Buying a 944

I'm about to put my late model turbo up for sale, so feel free to PM me if you are interested in a well sorted car at the higher end of the price scale.

Lovely car...and with the best gearchange ever on a 944

Did a reg check & this is what I found

PCGB may well have marketed the 250bhp cars as SE (/ Special Equipment), although I do not believe that this is so. Porsche nomenclature was relatively strict then and the M758 car was a Turbo S (called Turbo Cup by Sonauto in France and Turbo SE by PCGB) and the 250bhp car which followed it was the 1989 944 Turbo. I believe that the updated 1990 turbocharged model was also called the 944 Turbo and that it certainly what they printed on the price lists.

It is possible that PCGB tinkered with the names in their marketing literature of course, and it is a matter of record that they used Turbo S brochures for the car that they renamed the SE in 1988...
 
Curiosity got the better of me so I went to see the black one in Luton!
1st ever go in a turbo, love the nothing nothing nothing then bam wheel spin :0) felt seriously quicker than 250!!
So I checked it over with a torch & a magnet body is good apart from I reckon sills will need doing one day (costly?) no other rust apart from a tiny bubble on the tailgate. Chassis is solid, bit of surface rust on rear beam. Engine/gearbox/Clutch work perfectly, real crisp changes, no tappet noise from cold & still feels tight. Reckon it'll need a rear set of tyres before next mot (8months time) oh & I'll have to tax it.

Steering was heavy (common?) & the red parking light stayed on/brakes felt crap (what's that about?)
Plenty of history & old mots backing up the 135k miles
I've agreed a price of £4950 with a a full tank & paid a £50 deposit just in case I get it.

Honestly, what do you think?
 
Sounds like it could be a good buy. There are many reasons why the brakes might feel crap but my guess is that it will be caused by the infamous "plate lift" which pinches the pads and prevents them from sliding properly. Budget for an overhaul of the calipers, check the discs and change the fluid and see if that i proves things.
 
Difficult to say much about the sills from your description but bear in mind lots of cars have had or will need sill replacement or work. The warning light could be the handbrake sensor alone (very simple) or if accompanied with another light (abs) then a little more troublesome to trouble shot.

Brakes could be plate lift as said but could also just be in need of a little work if the car has been standing around for ages.

You haven't paid a huge amount for a late (250bhp) car so be positive in this regard! Good luck with it. You won't find perfection when buying a 944 (usually) and certainly not at your price range so some work is expected.
 
Great, thanks for the advice guys, I wanted to buy a runner that would need a bit of work, best way to understand a car rather than buy a show queen. Expect many questions & asks for help in the future. Btw is there such a thing as a build thread on this forum?
 
From your description i say go for it! I would imagine any rust likely to become terminal would have at least been mentioned as an MOT advisory.

Hey it's £5k for a car that will embarrass expensive modern machinery whilst looking damn cool doing it, especially in the best colour combo.

There's a slim chance you'll regret it, however it's far more likely that you'll love it.
 
Agreed & pick it up tomorrow! Cannot wait, 1st Porsche & looking forward to putting it alongside my pals 72 911 rs (rep) for a good thraping :0)
