Bad SC Day - MOT et al

I know I need new front tyres and I know I should do a full re-alignment and I know I should get that mirror that's hanging off fixed and I know that a strut brace will work wonders for the handling and add 50bhp. So far , so far credit card justified.

What I didn't need was an MOT fail which as well as the fronts (expected) also said that the rust by the battery was a fail.....

That'll be £440 + vat please sir - ouch...... Oh and should I get the wing done at the same time ? Oh that'll be the thick end of £1400 incl. wing sir.

Bad news Richard, I'm just having a b-post repaired out in Stowmarket for a reasonable cost but done by a real old fashioned craftsman. I could give you the number if you don't mind travelling. I'm not sure how that is a MOT failure unless the rust is structural and comes within a certain distance of a suspension mount point. Could be the torsion bar support cross beam is regarded as a suspension part although it's fixed to the 'tub' not the wing. The wing is a seperate non structural item really. Adds rigidity I guess and weight of course. Now's the time to strip off that crusty old metal add some fibregalss and new wheels and build something radical! [:D]

If the battery is not secured or looks like it might not be in the next 12 months then it's a fail. Lots of MOT guys fail rust on inner wings regardless of where it is in my experience.

Just had a two grand estimate for my G-Wagen's MOT and what looks like another messed up cam belt on our Scenic diesel (third in three months) Richard so count yourself lucky young man [8D]

My SC had exactly the same rot in exactly the same place! Yours is slightly further gone than mine was so I didn't get to the point where it failed the MOT, but I was warned on the last one.

I found a body shop that has removed the wing (essential of course) cut out the bad metal & welded in new. I also had a few bubbles round the petrol flap (surprise surprise) and a bubble on the rear wing so these were also cut out and fixed with new metal.


All this, plus the painting of the front & rear wings, inner wing, wiper panel fully OEM type sealing of the under-wing & the whole car waxoiled cost less than £700 inc vat.

The paintwork is superb & I'm highly delighted with the job.

I looked around for six months till I found a body shop with old-fashioned skills that didn't take the micky on prices. (A classic car specialist quoted me £2500 for the same work!)

I don't feel like spending a fortune on my SC when at the end of the day it's only worth 8-9K. If it was a 2.7RS I would think again, but it's not. I use the car & just want to keep it tidy.

Bones do you have the details of the person in stowmarket you are using for the b post?

I live in ipswich and have a similar bit of work required on my 3.2.

would be interested in what you think of the job when its complete

Pretty much my view. If you've seen my other thread you'll know I have a number of wing issues but it seems damn expensive to replace the whole wing. Where did you get your work done ? Langley Autocraft have quoted me 360 + 60 + vat just for the battery area rust and I suspect there's lots more to do. My immediate problem of course is the MOT and the need to get it done sooner rather than later but if I can get more work done...
 
I live in Harrogate, Yorkshire. I suspect you will be down south somewhere!

You will find a good bodyshop at reasonable rates, just keep looking.

When I found what I thought was the right place i took my partners Rover
in for a small job to check out their work before the Porker was booked
in.

There must be hundreds of suitable bodyshops nationwide, it's just a
case of finding them!!

My car has rotted in the same place as Dugsud shows in the picture but the bumper iron bracket was rotted along its top edge as well. I drilled out the spot welds and repaired the bracket as its a Porsche only part £65 + vat. I have now cut out the rust in the inner wing and am in the process of making some plates to weld in I will then refit/reweld the bumper iron back on. This is another great rust trap from Porsche. Iam also going to move the screen wash bottle to inside the boot and replace with a smaller bottle. I managed to find a wing from PM sportscars in Derbyshire £250 +delivery + vat. Very clean from an American car I have painted the inside with Finnigans to protect it. Then got to finish the B-post and refit the wing plus some paint and a MOT then I might get to drive it. This rust on the inner wings is an area that everyone needs to check just look behind the battery live terminal end. Sorry.

Baz some time ago I came across a lighweight small capacity bottle for 911s - in the States I think - but haven't since been able to find it again. If you search on Google you may have better luck than I. Let me know if you find one.

I have considered moving the washer bottle into the boot after seeing a great shot of one on Pelican Parts. I copied the picture if you are interested and could tell me how to attach it to one of these messages.

Ian hit the 'Post Reply' button and when you have inserted some text tick'embed picture in post' and 'click here to upload'. The 'growse' box pops up where you choose the .jpg etc. file from your computer. Look forward to seeing the pic. If you can't do it post the Pelican link.
 
Me too. Thats's just a drinks bottle like I use at the Gym. That would be easy to set up . I feel another project coming on! [:)]

Flatterer.......Seems pretty straight forward Ian. The following applies to a car without carpets. Find the feed from the washer bottle pump, remove old bottle . Fasten new bottle to inner wing . Connect up and you are away. If you have carpets fitted there is plenty of space to fit a bottle right under the bonnet lock plate. Method of fastening will depend on size of bottle I suggest no more than a litre, 12 liter would be better otherwise there is no point. I'll get round to this by the end of summer I guess.
 
No , from memory the pump's somewhere forward of the battery below the front inner side bumper.
