Bilstein Inserts

Have to check out from my friend who have a CNC machine. I suppose it depends how many collars are needed.

ORIGINAL: TTM

Only up to '86 struts with threaded inserts will accept Bilstein B6 struts with no modifications.

A friend of mine converts later struts with a modified collar to work specifically with these threaded inserts. If interested, send me a pm and I will pass on his contact info.

The guy I know has several sets available. Just saying.

Thom, what difference does spring diameter make ? We have use same collar version on both 8V & 16V struts. Or do you mean whole strut, not just a collar.

Because S2/968 owners will need converted struts with the smaller lower spring perch, should they want to reuse their original springs.

So your friend is selling whole strut, not just collars. I am aware of the differencies of different strut types. S2 owners can use wider strut version & spring, only spring hat must be used from that same combo. Same thing opposite way. I have a set of 968 struts modified for my 951. I use them because i have a nice set of H & R 968 lowering springs.

Just got off the phone with my friend, he has two S2/968 sets in stock at the moment and 1 set for 944 turbo. Also has some more sets that are currently away being powdercoated in black, so more to come.

He sells each set on an exchange basis, so the price is : €150 + tax (german tax) + your set of old struts that must be straight/undamaged.

Thanks. So, not hugely cheap then - how much are the bilstein inserts themselves?

What qualifies as "Straight/undamaged" in terms of the old struts? I have the Koni inserts in mine at the moment, so the tops have been chopped off. Would he accept them as exchange units?

Depends how low you cut your struts?

I guess that's the big question, along with "How long do the struts need to be when the new collar is welded to the top of them?" For reference, the cutting for fitting the Koni inserts is documented here;

http://www.paragon-products.com/kb_results.asp?ID=50

It doesn't involve removing much of the strut (most of the length removed is the crimped-on cap), but how much is 'too much'?

Oli.

I'd still be interested in just a pair of the threaded CNC'd collars so that I can adapt my own struts as and when.

I would also be interested to know how much to trim off after the original cap has been removed but I guess this can be worked out with all the parts to hand.

All the best, Paul

I suppose the best way to do that is to cut original sealed type struts pressed "nut"

Then make a final cut as high as you can

Then you can remove old internal parts easily

I suppose 150€ is a fair price when you know how much work this mod needs. Final product is usually as good as new. If some of you still need collars let me know; i can ask if my friend wants to fabricate them.

As said I would be interested in just the collars, I'm sure my friend Dave would be also.

Can you ask your fabricator and let us know.

Many thanks, Paul

Oli.

Friend said 325mm from the bottom edge should be ok.

Simon & Oli, send me a mail or pm so that we figure out how to proceed, if you are still interested.

TTM,

Thanks - that's encouraging.

I'm not looking at changing mine now, but am very happy to have had prices for when I do come to change them. My current Koni inserts are about 6 years old, so should have some life in them yet. However as and when they need replacing (how long do inserts last?) then knowing the options will be a good thing.

Olli, did you check with your friend if he could manufacture some more collars ?

Cheers, Paul
