Battery charger

Hello everyone.
Did not use my vehicle for 3 weeks and the battery is flat now...[:mad:] Start to think how to avoid this pleasant experience in the future....
Does anyone know if the battery charger that is used on newer porsches (plug in the lighter socket) will work for 993?
Any other options?

Try it.

Switch off ignition and see if lighter still works.

If it does, then I should think that it will work for you.
 
Or just buy a decent optimate. Just bought one for my 993 as battery went flat recently & took out my imobiliser pcb with it. Nice!!! Was an oxford product I bought so checks the battery & just detects its condition from time to time & puts the odd .3amp into it as and when neccesary to keep it in good condition. Can also be used for motorbikes & bigger batteries so a good tool to have to avoid disappointment of flat batteries....Merry Xmas....Stu
 
Just bought a Ctek charger and conditioner from a company called THRE360 model XS3600 cost ÂŁ50 inc pp this is the best one to buy will fully charge your battery and then trickle charge it for as long as you leave it on ,no more flat batteries .

I use a Discarnect, as my garage has no power supply. I also top up the security with a Disklock & remove the DME relay (and spare). Just another option for anyone with no power to their baby's hibernation nest!

When using a trickle type charger or conditioner connected direct to the battery is it necessary to disable the luggage compartment light?

Otherwise there will always be a current drain which the charger will be trying to compensate for, and charging via the lighter will remove the need to do this.

The reason I ask is the only way I have found to disable the light is by removing either the bulb or fuse while trickle charging.

 
Hi I use a Cetec XS 3600 , which I plug into the fag socket of my '96 993 cab , I have used it for over a year and it is a great bit of kit , and no problems with luggage compartment lights with this connection method . I have heard of issues connecting this way on some cars , but fine on mine .
 
I've got an Airflow battery conditioner which has does a great job for the past 4 years or so, cost ÂŁ35.

It attaches via crocodile clips to the battery terminals and the wire is pretty thin so you can close the luggage compartment completely on it without any problems.
 
Have both an Optimate and the BMW bike charger.
With the right fitting for the lighter socket, either work fine.

With the bonnet open just push down the bonnet latch with your fingers. The light will go out. Use the normal lever inside the car to reset to be able to re-close the bonnet when required.

If you disable the luggage light by disconnecting it, the interior lights will still be on, so you need to switch them off as well. It might also affect the light in the engine compartment, so this might need to be disconnected as well. I suggest using Ian's solution above, or do what I do and move the power cable to the edge of the bonnet and this should allow enough levarage for the bonnet to snap shut without damaging anything. This is also more secure as you can lock and alarm the car as normal.
 
Or just close the bonnet as the cable is quite thin on a Ctek ,I usualy place it between the front edge seal and the bumper and I do it this way so I can see what the conditioner is doing
It also means that I can lock an alarm the car
 
I have just tried the lighter socket as an alternative method of condition charging, and can confirm that on my car (C4 coupe) the socket is isolated when the ignition is switched off (tested with a circuit tester), therefore it appears it is not possible to connect the charger via the lighter socket.

 
I have an August '96 car , C2 cab , which I have connected my charger through the fag lighter , and is working fine , and has done for 18 months now , maybe its a C4 thing , or even a coup'e thing ??
 
No this is not a C4 thing... I have 4S and I checked it yesterday... The lighter works with the key out...
 
It may be to do with the immobiliser set up on my car, I'll see if I can find out some more.
 
I'm looking at same problem. I have an Airflow which has done a really good job of keeping battery in condition on previous cars but has to be connected direct to terminals.

My q. is - if I use Ian's excellent suggestion of pressing down bonnet release thus fooling the luggage compartment light in to going off, will I still be able to lock and set the alarm ( H and P type). My insurer insists that the car should be locked and alarmed when unattended overnight.

Otherwise I am faced with running cable through the gap between closed bonnet and body which I worry about ( or is there plenty of clearance given by rubber seals ?) - OR going out every morning and evening and attaching/detaching which woulkd be a pain.

Thoughts please folks

Although the drivers manual clearly states (page 54) 'The cigarette lighter works even when the key is not in the ignition' mine does not! and I suspect it relates to how the immobiliser is wired even though it appears to be the orginal Porsche PA1000 type.

The suggestion of closing the bonnet latch does isolate both interior and luggage lights after a few minutes, which is a significant impovement over removing the bulb or fuse.
