Bu66er!

My goodness Simon -you are so RIGHT!! [;)] I'm glad somebody has been reading/listening to my ramblings, top of the class boy -I see you've got four gold stars already....[:D]

18" Pirelli rubber made for the DTM series in '92 readily available. Knock on effect was being able to replace only part of a damaged three piece wheel (try that now!!); quicker lap times and the ability to carry out more adjustments on the suspension.

Ollie, I had 18" 3 piece Rh (speedline copies) on mine when I bought the car 5 years ago.The steering was so heavy that it was unpleasent to drive. Mine is LHD. The car is so much nicer to drive on the Mags. I wonder if is possible to find an alternative wheel the same weight as the Magnesium?
Good luck!
Ps I think an rs without the mags would probably be worth 4 to 5 thousand less.
Jeff

Jeff, it is possible - the magic word is Dymag. Wheels are I believe lighter than the RS mags but you have to order several sets! Colin at 9m is investigating.

Hi Tony

Why do I have a nasty feeling the Dymags will be as expensive as the original Mag wheels ..... Do keep us posted, I am sure if there was a cost effective alternative to Mags several of us would be interested.

A general question - 7x17 (rather than 7.5x17) front wheels + 9x17 rear wheels seem to be more readily available with the right off sets for the RS (ET 55) - I think they come from 993s where people have gone to 18s. Has anyone tried them for road use and do they make much of a difference? I am guessing that with a slightly narrower front tyre it may lighten the steering too. May be a cost effective alternative - theya re usually Cup 2s which are not as nice as Cup 1s but there seem to be lots of good sets around.

Thanks

I'm interested in this answer also - I have a set of 996 17" wheels which are 7s and 9s with ET55 - I was considering having them painted black, putting my mich pilot cup sports on and using these wheels for the track and keeping the refurbed mags with newish pirelli asym/direc for the road.

What do you think??

J

Yoda,
Sadly your probably right - however Dymags would be new, originals I believe are all 'old' if you follow me - ie no longer manufactured. Will keep you posted - will also check out their 17's. With regard to the 7's & 9's for the road I don't see a problem.

Personally I used to have a set of Mille Miglia replicas of the original size - used them for a year or so even for sprints & had no problems - don't know why I got rid really, must have been hard up I think as they went to 9meister in exchange for some more performance!

UPDATE...

I have spoken to Autofarm this morning and they have confirmed that they have straightened the bent wheels in question and I will be running perfectly true mags again [:D]

I wonder if I will feel any difference (or realise that I have been fleeced out of a few quid).

If you run mags and track your car it may be worth getting them checked for peace of mind and preservation.

Now, do I get the BBS 18's anyway and put a set of perfect mags into storage?

How strange Ollie - I was just going to email you to see how you were getting on and you've updated - let me know when you get the car back.

[:D] You know it makes sense! Pocket? Money burning hole? I know tthe feeling well!!!

Are you guys talking about the Carbon Dymags that Parr Motorsport were demonstrating at the Brands Hatch Porsche Festival last year? If so give Parr a ring (no connection) they were literally as light as a feather, I believe you can specify aluminium or magnesium hubs.

Not done anything more about it Feroz. House move iminent and 968CS to repair so it's on the back burner at present, Colin did have a set of 17's but I think they've been sold.

I've seen the info on the carbon ones Bones is talking about - its something they've done for a while for bikes, cost is likely to be stellar!

Hi Feroz

I've just purchased a set of refurbished original Porsche 17" Cup 2 wheels as a second set for the RS. They are 7J front and 9J rear both with ET55 offset. I'm planning to use them for road and wet track use and will be fitting Dunlop SSR 225/45ZR17 fronts and 245/45ZR17 rears (purchased through Ollie's group buy from Mr. Tyre). I have Dunlop DZ02Gs on the mags for dry track use. Once I've had the new wheels on the car for a bit, I'll let you know how they feel.
