I simply dont buy the "modding depresses 944 prices" line.
Then in my opinion you do not properly understand the market and the aspirations of a potential 944 buyer.
People see the Porsche 944 as a Porsche within their budget and trust the brand. Younger people are swept up in a (current) love of classics or "old skool" German engineering (and rightly so in my view) They all do a bit of research, have limited money and tend towards unmolested cars with a decent history. It`ll be a knowledgeable 944 owner upgrading or a serious petrol head that will buy heavily modded cars for a good price. Promax chips, MAF`s and DPW`s, KW blah blah will actually put people off because they dont understand that they enhance the car and arent aftermarket go faster goodies.
Modding cars will see very little return on any investment. The best anallurgy [spelling!] I can give is extending your semi to 6 bedrooms with swim pool in a street full of three bed semis. You`ll never get much more than the best un-extended one. Its called the market. Also why buy an old semi at top prices when a far newer, modern technology detached is around the corner for not much more money (read Boxster)

To a degree you're right, although there are plenty of people doing a lot of research who learn what mods are worth having (if not essential). Of course you don't get the money back, but then you wouldn't if you fully restored the car either. It doesn't take much research to see that the 6 bed detatched, or Boxster in your analogy, will cost a whole lot more to run, as well.
As always, only put a load of money into a car if you're keeping it. [8|]

Took the car for a drive today. First time for a good few weeks due to being busy. Cant bring myself to sell it now. Think I would be too sad to part with it.
Good man, you know it makes sense.[

I think there's a distinction to be made between modding and chavving up (although some on the more puritanical wing of the 944 community don't seem to be able to manage that). Yes prices can potentially be damaged if too many examples like the yellow peril find their way onto the market at least amongst those who covet the badge more than the machine. I would agree that there is a limited market for highly modded (not chavved) cars but I don't think anyone who has gone down that path is under any illusions as to that fact. I would also agree that the biggest downward pressure on 944 prices are the cheap early Boxsters that can now be picked up for a song. I suspect that those aspiring to Porsche ownership for the badge but unable to stretch to a 911 are far more likely to be looking to that market than the 944 one these days.
And no you dont get your money back from modifying but thats not the point in doing it.
Aside from that yellow abomination that crops up on ebay could someone point out a few 'Max Powered' 944's because I can't say I've noticed any???
There really aren't many though the occasional one does crop up on fleabay or Pistonheads from time to time. But would a serious potential owner really be looking there anyway in the bargain basement section and thus have their ever so delicate aspirations dashed ? I think not.
I think its great that some folk want to keep their pride and joys totally standard and its great that others enjoy giving them a tweak or two.
Oh and to the OP - great to hear that you are reconsidering.
The search continues......

As I said earlier, a modded car will appeal to a smaller audience - those in the know. It is true that you shouldn't expect your money back from mods, but people have to realise that to buy a car and mod it is more expensive than buying a car already modded - if not it is not then the car is overpriced. In the end those who don't want mods wont answer adverts for modded cars, but those who know their onions and recognise the world has moved on since the '80's and there are decent mods out there that will update the overall performance of your car and enhance your enjoyment will be drawn to decent and saught after mods. In almost all other cases decent mods enhance the value of cars: well modded 911's, jap stuff, Mercs and BMW's from recognised tuning houses all command significant premiums.
Not all potential 944 owners are in the market for a bargain basement Porsche. There are plenty of people out there who can afford much more expensive cars who are drawn to 944's for their merits. When I bought mine I targetted the upper end of the price range on purpose on the basis that it is often a false economy to go cheap, like a said before, the £2k you might save on the purchase price wont go very far if there is some work needing done.
