Buying a 944

It's not got much history, gear linkage has been done. No record of cambelt so that'll need doing. Reckons there's no rust, no tappet noises, 10 former keepers & it's a 220 bhp model. The bloke didn't sound like he knew much about them other than he had it on for too little & when it goes back on eBay it'll be for more than 5k. Is there much difference from the 250 model other than power on this late one?
 
If that is with reference to the black Turbo above, then the seller is talking rubbish. It has been up for sale for ages at £6k on ebay and AT, then 5495 now £5000 - so why would he decide to put it up for more again now? Unless he thinks the low price is putting people off, but I'd say it's just sales patter. Also, if it's a 1990 car it should be a 250bhp.car, not a 220bhp one.

It's complete sales patter, he says it's going back on in 2 days with more info (which he didnt have so that'll be interesting!) & more photos.
 
So it's definitely a 250 then? Strange oh well, think I'm going to have a look this weekend if I have time. Anything in particular that looks out of sorts with it, stuff to look for when history is limited? Could be a bargain or just a massive heap of turd!!!

Reg check brings out some rubbish. According to these checks a Turbo S makes 220BHP as do the end of line Turbos (all of which were 250 cars). Almost all Turbos I have checked via the reg check come back as 220s.
 
Just have a thorough look over the car and ignore anything the seller says by the sounds of things. Have a good look at the sills, front wing bottoms and rear quarter bottoms for rust, take a torch and have a look at the inner sills via the vents in the B pillar/door shuts (remove the vents). General checks around the car, funny noises, vibrations, electrics working (check sunroof operation), etc - check for smoke, oil colour/condition, etc - usual stuff. Also have a good look at the paperwork, looking for good recent history. When were the belts last replaced, has the clutch/engine mounts/fuel or brake lines been replaced? If you can get the MOT test centre number from an MOT, check the MOT history online. Might even find a local, knowledgable member to give you a look?
 
Didn't know you could check previous mots, that's bloody genius, thanks. It's in Luton sort of area, anyone from round those parts. I'm new & obviously don't know anyone ha ha. The bloke tells me there's pretty much no history & no evidence of a recent cambelt being done, so I'd get that done straight away to be safe. What'll that set me back?
 
Free :). A chap local to Luton and a frequent visitor on the Retro Rides and TIPEC site was offering to do the 'belts and tensioners for £300 although I am not sure how considering how much the kit costs, but many seem happy with his work (RS Sportcars of Milton Keynes). I believe around £450, maybe a little more is around the going rate, although it is something I shall be researching soon.
 
Yeah I'd heard someone saying the 3-450 mark. Well if anyone is around those parts at the weekend & is willing to come with me that would bloody marvelous. Pm me phone no :0) Thanks for advice peeps, the search will of course continue!!!!

That's how all car sellers operate isn't it? Normally they offer you far less than even what it is worth!
 
No such thing as a 90 220 model they finished in 87, input error !

Correct, quick checks are M44/51 (220) engine number, and M44/52 (250) easy to view on the o/s of the engine block at the back (near the bulkhead) Early / Late offset Wheels / hubs (deep dish = 220) Non ABS brakes = 220 '90 car had "unleaded fuel" on dash or has it been re-shelled with an '87 shell? odd info
