Boxster Engine Rebuild Problems, problems, problems....

You could take the view that for the cost of new coils - and I have to say I don't know how much that might be - but if you end up with your new engine running sweet as a nut then it's worth it. On the other hand - if it makes no difference then you don't pay him - assuming he doesn't want cash in advance?
Also - did you ever get a definitive explanation as to what actually happened to the engine that required a complete rebuild?
 
The chances of a coil pack failing within a week of an engine rebuild ??

Coil packs are a lot more problematic in wet weather once the damp gets into the cracked cases etc. You might have one or two packs gone, but they normally light up the CEL light on the dash.

You really need to find out what exactly failed in the first place - lots of white smoke doesn't to me suggest you needed the level of rebuild that was done.
 
Sorry to say but I think the AOS has failed from the symptoms you have described, and as someone has stated in one of the above posts it should of cost no more than £500 to rectify.
 
Well thanks for your advice people - Thought I would update.

I have finally got the car back after TWO MONTHS! It seems to run better now but I gave it a good thrash on the way back and it ran fine but at one point on changing from third gear to fourth gear with some agressive acceleration it puffed out a huge amount of smoke. Never had this before. I couldn't get it to do it again and it seemed to carry on running fine but now I'm a bit worried again. It had been running for a good 30 mins and was warm so wouldn't expect this other than possibly at start up? Am I just being paranoid now?
 
As stated by others throughout this thread all the symptoms including the latest cloud of smoke point to the air oil seperator. If that hasn't been checked or replaced, DO IT. If a lot of oil suddenly finds its way into a cylinder and causes hydraulic lock, it could destroy the engine.

I have known a cloud of smoke to be emiitted when hitting the rev limiter. If you were "thrashing it" this may be the cause.
