In the last 20 years of working on S2's I have found that what may look like a weak follower, is more likely a broken valve spring which as you push down on feels spongy like a weak follower..

Being 2 springs per valve, often the outer strong spring breaks leaving just the inner weak spring.. more often than not on cylinders 3 and 4 on the intake side.

It may be the lifters/followers, but check the springs

Now that is the sort of 'in-the-trade' information which mere enthusiasts simply don't have.

Thanks - awesome, I'll get them to check these on the three soft valve trains before they just replace all the followers.
