Bottled it at 135MPH

I know the speed limit is 70MPH but early last Sunday morning thought I would see how well she goes.

Must be an age thing or fear factor but I bottled it at 135MPH on a clear straight road with hardly anyone on it.

If I could have had a car like this when I was 21 I would not have been happy till I had tested it flat out.

Has anyone who is brave enough taken there's any faster ?
 
155 German Autobahn in my mk1 Boxster S. Totally stable. 150 with the roof down!

Doesn't beat the 165 I did in a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti though. Definitely no more bottle after that I'm afraid.
 
As Richard 150 on the Autobahn.

Car was fine but it's very demanding on a two lane highway.

I couldn't possibly comment about UK excursions (not in public anyway).
 
Test Drive Plus, at Elvington, reached 155mph in a Boxster with less than 1K miles on the clock!
Absolutely rock steady.
No real impression of speed until the trees seemed to be getting nearer and nearer rather quickly!

Good old speeds on here!
I have managed to give mine any welly just yet!!!
Although the acceleration to 100mph is plenty quick enough for me!!

Can we keep all future talk of such speeds confined to those locations where it's legal please?

This is a forum where non-members can log in and see the posts - we don't want some newspaper deciding to look and see how fast the Porsche Club are boasting that they drive on UK roads...[&:]

An indicated 162 on the bowl at Millbrook proving ground.

I guess you can get used to such speeds in such a location (journalists and professional testers/instructors) but it was a whole new experience for me! The bowl is really quite bumpy.

Ho hum - 135 mph in the UK. Lucky Mr Plod is not monitoring this forum - although you were not under caution when you admitted this offence.

Seriously, if you get caught at that sort of speed you can look forward to losing your licence and heavily increased insurance premiums for soem time. Best to keep to a test track and/or an autobahn in Germany.
 
In my first boxster - about 140 at bruntigthorpe, 150 on autobahn with roof down - during the heatwave a few years back, was still too hot at 150+ so had to stop, roof up, air con on [:D]

In the GT3 momentarily 165+ on autobahn, would never do it again, you just approach the rest of the world waaaaayyy too quick, in hindsight I wouldn't do it again.

This boxster - not been out of the uk, so not a bean above 70 m'laud [;)]
 
I've been driving performance cars for donkey's years and if we're talking about speeds, I must say something which may be controversial: above 100mph, where legal, my 987 Boxster S's rear becomes lighter and does not inspire me with as much confidence as I would have expected from a Porsche. Interestingly, I recently read a car review in the mainstream mags which said the same thing. They must drive a lot of performance cars. From my own experience, a 911 (997 cab and 996), an M3 (conv), Audi RS4, and AMV8 did not feel like that, to name a few. Don't get me wrong, it's not a big deal to me and hasn't stopped me taking it to ~150mph where legal. I absolutely love the Boxster (2 years old now so plenty of time to explore it), but I have noted this quirk about my Box. Anyone have any views?

Yes, I forgot to mention I also owned a beautiful early 2.5 986 many years ago and that car too did not exhibit this quirk, as far as I remember.

I'm not an aerodynamicist, but the 'spoiler' on the Boxster is really an oversized gurney flap. A gurney flap typically disrupts trailing airflow to negate lift. Porsche had a small gurney strip on the Mk1 996GT3 which was claimed to have cancelled about 15kg of lift at speed. They found no need for a gurney strip on the Mk2/RS due to the more efficient spoilers, although they re-introduced the gurney strip on the 997GT3. A proper spoiler, a la GT3-style, generates proper downforce and needs to be aerodynamically efficient to minimise drag.
 
About 130 in my old 986 on the EVO triangle

fastest i've travelled in the UK was 172 - twice, once confirmed by video/vascar ? (in a turbo technics modified Carlton GSi3000, with a police high speed pursuit driver in charge and his mate in their normal 3 litre Senator disappearing quickly in the rear view mirror [:D]) and the other occassion in the right hand seat of an Alpina B8 4.6 (thats a V8 4.6 litre 3 series coupe!) - steering wheel was on the left and being driven by the salesman [&:][&:]
 
I did 155ish in my 2003 Boxster S. Must say that it felt fine I just started to catch up the traffic so had to slow down. Going to go for a full speed run soon, but am hoping to get it showing 160 on the clock. I know it can do it. My car is standard apart from the induction kit.
 
Done 170mph in a de-restricted BMW M3.......Fantastic aint got the bottle to take my Boxster over 120.
 
Interesting that matanzas, another 986 owner, has no concerns about high speed stability nor did Mark Bennett.
To Grant Burrows (g3gsb): is your Boxster 986 or 987 and is there any particular factor affecting your 'bottle' above 120 mph?
