Best colour for an S2

Ok, I have got my hands on a really good shell and I am planning to put together the mother of all S2's.
With a little help from my friends I am hoping to emerge from the garage with either a 968 engined S2 or have my S2 built into the new shell.

So.... What colour should I paint it?...

Before we start I promised myself I'd never have a gaurds red car ever again so no reds please.

I quite like that yellow that you see on the 968 CS. I think it would suit a 944 pretty well too.

Cobalt Blue looks very good on 968, never seen a 944 in that colour I think the basic shape of the car would suit it.[:)]
Cheers,

It depends if you want to paint it a colour that the S2 was available in or just a really cool colour, and if it's going to be your road or race car.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Personally I always like the 70's 911 colours like blood orange and viper green. A little birdy told me they might be getting a re-release, which could make them uber-fashionable again also...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Failing that the orange that Performance Car painted their "Project 944 ClubSport" back in 1996 looked very good. Or what about the Gulf blue with orange stripe, or some other classic Porsche racing livery?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If you want subtle you may as well go for an original colour like Titanium or Baltic blue. I really like Cobalt blue on the cab, but it somehow loses its "wow-factor" on the coupe in my eyes - still nice, but nothing special (which is what I think of Glacier if I'm being serious and honest). I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Rubystone having thought I would never want a car that colour and recently quite fancying one, and that is an unusual option for a 944. Last suggestion is Speed yellow or Riviera blue (which is the later, brighter blue) from the 968 ClubSport.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I'm in agreement with Fen. If I was "fresh painting" a shell I'd be going for non-std.

(Bizarrely I was googling last night for the Performance Car 944 project...... came up with nothing).

I could cope with non-porche colours. Dayglow orange has an appeal. At the other end of the "in your face" spectrum I've always really liked the green used for the Lotus Carlton / Omega. The one that's almost black, but the green comes through in certain lights. Doesn't picture well (example HERE , but the effect is lovely in the metal.

Liveries are a great idea. The Gulf colours are stiking, but I have a personal issue with them ~ I'm "slightly red/green colour blind" and the Gulf combo is one that sends my eyes scatty ` one eye sees the blue as marginally brighter than the orange, and the other eye sees the reverse. The effect is like one of these "Magic Eye" 3-D images. [&:] So don't go for that OK? [;)]

Has there ever been a Martini striped 944?

I know this is a model. but it looks superb click me .

And even subtle stripes on an Integrale (with it's 944-esque arches) look corking. ooh ooh - click me [8D]

There as a Martini striped 924 for sure, but it was basically a white car with stripes similar to the 'grale and matching upholstery.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]The Lotus Carlton suggestion reminded me that a guy in Sweden who posts on Rennlist has a Porsche Rainforest green 944T and that looks awesome in the pics.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I happened to find most of the PC issues with the 944 project in when I was reorganising the loft on Thursday. Do you want me to scan them and mail then to you, mik?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Ooh yeah. That would be great [8D] . I did enter the compo at the time, but I didn't win [] Does anyone know if the car is still in existance?

I'd go for the Riviera blue from a 968 Clubsport too. Also looks great on 911 RS models, it's really in your face [8D]

For sure, Fen, you appear to be speaking at, for sure, an F1 post race conference, for sure.

Would you like to thank the team for their effort, for sure? [;)]

So, you are potentially building a very valuable car which you could ruin if you choose the wrong colour? No pressure then. [:D]

I'm inclined to agree with Fen (I hate it when that happens) so would go for a colour that Porsche might have used on the 944 even if they didn't. Any pre or post 944 colour is fine, but it has to be a Porsche colour.

As an owner of a black car I really wouldn't go for a dark colour 'cos they are a sod to keep clean. For a track or race car you need a colour that is easy to repair/match so that counts out metallics, pearls, flip flops etc. You also need to consider what other cars you run with because (as Rick will testify) all 944's look the same unless they are an unusual colour.

Car colours are very cyclical as when people get to an age when they can spec a new car they don't generally have the same colour that their parents did. We've had silver for the last ten years and have moved to black and white as being trendy colours.

What are you going to do with the car? If you might use it for every day motoring, and as a result have to park it somewhere, you don't necessarily want a colour that attracts too much attention - I removed Beakys "PORSCHE" sunstrip logo as it made him stand out. If one was to accidentally break a speed limit in front of an officer of the law then the anonymity of a standard colour might be advantageous - it wasn't me officer.

944's inevitably attract the attention of luke warm hatch driving Chavs with bling wheels and tin can exhausts. A Chav favourite colour is only going to make things worse.

So where does that leave you? Looks like guards red [:D] .

There was a nice Martini 924 on eBay the other day, its number is: 4627493110

I've just searched and found a sticker kit on eBay: 8052304666
I'm quite taken by this and am half tempted to fit it for a few months before I get the car resprayed to see if I like it.

Talking of the respray, I'm toying with the idea of a fresh coat of white (probably Alpine White but I'll be checking a few other shades out first) and am toying with the idea of doing something a bit different - there was a 968 racecar running in one of the UK series last year which was white but with the rear painted cobalt blue, the line between the two running from the top of the spoiler at an angle and finishing up just behing the front wheels, with the wheels colour coded to match. I thought it looked stunning, and great for track use but maybe a bit much for an everyday car.

I've got a picture here somewhere but I'd need to scan it at work to post it.

thanks for your ideas guys... the car will be used on the road and most definatly will be spending an awful lot of time on the track, so I agree with you John I really dont want to be going for mettalics as much as i Luuuuuuurrve the colour of the Lotus Carlton... I was even toying with the idea of the Mercedes Blue/black.
The martini colours did cross my mind, as did the Rothmans colours ala 924GT.

Yellow..?.....erm... no. and i have seen a 944 in Maritime and Riviera blus and they didnt look "right".
Rubystone... I would love to have the guts to own a pink 944 but its a colour that only works on a 964 IMHO.

Fen, if your emailing stuff out I'd love a copy... just to see what an orange 944 looks like.

I'll be searching the web for "classic" porsche colours and see what comes up...

Go for it Peter [8D]

For £53 its got to be worth a play for a few months

I've just had a look at that e-gay Martini 924, and I'd have to say that is absolutely not what I had in mind. It looks mince. []

Apologies if the owner is reading this....... link to said car...... don't click if you've eaten recently [;)]

Those decals however could be very [8D].
ebay decal link for lazy searchers

Peter - go on. Buy it. Ah go on. Go on go on go on. Would love to see an "on car" image [:D] I'm assuming vinyl stickers can be removed without damage to the paint underneath?

Well if you are strongly considering this option, then (given that there is no "official" 944 livery to copy) it may be worth getting in touch with Andy Blackmore. He's always been active on the SEAT forum, and is a friendly bloke. You can see his credentials via his site HERE . I'm sure he could come up with something that would work very well with the lines of the 944, and he'll know where to have this done too. In saying this, I have absolutely no idea what it would cost. []

Flip flop colours are actually very easy to match. A friend of mine runs a bodyshop, and we were discussing the practicality of them soon after another friend had ordered his TVR Cerbera in a rather interesting purple/blue flip flop.

He said that they're actually easier to match than a flat colour, because a slight colour mismatch doesn't show up as it would with a flat colour.

Good choice. I trust the wheels will be black or dark grey?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'll scan the PC mags I can find tomorrow and send them and maybe look for the missing installments also if I get time. I'll upload them to my fotopic site like I did with the caliper refurb instructions and that way there is no problem with mailbox size limits and anyone else who is interested can see them also.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I have my black 16" teledials already and I'll send my Silver Rose wheels off to get done in either black or dark grey when the time is right.

Im going to see the shell tomorrow so hopefully it'll be a start to a very "relaxed" transformation.... Im not planning to get the car on the road any time this year... got too many trackdays planned!
But hopefully for the start of the 2007 season I'll be up and running....

I'll be posting quite heavily in the coming months as i start to look at all of the things that i'll want doing to the car. All of my M030 and KW stuff will come over from my car but i was thinking about non pop up lights with HID units???? So many mods.... so little money!!!
