Brake disk wear

How many sets of brakes would you expect to go through before you need the disks replacing?

I have been told that my front brake disks will need to be replaced, probably at the next service. I have not yet gone through my first set of pads!! Is this normal

Depends on why they need replacing - are they cracked, or corroded or just worn out?
If just worn out, then I would have expected the discs to last for at least 2-3 sets of pads (just my feel, I do not have any data to back it up).
 
They have said that they only have .5mm left in the thickness before they need to be changed. These are the original disks and pads from new.

I am not supprised the pads need changing (48,000 miles) but I was supprised that the disks need it to. The other suprise was the rear pads needed doing at this service. I would of thought that the fronts would wear before the rears.

I replaced my front pads once and then discs and pads all round with EBC's and cross drilled disks from Porsche Shop at approx 48k.

You can save a pile of money by fitting them yourself.

My front Disks & pads were replaced at 36K I was told the same that the thickness tolerance had worn away.

Talking to a good friend of mine in the motor trade, he say's disks and pads should be replaced together, and it is a false aconomy to just replace the pads.(sometimes with vented and cross drilled disks cracks and corrosion can cause them to break up!!)

The materials of the pads are a lot more abrasive in modern cars so wear the disk as well as the pads.

But as JCB say's fit them yourself and save a load of cash, I did.

I may well be in a similar position and when I spoke to some aftermarket specialists (performance parts and car specialists not independents) they claimed that to do porsche brake and disc job you needed special tools to complete this... from what I am hearing here this ain't the case.

I've never attempted anything like this before is there anywhere i could get the idiots guide to changing the discs and pads? Also OPC are quoting £1200 + vat vs JZ Machtech £685 + vat. How much did you pay for the parts only from porsche shop? and do you have an URL?

Would welcome any advice as £800 is a lot of money in anyone's language.

Whaaaaat????

In my experience in a "normal" car you can expect to get through a set of pads every 12,000 miles average..... You can also expect to see the same discs on at 100,000miles.

Relate that to a porker and if you drive a bit aggressive you will see out a set of discs around 50k with pads every 6-12k.....

That would certainly seem to be the figure for discs returned on my car but with about double the pad life.

Well I don't drive like a looney on normal roads but the first two sets of pads and 48k miles included:

6 days on the IOM plus a Jerby trackday, Silverstone, Donnington, Castle Combe and Mondello Park track days.

If you don't want a recurrence of the problem:
1. drive/brake harder to keep the discs shiny
2. use the car regularly
3. make sure you take the car out after washing and heat the brakes up so they dry off.
IMHO, 40,000 miles for a set of Boxster discs is ok. They are quite cheap if you replace them yourself.
 
Yes - to prolong disc lfe its vital to drive the car after washing to remove surface oxidation - leaving the discs wet leads to pitting, and as you have found the handbrake pads clamp on !


At least you had the sense to go outside the OPC network - they would have charged you £1300 just for the brakes
 
After finding I had similar problems with the handbrake clamping on if left for a couple of days, I gave up using it when parking, preferring to leave the Tiptronic 'Park' position to hold the car (not a problem in the garage, obviously!). I only use the handbrake now for traffic lights or hill starts.

Hill starts in a tiptronic? How does that work? The tip will stop the car from rolling back so you shouldn't have the hand brake on whilst in gear
 
True, but it seems to me that if the Tiptronic system is having to do work in countering the gravity, it's using energy, getting hotter and generally is under pressure. If you put the handbrake on, it relieves that effort. That may be a simplistic approach, but I've always done it so it has become a habit!

my brakes are due to be done discs and pads,also doing handbrake shoes ,my car is six years old with 32k on it
