Boxster 981 - Battery charger/conditioner - connection?

Picture of a 981 CS ... 981 GT4 is the same

The Frazerpart sourced item above has the M8 eyelets, if you purchase from CTEK they have the option of M6 & M8

Our 981 Spyder came with a "free" Porsche battery conditioner (Rebadged CTEK) - but in came with the 12v power plug to go into the internal socket. I am looking for an adapter(?) or even multiple converters to have a permanent connection (via spade connectors) on the battery and feed to cable in under the front avoiding all rubber seals.

I can find cables with the spade connectors and with a small connector to tuck under the front hood - but none that will take a 12v plug designed for the old cigarette lighter socket? Am I looking for the impossible or am I going to start cable cutting and build my own??

Thanks for any clues

Andrew
You need the CTEK connector that has the larger eyelets so that you can fit one side of the connection to the chassis point - either the wiper base or there is another point on the passenger side suspension turret that will take a bolt and do the same. Do not connect both sides directly to the battery or you bypass the little black box that controls the charging regime - all explained in the manual. None of the 12v sockets stay live in my Spyder - seems that at some point Porsche changed the software as some 981s work and others don’t.

I assumed that the battery charger would go direct to battery and that it would control the charging process - must read the manual!

But I still have the problem that the connector has a 2 pin plug on the end and the Porsche version of the Ctek has a 12v power plug designed for the in car socket? Time for a bit of build your own adapter?

Can you post a picture of what you have ?

My understanding is that you have a male aux socket on the output of your charger - that can be attached to the female ctek cig socket - that can be connected to the battery / chassis via the ctek / Fraserparts connector ?

Is this your charger - will connecting these three work for you ?

This looks like my charger and the image appears to have the connectors needed - is it M8 size? Where do you hide the female socket so as to get easy access?

The fused battery - chassis connector from Fraserparts has M8 terminals, picture shows where connector resides when not in use ... the bonnet has a recess in this area hence no interference

To use ... it has sufficient length to reach the trim aperture at the w/wiper - from there connect to the cig socket section - then to charger ... if you require more length Fraserparts can supply a 2.5m extension lead

So I can source the connector from the battery to the connector within the recess - I just need to find a cable to connect to that battery and to the female cig lighter socket - this is the one I have been unable to find.

The items in post 24 will do what want ... going left to right in the picture

1. Attach M8 ring terminals of fused connector lead to battery and n/s suspension turret, the other end of this is a female CTEK connector (incorporating a traffic light battery condition indicator)

2. Use the male CTEK connector of the CONNECT Cig socket lead to attach to the female CTEK connector above

3. Use the female socket of the CONNECT Cig socket to connect to your charger`s male adapter

4. Plug charger to mains

If you require additional length of cable then Fraserparts can provide a 2.5m CTEK connector male / female extension - this can go between the battery connector lead and the CONNECT Cig socket lead

I can source the M8 connectors to the ctek connector, it is the ctek to female 12v supply I seem unable to find on frazerpart website - the one you refer to as connect cig socket lead - where did you source yours?

Before you buy the adaptor try putting the Ctek into the socket in the passenger footwell, it has been mentioned before not sure if on here or PistonHeads but if you put the Ctek into the socket before you switch off the ignition then it does not cut out after the allotted time, I have tried this on my 718GT4 and it stays live.

Also if you speak to any OPC they will advise to fit to the positive battery terminal and an earth on the body. This is standard practice across most manufacturers, in fact on Mercedes and BMW they have specific earthing points.

I have bought a CTek charger with the cigar lighter attachment, unforunately the footwell cigar socket in my 718 disconnects after a 20 min period, so I can't leave it on trickle charge. I have had two different answers when trying to solve this, first I was told it can be reset to live permanently by diagnosis computer, now i'm told it can't be changed . Anyone know the correct answer please?

The post (or Reply) number is in the blue bar to the right - your last one was #36 and post #7 is on page 1.

Hope that helps.

The cigarette lighter socket in a 718 will stay live when a charger is connected. As long as the charger is connected to the mains and delivering a charge it continues to work. I have a 718;and it worked perfectly all through the winter. However if the power to the charger is interrupted (power cut, accidentally turned off then the socket will turn off. This means you can’t use a solar panel charger. Since you already have the charger you can see for yourself that it continues to work, plug it in and you can see through the window that the lights on the ctek that show that the charger is delivering a charge to the battery are still lit.

Post#7 The CTEK charger works well on my 718 and on my previous 981 via the cig lighter in the arm rest and has done so for the last 5 years. The trick is to have the ignition live to get power to both connection points before you connect the CTEK. So, drive car in garage (or on driveway), switch off ignition, and within 10 mins ( the manual says the cig lighter connection points remain live for up to 10 mins) connect the CTEK charger. The car then recognises the input power source from one of the car inputs and leaves this point live. Simples! Hope this helps.

Ha! For the last 13 years (5 years 987.2, 8 years 981) I've been using the footwell socket for my CTEK without any problem, just like in post #7. Just replaced my 2013 981 Boxster S with a 2016 Boxster S and guess what? - the footwell socket, the armrest socket and the glovebox socket all turn off after 20 mins. Mad. I'll have to resort to the fixed solution. Grr.
