but could I have a show of hands for an away trip? Either one night or two. I was thinking of Dartmoor because I grew up there and know the roads very well. I see from PP that the Surrey region did something similar recently.

I'm thinking second half of the summer or early autumn.

Cheers

Sorry John, must have been some crossed wires. I did talk to my contact there who said to just phone up and arrange through normal channels. When I mentioned that to you at Ascot I thought you were then going to give them a ring. I shall call Brooklands this week and let you know. Do you want it as well as or instead of an Ascot meet? i.e on the first Sunday or not?

Wrt to the away trip, we now have five cars including me. Arguably not enough. I thought maybe we could publicise it at Reading and have a cut off a couple of weeks after that. If say ten people are interested I'll put something together. My concern with only five is that when we actually come to talk dates, it only needs two to not be able to make it and it becomes rather less of a convoy.

Actually I thought tolchy was going to make contact for us. Gorrrr. I dunno if you want a job doing.....

OK

Can I suggest we have a mini meeting at Reading and that people bring diaries so we can talk dates.

The other two big questions are:

One night or two?

I suggest two so that we can drive down on the Fri and have all day Sat exploring the moor. I'm more than happy to be overruled though.

Do we stay in the lovely but expensive and isolated hotels on the moor or look for something more Travel Inn esque in say Plymouth which will be cheaper and with a bit more nightlife? I grew up on the edge of the moor and with the Plymouth nightlife so I can safely say that there are pros and cons to both.

What about farmhouse type B&B's with good pub grub down the road? Might be able to find a couple in close proximity that'll take us. The AA guide online is quite good for this sort of thing and we've had some excellent stays using it.

I'd echo the concern around city centre parking. Saturday night in Plymouth town centre.... ?

Is this a lads weekend or are we bringing wives too?

Gents (I think it's all gents so far)

Craig - I'm looking into some of the larger pubs up on the moor, but it does depend how many we end up with. The problem with farmhouse B&Bs on Dartmoor (as I have discovered myself in the 968) is the farm tracks necessary to meet them.

I think we are up to eight now which is certainly enough. It looks like all eight of us will be at Reading so we can talk then. Any more than eight will probably mean splitting between two hotels / b&bs unless we stay at the big expensive places (which are likely to be full of weddings anyway).

I'm afraid there are two people how've signed up whom I don't immediately recognise from their logins. Apologogies if I know you from Ascot but I can't put a face to the login as it were. These are hooghes and kenwoods - can you give me a bit more to go on chaps?

I don't mind if it's lads only or lads and wives. My wife certainly thinks she's coming at the moment...

Again, we can discuss this at Reading - please bring your diaries.

Craig - I think you are the only one who hasn't said they'll be at Reading. Will you be there?

So, following our mini meeting at Reading I hope we have established the following:

The trip will be two nights (Fri and Sat) on either 19 - 21 Sept or 26 - 28 Sept.

I will aim for accomodation in the region of £75 per room per night.

The weekend will include better halves.

The ten of us who are up for it at this point are Me, Craig, James, Jason, Simon, Adrian, Peter, Ken, Tony and John (our noble leader). That makes ten cars and I'm going to cap it at that otherwise accomodation is going to be a problem.

Could each of you PLEASE post on this thread or preferably PM me to confirm that you can definitely make it and whether both dates are OK or if you have a preference.

I need to get moving on this if we're going to get somewhere to stay all together.

Cheers

James

Hi James,

Yes both dates are fine with me.

I was down there last weekend playing on the moors, chasing my mates new car. [:D]

Ken

Right.

I have booked ten hotel rooms for Friday 19th September and Saturday 20th September.

Simon and Craig - these ten rooms include you so if you can't make it please let me know asap.

Can anyone contact Craig and Simon outside of the forum? I've tried PMs but no response as yet.

Friday 19th is at http://www.thewhitehart-hotel.com/ and Saturday 20th is at http://www.theforestinn.co.uk/. Both estblishments are on budget with the White Hart at £75 per room and the Forest Inn at £65 / £75 depending on whether you have en-suite or not. There are three non en-suite rooms but all have their own private bathrooms. Just not erm... en suite. Oh, and two of the rooms at the Forest Inn are twin rather than double.

More info nearer the time.

Cheers

James

PS If anyone knows of anywhere on or around Dartmoor that they would particularly like to visit just let me know.
