Best tyres for a 3.2 Carrera?

I've not long been the owner of an '86 3.2 Carrera. The car has come with a set of Viking tyres which I suspect are probably not the best in terms of grip. To be honest I've not really felt a problem with them although the car does seam to understeer a bit too easily in the wet, although being new to 911's I don't know if that's normal and I am still learning the cars limits.

I'll only be covering a maximum of 6000 miles/yr so wear is not an issue, my main priority being good wet grip.

Marangoni Zeta Lineas look good. Any other suggestions and do they really have to have the "˜N' rating or is this just a good way to relieve me of cash!

'N' rated tyres are the same price as their non-N rated equivalent, so I assume you want to keep away from the main brands i.e. Michs, Pirelli, Conti, Duns, Bridge, Yoko?

.........not particularly its just from my experience the main (most expensive) brands are not necessarily the best.

For mainly road and the odd track.

Bridgestone SO2's, not SO3's or SO2A's , if you want to stay N rated.

Plenty of others on here use Khumo, Conway and other 'cheaper' brands.

Hi,

What are the problems with the Bridgestone SO3's and SO2A'S?

Cheers

Pete

Thanks Mark, I've heard mention before that the S02's are very good but slightly confused that you say not the S03's as I think these are the replacement for the S02

Martin.

N-ratings weren't even around in 1986. I wouldn't bother looking for N-rated tyres as a prerequisite to tyre choice for a 3.2 as the engineering and performance of todays tyres far exceed what was available during the mid-80s.

Having had personal experience of both on previous cars, in terms of wet weather performance and ones that are suitable for the level of performance of the 3.2, the Dunlop SP9000 and Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s are definitely two excellent options.

S-02s are excellent all round (although softer/not as long lasting as either the Goodyear or Dunlops mentioned). The S-03s have exceptionally stiff sidewalls that impair the ride on anything but the smoothest of roads. S-03s also turn into concrete rubberbands once the tread is half worn... these were some of the worst tyres I had ever tried...

Adrien has answered the question for me.

The Bridgestone S range also has a nice rim protector, excellent for Fuchs.

Thanks guys that gives me something to go at. I'll take a look at the S02's and maybe some alternatives like the Khomo's.

I run Kumhos on my 1980 SC targa with no problems at all, very good tyres IMHO especially when compared with the major brands price wise. I also run Kumhos on my Alfa GTV which are great value too compared with the pirellis Alfa recommend.

Mine has the Kumho Ecsta 712's (205/50 R16 Fr) & (245/45 R16 Rr) on 7" & 9" Fuchs.

I do know however that these tyres are no longer available in the UK, they have been replaced/upgraded with the Kumho Ecsta KU31, which according to all the info on the Kumho website & from the recomendation of my local tyre dealer is a superior tyre to the 712.

If you can find a tyre centre local to you who is prepared to fit the tyres you source (Should cost about £10 a corner -Valves, Blanacing , old tyre disposal etc) Try www.mytyres.co.uk as they have good prices for the Kumhos.

Hope this all helps[:D]

Thanks for that Dan [:D] Just need to check my rim widths now and decide what the best size is.
I've got 16" Fuchs fitted with 205x55x16 on the front and 225x60x16 on the rear but not sure if that's the best combo as the guy I bought the car off ran a tyre fitting outfit so suspect he may have just fitted what was available in the range he sold[]

How do you find the 712's in the wet? the tread pattern looks like it may be more of a dry tyre

If you have the standard 16" fuchs, they will be 6" fronts & 7" rears so the tyre sizes you say sound about right (I will double check my sizes when I get home, the rears are defo correct but now you have made me think about the front!) &" rears should have 225 width tyres as standard, that I am sure of.

The tyre is listed as an all weather tyre and the dry performance is supurb, the car is a little handful in the wet but that I attribute to the legendary 911 handling rather than the Kumhos (its far better now than it was on the worn dunlops that were on the wheels when I bought it - wet or dry).

The tyres are directional (ie the cannot be swapped (sides) once on the car) and the pattern is supposed to aid expelling the water from the tyre when its rotating according to the manufacturers info.

Yep you're right Chris I checked the handbook last night and it said 225x50x16 at the rear so thats another good reason to change them.

Kumho Ecsta MX look good for dry grip Andy but on a test I read wern't the best in the wet which is what I really want.

My vote would be for the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 - I have found them very good for grip and wear on every car I've tried, including my 3.2.

My 2p[;)]

[:)]Yes I agree the goodyear eagle f1 GSD3 have been a n excellent tyre. Fantastic in the wet and you can push the car to its limits on the track as well. They also have a bit of a rim protector so the fuchs will be safer. I paid £100 per tyre including fitting 12 months ago.Fitted to a clubsport.
