Bl**dy imobiliser

My newly aquired 924 has an unreliable immobiliser, and frankly the only thing it has immobilsed so far has been ME! [:mad:]

I'm going to have it removed, before it leaves me stranded somewhere ... can anyone recommend anywhere, preferrably in Fife or east coast who could be trusted to remove the damned thing without mucking up the rest of the electrics?

It should be easy to remove the immobiliser they normally are conected to 2 circuits in the car. Do you know where the immobiliser is in the car??. If so then all you have to do is to trace the wires and find out where the installer spliced into the cable. Remove the conection to the immobiliser and join the wires back together. Obvisouly the spliced wire goes through the immobiliser and then back into the other side of the cut wire. These wires will be the same colour so rejoining them together is very straight forward with some solder or even a connector block would work ok. If you can get the car over to the west i will do it for you

Thanks for the help. The immobiliser is called a Compact 1 (or perhaps a Compact 2) and is about 10 years old. It is just an immobiliser, no alarm or siren or anything, and that's the problem ... I have no idea what I'm looking for, nor can I see anything obvious, nor any obviously spliced wires.

Any idea what this device would look like? or where it would be installed?

I took mine out when I got my new car. It is normally under the dash close to the ignition switch. Mine was well taped up but once I got access it was a 10minute job to remove. Disconnect the battery first!
 
That would make sense as the sensor thingy is near the ignition switch. I'll go have a look next time I see some daylight!

This compact one/two was made by AUTOJACK it think (10 years is along time for my memory!!!!), anyway it is a 2 circuit imobiliser and is a black box abot 4-5 inches x about 3 inches it has the wiring harness comming out of it. It has a black resin covering up the circuit inside. The wires are not that long either so it is probably located under the dash or near the fuse box as this is the best place to make the connections.

Does the 924 have the wooden panel un der the carpet in the passenger foorwell? thats where mine is

 
Not had a chance to look at it yet ... been too busy catering for a houseload of guests over the New Year. At least I might have an idea what to look for now though, so thanks.

An update ... I finally found the black box that Tim mentioned, quite neatly installed above the throttle pedal, screwed to the underside of the bulkhead. There are 4 wires coming out, which are presumably the ones going to the wiring loom, but as yet I'm damned if I can see where they attach. Whoever put this in must have been an octopus, but at least a neat and tidy octopus. There is a further connection like a telephone jack plug, which I assume if going to the sensor unit.

It seesm to have been behaving itself recently, but I'll still be happier when I finally get it disconnected. I'll keep you posted.

Well done in finding the mysterious black box!!!. It must be a 1 curcuit type. The phone type cable will be the one which attaches to the sensor as you said (where you put you keyfob before you start car). The other wires will be

+12v
- 0v
1st circuit and the other side of the spliced circiut.

Wires will normally go to either the ignition switch relay/fuse box or the engine coil check in these places and i bet you will find what your looking for.

Have fun reaching in all those tight spaces and remember to buy elasterplast for all those cuts you will recieve from reaching under there[:mad:][:mad:][:mad:]

Many thanks, very useful info.

When immobilised, the ignition comes on (ie wipers work etc) but the starter motor wont turn, so I guess that must be one of the circuits affected.

so it will be the ignition starter relay that is not coming in it must be spliced there
check fuse/relay its there somewhere!!!![:mad:][:mad:][:mad:]

A further update. I finally today had the pesky device removed by Car Radio Services in Perth, for a very reasonable £24 plus VAT. They told me it had been quite well installed, and that they re-soldered all the joints when they removed it. They seem to have done a good job.

I may well remove this thread shortly though, as I'd rather my insurance company were not appraised of this, although why the hell they insist on these damned things I cannot imagine [:mad:]
