In the article it mentions that the gen 1 key heads have two designs (both of which have a silver case). The earlier relied on the raised ribs to activate the functions, the later design used the flat / dished part of the the button instead. Its very simple to simply swap over the top cover from the later design onto an early key head and achieve the same result as filing down the buttons. There is also a repair kit from porsche listed for the button assembly specifically for the987/997 , this may also produce the same result. Spare key heads sell on e bay for around 30 pounds.
