Blue Smoke !!!!

Car just had run of approx 90 miles - no issues. Stopped for approx 3 hrs. Then had short blast down the road...no issues...left to stand for approx 2 hrs. On start up loads of blue smoke......both exhausts.......settled down after approx 1 mile. Stopped and left to idle whilst had a check round blue smoke start again...less this time but defo blue smoke.....is this just a "quirk" (hopefully) or does this sound expensive !!!!????

Checked oil levels oil fine and "looks" fine......when left to idle and and accelerated loads of blue smoke intially howvever, this clears and car seems ok.....left it to stand now for any 10 mins and will try again...

If it goes away quickly, should be nothing to worry about. Think it happens with most 993's. The 993's I have had do this now and then. The best explanation I've ever had is oil collecting in the exchangers.

Looks a bit more serious...once cooled down went to start again.....nothing engine would not turn over at all.........pushed on to driveway then started saving !!!!!!!! Any ideas ....way aheads......this is going to be painful

Flat battery?

I sometimes get a puff, can last a minute or so if laid up for a week but always clears and slightly worse when oil level is 'high'...

If battery is fully charged and the engine won't turn that doesn't sound too good....if in the SE get to Northway ASAP!

I agree with other guys - occasional blue smoke on start up is normal, but not once it's been on a run. More info needed - when were oil and filters last changed and what used. Oil pressure on idle etc.

Further info - Oil pressure seemed fine on idle and rose to max on acceleration, filters etc changed approx 12 months ago, however old probably done around 1500 miles since last service. On the negative end if it is an engine sieze....gulp......how much (ish) am I looking at for an engine rebuild with an approved Indie? and what about considering other options e.g. engine upgrade/modification etc...If it does result in rebuild intention is to "bite the bullet" and get it completely sorted/modified even if this means it being off the road for a few months.

Many thanks for responses - My concerns are that the car was starting fine even though blue smoke was being emmitted from both exhausts and the smoke seemed to have cleared. However, I left the vehicle to stand for approx 10-15 mins before starting again to check if any blue smoke. The battery appeared fine pre-cool down (always on conditioner when left) all internal lights function correctly and alarm functioned correctly, but on turning the ignition nothing no noises or any movement within the engine. Any further advice much appreciated. Regards.

Hi,

Not sure that both problems are related. With the lights on dipped beam try and start the car whilst watching a reflection of the lights, they should dim appreciatively. If they don't no power is getting to the starter. Check the DME relay in the fuse box - common failure point for 993's, especially if it has a 964 part number. About £20 for a new one.

If the lights dim you may have a flat battery/failed starter or there is something seriously amiss in the engine

With the ignition off use a 19mm cranked spanner to turn the engine clockwise (only!). It should rotate fairly easily until it comes to the compression stroke at which point it will be harder to turn but with moderate force will still turn. If it's rock solid you may need to get the engine looked at by someone.

Hope it makes sense, let us know if you need anything further, hope we can help and that its not serious

Regards

Have you recently topped up your engine lube, has there been a history of high oil consumption, have you recently changed how you park the car, is it on fairly level ground , is there a camber where you park ? I think I would be hesitant about trying to start that car if I was not confident about the state of the motor, call in someone who can give you difinitive information on your car. Best of luck.

Again - many thanks for responses

Will try check the battery out and DME always (always have a spare!!!) and check the lights etc. Will also try the crank option.

Engine lube not recently topped up and no history of oil consumption (high). Car had been stood for approx 1 month but had completed 90 mile run in previous few hours, car had been on relatively flat ground. Will check over starter and get "professional" to take a look. Unfortunately car is south (Reading) and I am in Scotland for a couple of weeks (work)......and saving up!!!!

Will keep posting the "progress" !!!

Yes I'd echo the last comment - Ray Northway is the man to contact.

Many thanks - Have Porsche mechanic coming to diagnose Thursday - then start to save up - will keep you all posted !!

Result - Porsche not seized. Car would not turn over due to immobiliser locking out at the time - Running again, however still blue smoke. Any suggestions?

This may sound insane - What if i put diesel in ? ( I have 2 diesel cars!!!) I cant remeber at the moment and am rapidly looking for reciepts !!! How long would it run? Impact? Its probably not this though just an insane first thought!!!!!

Car being looked at as I type ... will keep posted !!!

Relax, the diesel nozzle would not fit the petrol filler tube. The diesel pump nozzle is large diameter, and therefore designed not to fit an unleaded car filler.

My other half recently put petrol in her new diesel Merc and drove it about two miles. Result was complete new fuel injection system, injection pump and injectors, lift pump, new tank, all in £7,000 worth of damage. Fortunately it was a lease car ....

[:D] Don't worry, the poor girl has suffered enough ribbing. Her excuse was the unleaded nozzle was coloured black, like the diesel.

Turns out, when you speak to people, most of us have done it at one time or another.

Err no, but my wife put U/L in the Landrover (defender) luckily it has a drain at the bottom of the tank! she only topped up with about 1/2 tank on top of 1/2 tank derv, and then drove about 60 miles !! "landrover's not going very well, bit noisey and smoking" , " have you put fuel in today ?" says I , "yes I put some in this morning", nose to filler, strong smell of petrol, drain tank, change fuel filter, suck it and see, been running fine for the four years since !!! phew!! women , I ask you[;)][;)]

After further diagnostics - still blue smoke on running so looks like an engine strip down an rebuild !!!

Possible causes?

1. Piston Rings?
2. Valve Seat?
3. Head Gasket?

Any further advice much appreciated. How much am i looking at for strip and rebuild? Anybody been through this any further recommends ? Should i do other jobs/upgrades etc whilst this going on? ?Going to bite the bullet on this one !!!!!
