Hi all
this month's 911 and Porsche World rumours a 3.4 engine for the UK in late Summer Andrew

Hi Andrew its all true my Porsche contact has been wetting my appetite by drip feeding me what info he comes by in the hope I might find 0-62mph in 0.01 seconds quicker irresistible :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: I got the impression it's coming for MY07 ie October 2006. Hope it still remains £5K cheaper than the Coxster

Question is, will it be a new model designation, e.g Boxster RS or will it simply be the new Boxster S. I'm awaiting delivery of a 987S in March and I specifically asked the dealer about the above rumour when I paid the rest of my deposit. No way said the dealer. Now if its the same price or more expensive than the cayman (as most porsche convertible models are) then I probably wouldn't spend an extra 10k on the car anyway.

If however its the new S then I'd be highly pi$$ed off as I've waited for 10 years to buy this one and if a new model becomes top dog within 6 months I'll be seriously hacked off.

It's just the first mods to the 987 model in keeping with Porsches historic evolution programme that has occured in every model ever made[&o] I am afraid your dealer has been economical with the truth. Ask him/her to give you a written undertaking that for MY07 the 987"S" will remain as is 3.2l and then watch the body language when he/she replies :ROFLMAO:[:)]

As for the 3.4 987"S" costing more than the Cayman "S" this won't prove to be the case IMO because Porsche has led everyone, including their sales people, to believe the Cayman is a totally stand alone model in its own right and therefore can't be compared to cheaper Boxster models. For once this piece of marketing hype suits me and my wallet just fine [;)]

makes sense to keep variations of the powerplant to a minimum, so why not put the 3.4 in the 987S as soon as the cayman hit manufacturing capacity?

I'll be as pi$$ed as the next man but you can't argue with evolution....if we did we wouldn't have 276bhp in the S now![:)]

OK I suppose it seems likely that even if the 3.4 was dropped in it would make 295 bhp, so only 15 bhp more. Plus the boxster 11kg heavier and only 0.1s slower to 60 than the Cayman, so the extra 200cm3 is not going to make much difference. Except if your in a marketing war with your competitors. Possibly better to wait for the Cayman to go to 315 and the boxster s to go to 305 and both to have the DSG (PDK) gear box, that would be a bit more of an upgrade. A 6% increase in displacement and 5% increase in power is always going to be a bit difficult to feel through your backside any way.

I suppose 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and a top speed 100mph greater than the speed limit in my country isn't too bad anyway.

No I cant believe it is so low.
My Slick 32 AMG has I think 345BHP and is only 3199cc.
Is a V6 so much better than a flat 6.

Rob
seems true then
the inference is that the 3.4 will be the new displacement for the S and the 2.7 will be increased in size to 2.8 or 3.0
what next[8|]
Andrew

I suppose to look at it another way, whats the dealer likely to offer me for a 6 month old £45k car, i.e. how much to upgrade?

I would not lose too much sleep over it.If you like the car you ordered stick with it.A few HP here or there does not really matter they are all too powerful when you think in speed camera terms. And despite the hype Porsches only seem to have high residuals when you P/X
Try selling one on the open market you will get a shock. The last Boxster change took a while to filter through in dealer terms.Enjoy what you ordered.

At the end of the day whether its 6, 9 or 12 months the model you buy will be superceeded due to the development of the model. In 6 months yours and mine (ive ordered a 987S for march) will no longer be 'new' cars anyway.[:D]

I'll just have to get a personalised plate so that when I upgrade to boxster 3.4 with PDK gearbox and PorscheIpodConnect after 6 months less people will realise just how sad I really am.
