Can anyone provide the correct Bilstein part numbers for the following...

- Front shock absorbers - 964RS - Right: Left:
- Rear shock absorbers - 964RS - Right: Left:

- Front shock absorbers - 993RS (upgrade for 964RS) - Right: Left:

I've emailed Bilstein UK as well but the main contact is away until mid-November.

Many thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,
Just had a look at the Bilstein.de website and their catalogue. Perhaps you have already looked here? In case you haven't i will save you the trouble. The only shocks they list for our car are B6 22-181602 fronts. The B6 suffix suggests a single tube shock and yellow in colour. OE being twin tube and green !!! It may be worth contacting Bilstein directly to see if they do a genuine OE replacement but i suspect it's likely a Porsche only part made under licence to Porsche. Worth a phone call or email though. I think , as my memory comes back , this may have been why i went the KW route. There are possibly better solutions now if you dont go OE. KW now doing a clubsport kit and Bilstein the Wally Rollbar kit. Let me know how you get on.
for info it's something like page 506 in the catalogue. There is also a description of the B6 shock range in the pages closer to the front and some pictures verging on p*rn when it gets to the nice shiny clubsport bits[:D] I would contact Germany direct rather than UK.

Nice post from rennlist Laurence, it's always good to see 964RS owners improving their cars with the fitment of parts from the sublime 993 RS varaiant! [:D]

Thanks for the input Laurence and Paul. You can see why I asked here now, the Bilstein catalogue is unclear to say the least. I've emailed Bilstein UK and haven't received an answer. The main contact is away until mid-November.

I'd really like to go the Bilstein route to keep things as authentic as possible, but may have to consider other routes. Also my brother's neighbour in Germany works at the Bilstein Thyssenkrupp factory and can get me Bilstein mit Größe dicount.

I'm going to email Bilstein in Germany direct. I'll post back the results.

Rich....I was under the impression that quite a few owners had their existing shocks refurbed at Bilstein in the Uk, as opposed to an outright purchase of a new unit.

If not through Bilstein direct, Chris at centre gravity has a contact to overhaul them.

Have you considered that route?

Yes, fully refurbed rears (by Bilstein UK) and new 993RS fronts (from Germany) might be the way to go.

Bilstein UK will refurb rears for ~£100 each, I understand that they are unable to refurb the fronts. I can let you have the Porsche part number for the fronts if that helps ? I think they cost around £400 each from memory. As mentioned above many owners replace the fronts with the 93RS OEM part. It's probably worth replacing the springs whilst you're changing the dampers [;)]

Right then, I've had a long email conversation with someone representing Bilstein UK - who I suspect is actually in Europe.

This is what I've been told:

- 964RS OE Twintube Shock Absorbers are NO LONGER AVAILABLE from Bilstein.
- There are a few remaining front rights in stock, but no front left at all.
- There are NO 964RS REARS AVAILABLE from Bilstein.
- 993RS Fronts are NO LONGER AVAILABLE from Bilstein.
- Rears can be rebuilt for around £80+vat each, and the parts are readily available to do so. Fronts CANNOT be rebuilt.
- The Walter Röhrl kit is part number 48-137539 and its available from UK stock - the RRP is £2076 plus vat.
- It is NOT advisable to use only the Walter Rohrl fronts with OE rebuilt rears - and anyway they only sell the WR kit as a complete kit.

I guess the only way to get OE fronts (either 964RS or 993RS) is to ask Porsche to see if they still have stock.

Fronts cannot be rebuilt?

Is that just for 964 or 993 as well?

It makes sense to get something on the car that can be overhauled. especially if you get the urge to track the car Rich.

I assume it's the same for 993RS fronts if they're twintube design? At Bilstein the cupboards are bare and they can't be rebuilt.

Just in case of any doubt YOU CANNOT REBUILD THE TWIN TUBE DESIGN SHOCK ! I would think there would be little problem getting new ones rhrough Porsche. I know it's worth saying never say never as some bright spark will come on here and say it's possible. But i am 100% sure Bilstein DONT rebuild the 64RS fronts. I went through this several years back when i swapped to KW's (still using the original monoballs ) . If i were doing it again I might well opt for either the Clubsport KW kit or the Wally Rollbar kit as i think both come with new monoball top plates. But of course everyone wants originality don't they ? For a road only car i would go for the 993 RS dampers and leave it at that. For track only , only your wallet will limit the possibilities, Ohlins , JRZ etc etc
I can't be 100% sure without looking at my original RS shocks (i still have them ) but i think one of the reasons the twin tubes cant be rebuilt is that the top of the sock is peened or riveted on, where as the HD or cup single tube shock is a screw top . But i may well be talking spheric's.
Paul, i am only suggesting using the 993RS part if your not serious about tracking it[:D][8D]
P.S i think 993 RS went back to single tube but someone might like to confirm this ?

I've asked Bilstein the question re 993RS fronts. I'll post the reply.

Question re 964RS / 993RS availability also asked to my parts bloke at Porsche OPC.

I'm thinking Wally Roll-Up or KW kit might have to be the accepted way forward.

Your theory suddenly makes sense Laurence, use a part that on track that cannot be refurbished, you can then come into the pits and explain the reason for the mobile chicane was down to preservation of the front shocks...it all clicks into place now! [:D]

All four of my Bilstein greens were refurbished by Bilstein a few years ago for about 400 squid.... took too feckin long to do though so best go thru Chris as he gets them delivered/collected direct from Bilstein UK.

In fact I think Mrs. Franklyn does the running around!

Ok lets clear this up so there is no confusion. This is a 964 cup shock and is what Melv should have (no idea what you actually have fitted) forget the top mounts in the pic but do take a close look at the damper piston and it's size. Yes these are green colour shocks too. They are single tube design and can be rebuilt.
