Back to air cooled

After a year in a 996, and before that some time without a Porsche, I am just a little excited to be collecting a 993 at the weekend, being a 95 C2 Manual. Was amazed at how well the car drove on test - not a rattle or squeak, or anything to suggest it was more than a year old apart from a slightly discoloured gear knob. They don't make 'em like they used to! (996 has had a succession of interior rattles which have driven me up the wall.)

Have also resurrected my membership after a few years off.

Will post spome pics if the weather is favourable for taking any at the weekend (so don't hold your breath)...

Martin

Glad to see its not just me then martin.....[;)]

I've just done the same however I sold a 996 turbo to go aircooled, the 993 just gives me my motoring mojo back though...loving it[:D]

That's interesting Zeb as the 996 TT was on the list of 'possibles' (and would have been my other half's choice over a 993) - how was it?

Hi Martin,

I just collected a Polar Silver 1995 C2 Coupe last week too!

I've been away from Porsche ownership for a few years having owned a 993 previously and I couldn't stay away.

It's really tough not to take her out everyday now that the sun is out.....

I've posted some pictures of mine under my "Hello from a new 993 owner - photos added!" thread.

Looking forward to seeing the photos of yours.

Sam

Hi Martin,

Many thanks for the compliment, did you get to enjoy yours at the weekend?

The box in the drivers door bin is the Nokia(!?) digital sound processor (plus Nokia amp under drivers seat) that came with the hi-fi speaker option when new from the factory.

It's got some novelty/originality value but I'm not sure it adds much to the 'hi-fi' status of the system!

Sam

Not collecting until this weekend Sam. Interesting hi-fi option! At least the extra weight's low down to help with the centre of gravity. [;)]

I'm trying to figure out if i can come back soon too - have had four in the past, would love to be shopping for my fifth soon :)

Welcome back!!

Any company reading these posts about one of their products must be so proud and pleased that they have created such a masterpiece.... and kicking themselves for replacing it[:D][:D][:D]

The turbo was a very accomplished piece of kit martin. It was stunningly quick and held the road like a train on tracks. It had everthing I could throw at it including a track day at oulton and my annual 1200 mile jaunt to le mans.

The problem was I never really 'connected' with it, if anything it was too safe, too sanitised with a feeling of invincibility attached to it , which, for me, wasnt a good thing. It felt like a very nice modern car that went like the clappers...but nothing more than that.

When I first sat in the 993 that I have now it just felt right, sounded right and drove right

There a saying " If I had to tell you then you wouldn't understand"
well i'm sure everyone on this particular part of the forum understands [:D][;)]

Funnily enough that's exactly how i felt when i test drove a 996tt as a replacement for my 993tt. Ended up buying another 993 C2!

Just to add to this thread i today put a deposit on the red carrera 4 at paul stephens after negotiating a few amendments to the car and price. she drives beautifully and im in love with an air cooled again!! Hopefully the sale of my 997 all goes smoothly next monday and ill be swapping the 997 for the 993. cant wait.

Apart from any performance differences, you can at least drive these if the cooling goes (fan belt) goes (though not in urban congestion I would guess). Last time my fan belt went I drove home 15 miles on the motorway then another 20 to the garage in Warrington the next morning.

I've always wondered, why did they ge rid of the aircooled engine? What does a water-cooled engie do that an air-cooled doesn't?

I've assumed that if you live in LA or somewhere, sitting in a jam on the freeway when it's 90 outside isn't great for the engine even with a fan and they pandered to the US market. Here in the chilly UK I've sat in a jam when it was 80 and the temp gauge got up to the 10pm marker but went no further.

I believe the real reason for dropping 'air cooled' for 'water cooled' is that you are able to reduce emissions and thus comply with the legislation for newer cars. Air cooled cars need bigger tolerances within the engine (hence the reason 993's will consume a little more oil) because they do not warm up as uniformly as a water cooled engine. Reducing the tolerances means the engines are 'cleaner' and enabled Porsche to meet the new regulations. It's for similar reasons, I believe, that in the boat outboard & mtorocycle engine markets, there is a move to 4 stroke from 2 stroke (4 strokes run 'cleaner' that 2 strokes).

Regards
Anton

Another reason I like my 993 4S, apart from the exterior, is that I really like the old-style interior with the round instruments. I find that today, almost all car interiors look similar. I also like the steeper windshield. When I get into my car, it is like putting on a suit, feels really snug.
