Baby seat issue resolved for the 997

After many hours of research, going backwards and forwards to different stores and trying many seats, I have finally bought and installed a baby seat I can throw my nephew into.

I've been looking into this for a while now but had to resolve the issue this week as, and I'm not sure how this happened, my nephew decided that he prefers my car over those of his parents and grandparents - he's going to be 2 at the end of the month.

Expense aside, the general consensus seems to be that most children don't care for the Porsche seat because it's quite restrictive.

Therefore, without further ado, I present to you the:

Mamas & Papas Pro-Tec
Black Chequers
Group 1 Forward Facing Car Seat
Suitable from: 9kg - 18kg (9 months - 4 years approx)
£120

I checked this seat out yesterday and fitted it to both the rear and front seat (passenger side obviously although I'm sure my nephew would be happy to have the steering wheel on his side!).

It fit perfectly on the sports seats in the front but I won't be using it there till I've had the airbag deactivation kit installed. I believe it's supposed to work in conjunction with a toggle on a Porsche child seat but I'll figure it out. The store also suggested that I buy a seat cover from Halfords to protect the leather when using the seat in the front.

The fit in the rear was snug but a good one, much to the surprise of the manager who never for one second thought it would fit. To the contrary in fact, he was very happy with the fit. I decided to have my Porsche bodyshop remove the rear seat backrest and base so that, when installed, the child seat sits further back to give my nephew more legroom and avoid sitting too close to the seat in front. It also sits lower down thereby reducing a marginal blindspot created by a slightly higher seat. Moreover, the leather on the rear seat is safeguarded as the seat sits on the carpet. Once again, I made sure that both the manager and the installer at Mamas & Papas were happy with the fit of the seat directly on the carpet.

I took my nephew out for a spin this evening to dish out his birthday party invitations and he was over the moon. He was looking particularly dapper in the back seat with his leather jacket and Winnie the Pooh shades. When asked, he was happy to give both the car and the seat his full and unconditional seal of approval.

I will post pictures of the installed seat asap for anyone who's interested.

Please do post the picture up, there was only a discussion on this the other day..

My boy is almost six and therefore has a booster. I remove the rear seat base - it's just held on with velcro. The carpeted base seems a much better fit against the booster seat.

I gather from the other thread that it's easier to find a booster seat that fits a 997 than a baby seat, thankfully!

Here are the pictures.

Sunil,

On your recommendation alone we have ordered one of these and Mrs Yves is having to wait in all day tomorrow ( that's M&S's profits down for the day ! ) to take delivery of it ( £104 from Glasgo Pram Centre by the way ).

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Don't forget to lower the seat and push it as far forward as possible before putting the seat in the car. After that you can adjust the seat as required. I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Best wishes,
Sunil
PS Excellent price!

Will do.

It will be quite novel to get both offspring in the car, our daughter who is 5 has got the official Porsche seat and the little Guy who is nearly 9 months old will have the Pro-tec.

When it comes to spending money on things for the car which are 'family' orientated, negotiations are short and budgets generous !

Hi,
Do you know of any that fit in the back that can be used for a new born baby, maybe with some extra inseart / attachment even ?
Thanks.

Eventually got round to fitting the new Protec baby seat in the back of the motor.

Its a very snug fit but very, very secure, feels as tightly belted in as a proper isofix mount in fact.

Off to a childrens party tomorrow with both offspring and Mrs Y so we can test the set up out.

The Good Mrs Y has generously offerred to drive us all home and even more generously instructed me to 'drink pleanty of wine' with the other dads while we are there so that I dont fuss about her pin point inaccurate driving on the way home !!

Get very drunk[:D]

I shall be suitably fuzzy around the edges to be sure [8D]

Miggins hasn't driven the beast since the X51 job and she has a very heavy right foot at the best of times ! [:(]

In reply to the above we use the maxi cosi cabrio car seat for our baby girl - she's now 7 months old and enjoys going out in our car (well seems to anyway!!) It fits in the back behind the passenger seat - the only downside is that the passenger seat has to be quite far forward although there is still enough room for someone to sit (just!). I didn't know that you could take out the seat base and back so we're going to try and see if it will fit in any better without them :)

Welcome mgrealey [:D]
Excellent first post.. and glad you too may have learnt something in the process.

How was it? Did you remove the back and the base? My nephew just can't get enough - you should see him in the back with his shades on. I bought him a steering wheel which is stuck with a sucker to the back of the front seat. It can get a little confusing when his indicators are going at the same time as mine but it's very cool - damn I wish I was 2!

Can you do the same seat base and back removal thingy in an a Cab. aswell?

I'm trying my hardest to persuade Denise that a 911 Cab is a good idea, then all of us can go out in the Porsche rather than a limited number, 2 to be precise, due to lack of seats in the Boxster. Or taking the customary 2 cars to an event.

I think she's starting to come round to the idea, as after I pointed out the black/beige 997 cab last week she did go coooo!

She also suggested that at the next meet/event, she'd have a look at someones 911 and see if it was acceptable.

(Other ideas and persuation tactics gratefully received.)
