BRITCAR 24hr race this w'end, 2nd/3rd OCT 2010, Silverstone

The weather looked fine today so hopefully you had a good test. Did you have time to fit the front bumper :ROFLMAO:

Yes sunny most of the day but still took until mid-morning for a full dry line to appear. Just my luck I went out first on wets, so did not really have a good session to explore how the car felt. BUT testing was not fantastic overall once it was dry, a lot of niggly handling issues which were not resolved --- So, plan B came into action as I had prov booked Chris Franklin to do a night shift at his workshops. As I write the car is in Atherstone with him! -- geo probably finished about midnight then back to Silverstone for quali tomorrow morning! Me I am off to bed - really need it !

Well it's been tipping down all morning in Northampton so I imagine you have had to use the full wets for morning qualifying [:(] I'll be along for the pitlane walkabout at 6pm and night qualifying at 8pm. Local forecast is dry by then but I bet the track's still very damp - should be interesting [;)]

Went today - Mazda MX5 s were fun! Very VERY wet for the club race, so much so it was shortened.

Mike - hi (NB repeat of the post on 968 section) pictures look great -- up to your usual high standards thx ps. could not get the photobucket link to the other Britcar photos to work though -- is it me? Quick summary about our B24 race - these races are one amazing challenge. It was dominated by rain, we ran wets for 22 of the 24 hrs. This reduced the attrition rate of the entries quite dramatically and 52 of the 60 runners were classified - amazing (in 2008 probably half that number finished racing). We did actually qualify last as we had no desire to push the car - just get the drivers through. We finished 39th overall out of 60 starters and 15th out of 23 in our class -- not a great result but we covered 1436 miles at an average speed of almost exactly 60mph including stops. Car ran faultlessy but did have to be recovered once from Stowe when the driver had a minor spin and could not work out how to start the stalled engine!! Demisting was a major issue as racecars leak water which then evaporates inside the warm cabin. My first stint of almost 3 hrs was tough as I wrestled with poor visibility and ended up using a cleaning device on a stick whilst driving !! By the end of the stint my usual Porsche mechanic had taken out a 12v ceramic heater from my 968 and installed it in 3 minutes for the next driver. It worked well. It would be fair to say that as a team of drivers we were working around the handling characteristics of the car - great care was required in 2 areas. Firstly downshifts - revs needed to be matched to road speed or all sorts of twitching occured at the rear. Secondly as the tyres wore during each long stint and the fuel load decreased a tendency to oversteer started to make cornering tricky. I find I can drive around such things and that is probably one inevitable aspect of endurance racing but 1 of the drivers was less comfortable with it at that affected their lap times. That is all for now - tiredness is taking hold so off to bed !!

Thanks again, Paul, for the tickets and pass - despite the weather, it was a great event and I'm so glad I made the effort to brave the rain and return on the Sunday to see the finish. Porsche for next year's race? Do let us know your charity total [EDIT - its on the web page http://www.justgiving.com/Paul-Follett-2010-charity ]

What a fantastic atmosphere there was at this event. The grid walk made me quite nostalgic for when a lot of the race events were like this, and not the repulsive combination of corporate jollies/chavfest that most have become.

You should try Touring Cars - not a grid walk as such, but they have open pits for a good half hour and all the drivers are there signing autographs, often with little giveaways for the kids too. Not to mention the grid girls...

Great result Paul and thanks for the tickets as well as the tour round your garage during the race [:)] It's such a shame this event is not properly promoted as so few people know of it's existence. The atmosphere was still good with only a few thousand spectators and the level of access to the paddocks, pits and cars during the race is a true petrolheads dream. Roll on the next one

lots of photos here from Adrian who stayed with us for the whole race http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/adrian.stock/Silverstone24hr2010800X800Jpegs?feat=directlink
