Bass boost for 944`s

Hi all, i was just wondering has anyone fitted 6x9" speakers in the rear panels, as i didnt know you could[8D], so behold and i have just done it[:)]..... it took a little persuasion but they are in and sound magnificant. i had fitted a 300w poineer active bass bin in the boot i`am thinking of removing it as the 6x9"s sound so balanced with the the front originals, it took a little cutting of metal and comprimising on one fixing but what a differance, i was shocked by the bass increase as speakers are as only good as the cavity behind them, and the rear quarters act as a great big bass reflex porthole, i am so chuffed they sound tops..........

I'm jealous! Because mine's a cabriolet I don't think there's room in the back to replace the 6x4s with 6x9s - I think the roof mechanism would complain. However, there's hope on the horizon - next week I'm off to a specialist in Preston who is going to fit soundproofing in the doors, add a small amplifier to power the JBL speakers I have installed, and hopefully fit 6x9s in the front where the cabriolet has more room because the front part of the window is fixed.

The plan is to leave the original covers in place so that at first glance it will still look original - I really don't want to carve the door cards up even though this will affect the sound a little.

George,

I'll be surprised if you can get 6x9's in the front doors and still fit the original covers. All the best to the chap trying tho'.

My S2 has a small amp in the boot and some aftermarket speakers (6x4) in the front doors. It sounds better than standard, but still needs something to help the bass out. I am contemplating a small sub in one of the rear side panels, but have yet to really search for anything small enough to fit.

(Also, the car is absorbing quite a lot of cash at the mo, so I am reluctant to pay for non-essentials, and I don't have a fat lot of time!)

George, you are much braver than me! I chickened out cutting my 944 up to fit rear speakers[:D]and settled for an upgrade front pair with a base box to complement the sound in the boot.

All being well, they won't need to cut the metal, the new 6x9 speakers will fit behind the existing 6x4 hole with new holes drilled to match and it will have some spacers in to prevent the cones from hitting the metal, then since the original holes will still be in place, fitting the original covers on shouldn't be a big deal. That's the plan anyway! I know it's not perfect hiding some of the speaker behind metal, but the worst that can do is mask some treble, which tends to come from the centre of the speaker so might not be a problem.

I sure will. If any of you are at Silverstone, then the car should be done by then and it will be on display with the 944's.

I quite like the idea of that one myself!Iam sure this would be easy enough to make and quite reasonable to do[8|]

I would have tought the speakers would sound better and look a whole lot better if they were set into the carpet with grilles over the top. I would cut the two carpet flaps off the main boot carpet and glue them to the mdf bin covers permantly. Cut holes for the speakers and fix . then you can lift the centre carpet to get to the tools wheel etc leaving the speakers in place. When you want to store stuff in the right hand side bin just lift the mdf carpet and speaker out in one piece. same thing with battery access.
I would still have my boot cover over anyway so nothing would show but the sound wouldn't be so muffled as it would under carpet.
Anyway you shouldn't put anything close to the speaker diaphram because it would resinate and prevent the diaphram from moving in and out

Hi Oli. I decided I'd have a go at this myself - and it worked! have a look at the new thread "6x9 speakers in 944 Cab". It was a bit tight, but they've fitted in OK and have made a huge difference to the sound quality. Next project - bigger rear speakers.

George,

Thanks ... I'm off to have a gander!

Fitting 6x9s in panels is still ahead(not too far i guess)..but i removed the upper bit of back seat and replaced it with a custom box which includes a pop up rear "boot" 4 6x9s and a 1000W JBL bass element..
As the car is currently on SORN i've taken out the amp(i will need something a bit more powerful)..but i hope to complete the system by next summer..same time as the car..so i'd have 8 6x9s and a bass element..or i just might leave the panels uncut and go surround...[8D]

I'll bet that sounds amazing, but my priorities are to keep the car as original looking as possible, yett still have a reasonable sound quality. The 2 6x9s have gone a long way towards that, and I'm going to have an amplifier fitted next, then see if there's anything that can be done with the rear speakers.

I've got a really small amp that i found attached near the steering column under dash(on a 1982 944 Lux)..it seemed like a factory fit to me..you can have it if you're interested..

Cheers - that sounds really tempting. I've got it booked in with a company in Preston tomorrow - they're going to either put better rear speakers in, a concealed sub-woofer, or an amp, so if it's not too late, I'll get them to forget the amp and I'll have a go with yours. I'll let you know tomorrow.

No problem..just don't get your hopes too high..it's only a 2 channel amp 11.5cmX11.5cmX3.5cm..considering size and age i doubt that it has much power..but you never know..[;)]

To be honest, the route I'd recommend for better sound if you are starting with a standard system in any car would be:

Small amp for front speakers and disconnect rear speakers (if of the same size.)
Concealed sub with an amp (seperate, or a single bigger amp to also run the fronts.)
Better head unit
Better front speakers

Then it's down to spending more money on each single component of the set-up - i.e. buy a better amp for the front, better speakers again etc etc etc. Lack of power is the usual problem for most standard installations, and this is cured by a better amp. You may be surprised how much bass you can get out of a 6x4 if you have a good amp hooked up to it. No, really.

ETA: Oh, and forget any "Maximum" power figure on any piece of car audio equipment. The real figure is the RMS (Root Mean Square) figure, which is around half the maximum. (And the figures for any head unit have probably been doubled again for good measure, so divide by four to get a realistic value.)
