Buying and importing car from Germany

MOT tester admitted that with the panels under a 964 they can't see much anyway!! His view was that I wouldn't be driving it if it wasn't safe.
 
The only point I remember about bringing the car back and trying to register it here was that you'll need to keep your bills to prove that you PERSONALLY imported it. i.e hotel invoices, train, plane,fuel etc. otherwise I think they can charge tax.

Incidentally I've had mine for 5 years and never had a problem with the KPH speedo....and on previous cars I 've just stuck some mph didgets on the outside of the glass...no sweat really.......

Your mot tester's name ain't Stevie is it[:D] Actually there is little worth checking under the panels, all the more safety oriented stuff is all accessable wishbones/bushes steering rack outer parts and gaiters, hubs bearings, rear supsension pick up points etc all perfectly visiable. Minor exceptions i suppose are brake and hydraulic lines (which "should" be ok due to the covers and the inner driveshaft gaiters which sometimes are'nt so ok).
My own PERSONAL point of view with the speedo may well be different to what I would openly recommend on the forum, as someone will one day come back on here blaming me for telling them it was alright to leave your kph speedo in when they have had hassles with Plod or perhaps worse still when trying to make a claim.

Thats why you need to sign a declaration to say that the Speedo has been changed or modified to also read in MPH. When you register the car you send in the MoT, the declaration, original countries registration papers (and Certificate of Conformity if younger than 10 years old), VAT414 and now also they have started asking for a garage invoice to prove the Speedo has actually had something done to it.

All MoT stations will pass the car with a kph speedo it's not down to luck. There is no tax to pay if you don't produce personal receipts for crossings and hotel, etc. The reason you don't have to pay any tax when you register the car is because you have to sign a VAT414 which declares that the car is a used vehicle previously sold within the EC and has already had VAT paid. You will need to state which country this was.

Thank you I am clearer about the speedo finally. Speaking to the chap at VCA, I had the impression MPH reading was a requirement for MOT but I must have interpreted it differently (I'm sure the guys at VCA won't say "By the way your speedo in KMH will pass the MOT").
