Hi All,

Anybody going to the Bedford Autodrome this coming Saturday? This is a Porsche Club GB open pit lane track day on the full Gran Tourismo circuit.

I don't have a passenger for the day, so if anybody fancies a ride (passengers need to register and pay a moderate fee to the organiser), you're more than welcome. [:)]

Regards,
Andrew

Not me I'm afraid, bit skint and if I'm honest a bit bored of the GT circuit. I fancy trying the West circuit sometime, but it's not likely to happen this year.
Hope you have a great day.
Peter

Hi All,

Bedford was a fantastic day and the rain held off until after 4pm! Lots of exotic machinery and many GT3 and GT3RS models in attendance![:)] The 968 Supercharged CS was there too with 440bhp!

We used the new GT circuit - the technical section at the back has changed slightly. Quite a few tight hairpins and very heavy on brakes. The circuit was great, but the long straights made it hard work (GT3RS = 155mph+ vs. 130mph max in my 944 Turbo[]). In my last few sesions, the Avon slicks finally started losing chunks of rubber around the edge so, late in the afternoon I changed the fronts around to get one final session out of them. Tested the new electronic switchable exhaust too - even on full loud it did not attract the attention of the noise police[;)]

All in all, a great day apart from seeing a fellow driver's 928GT track car seize its engine[:(]

Regards,
Andrew

Hi Andrew.
Whats an electronic switchable exhaust??

Jason

Hi Jason,

It's a 3" diameter performance exhaust system (3" along the full length of the complete exhaust) with a quiet and noisy setting that is electronically switchable inside the car.

Andrew

That sounds interesting. You just in the testing stages at the moment?

Hi Jason / Lee,

The prototype has been tested on different cars including mine (and dyno tested also). It is almost ready for production.

The system has no centre silencer and all silencing is achieved with a dual port single silencer at the rear. Solid state electronics switch the electronic control valve. The change from quiet to noisy happens in 2-3 seconds and is achieved with a flick of a switch on the centre console. I'll post some links to some sound files later today. It makes a 944 Turbo sound like a V8 Ferrari - quite an addictive sound [:)]

To me thats the only thing lacking in our cars, but like the sound of the above[:D]

Be very interested in that

Look forward to more info Andrew

Andy of Promax demonstrated the exhaust for me as fitted to his car the other week - it does sound brilliant and the "mute" button is a handy thing too. [:)]

Am certainly looking to get one.

OOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.................................(pass the tissues[8D])

I`ve missed a raucous exhaust note with my 951 having had 105+ db cars in the past (with air leaks carefully introduced for all that popping and banging on the over run [;)][;)]) so would be interested. Mind you my mate and his son have said that when mine is hard charging past their soft top F360 mine sounds really loud, problem is I cant hear it but know it is loud at 3000+ as pedestrians do look around as I approach them.

Hi All,

I have uploaded a short video so you can hear the exhaust. The initial run is with the 'quiet' setting. After the first roundabout, it is then switched to 'loud'[;)]

It's not a great video and the sound is poor (as everything in the car is picked up), but it should give you an idea.

The video link is:
www.promaxmotorsport.com/video/exhaust.wmv (requires Windows Media Player). File will stream to your player and is about 65mb in size. Suggest you right click on URL and select 'save target as' and then download complete file (takes between 2 and 8 mins depending on DSL speed).

Regards,
Andrew

Very, very clever [8D] I wish I'd come over to Bedford now just to have a listen from the outside.

Note to MarkK - you need one of these [:D]

So the red devil can make it past a noise test

Slightly daft question but if on full loud it doesn't break the noise limits then why have the complexities of the switchable system and have it on full loud all the time?

Loved the video, rorty snarling beast one minute, refined boulevard cruiser the next! Two cars in one!

Hi Scott,

Not a daft question at all. Bedford is quite tolerant of noise, but does have a static noise test and a drive by. The static is passed with the exhaust in quiet mode (loud mode would be too high). In drive by, despite the fact that you can really hear it track side (according to onlookers), it will not trip the noise meters on full loud.

Other circuits have much lower noise limits. On the road, you may not want to attract attention to yourself as you cruise past a police unit or travel through a built up area - so you just switch to quiet. Sometimes, you may just want peace and quiet when driving. On another occasion driving down your favourite country road (or through a long tunnel), you may want to listen to that rich throaty gumble that changes to a screaming wail as you reach max rpm! It really is fun and as Markk says, it almost gives you two cars in one - a car with split personality!

Regards,
Andrew

Andrew, is the noise just for effect or is there a performance benefit to the 'loud' setting?
