Bilstein Inserts

Has anyone experience of the Bilstein B6 inserts for the front struts, are they a direct replacement for the factory insert, most struts I have rebuilt have a fine threaded nut at the top of the tube that holds the insert are 944 the same ?

As for springs, who's are recommended to slightly lower the front.

I plan rear B6 shocks also.

If you lower the front then you will definitely have to re-index the rear, which is quite a commitment work-wise. The reason is that the rears are already jack-up higher than originally intended to meet federal bumper requirements. The sills aren't level but they have always been like this so we tend not to notice (until you see an otherwise standard car which had had the rear lowered), but lowering the front further will make it particularly obvious.
 
Isn't it possible to get the rear a bit lower by adjusting this, ie loosening the bolt and eccentric bolt, or is this the same as indexing ?

Yes, in theory. Some people have been lucky and managed to adjust both sides by a suitable amount, but theyre really there to adjust them on the production line and for every lucky fellow there are lots who have to re-index.
 
Cheers Simon, so the plan is to see if I can get some simple adjustment on the rear first and if so go for lower springs and Bilsteins, if no go easily on the rear I'll go new OPC all round and be Mr Standard ride height [:D]

 
about your question on struts... I have a '91 S2 with standard suspension (sealed - no threaded caps on my struts) so my only option is Koni inserts that require the existing strut to be cut open, contents removed, hole drilled in the bottom and Koni insert used to replace the factory bits. I believe the sport suspension and/or M030 option suspension may have rebuild-able struts in the S2 years - they certainly were in the earlier years - which means the top screws off and the internals can be extracted.

I understand Bilstein inserts work on pre-89 (need to confirm this) as the strut tubes are larger than the later years when the spring diameters were reduced to accommodate ABS pumps, etc. If you search the forums here you should find some posts that describe the use of Bilstein inserts, what year struts they fit and other modifications (spring perches for smaller diameter springs, etc.) that were made to use specific struts in later model turbos and S2s.

The ride height adjustment on the rear will give you approximately 1" drop from standard. Any more and you need to re-index by rotating the torsion bars. For the late cars this means removing the rear suspension (torsion tube which captures the inner ends of the torsion bars) from the car and removing the control arms to access the torsion bar on each side (the big tube in your partial diagram with no number showing captures the outer end of the torsion bar and "connects" it to the spring plate). Torsion bars have different numbers of teeth on each end so the bars can be rotated to specific degrees of orientation to the spring plates (no 22 in your diagram) and then reassembled. This process changes the angle of the spring plate to the torsion bar mounts thereby resetting the vehicle ride height while maintaining the range of motion (and effective spring action) of the torsion bar.

Sorry - not the definitive breakdown but hopefully this will trigger one of the experts.

Olli Snellman converts late strut housings to work with Bilstein inserts - might be worth dropping him a line (he's a member on here)

Fitted them to my old early Lux and were a straight swap although not so on the later struts. They transformed my tired old suspension although I changed several other parts at the same time including a complete rebush and 968 ARB's. I would say they are a good fast road damper but for track days you would probably want something else.
 
You should only really use the adjuster to finer tune the rear ride height.People do lower their cars using them but it's not the right way to do it. The spring plate and the rear hub should be level with each other and not at an angle.

Only up to '86 struts with threaded inserts will accept Bilstein B6 struts with no modifications.

A friend of mine converts later struts with a modified collar to work specifically with these threaded inserts. If interested, send me a pm and I will pass on his contact info.

Collars can be made. Nut is a Bilstein item which comes with the insert. Original Porsche (VW Super Beetle / Golf I) nut cannot be used since hole in the nut is too small for Bilstein insert's rod. Colars can be made also for another struts like Sachs, Kyb etc. With them oem nut works fine
