C4 ABS Unit

Scamper

New member
Hi all,

Just got a call from the garage and they have advised that (after trying everything else) my ABS/PDAS fault is most likely due to the ABS control unit being knackered.

As these units are like rocking horse poo or hens teeth to source used, does anyone know of a company (in the UK) that can repair the units?? its most probably a dry joint or a resistor has died so I would rather repair than buy new - £2k

Nooo - a 993 is different. You cannot use the 993 abs for the C4, the C4 needs abs and the 4wd as fitted.

If a C4 abs/4wd ecu is gone you have 4 choices:

1. spend 2 k on a new porsche one

2. spend 1.2k on the same bosch part if you can still buy direct (porsche are changing their spares policy and stopping 3rd parties selling direct but you may still be able to source one).

3. look on ebay etc - there is a claimed working one for euro900 or so on there. Else try a breaker - van zweeden or los angles dismantlers

4. my recommendation - contact BBA Reman (http://www.bba-reman.com/) and get a re-manufactured one for around 600. Heard once the unit did not work and was re-repaired but other cases I know are fine.

Good Luck!

Thanks Alex, I have a few quotes from a couple of companies who can repair/refurb the unit - £150 to £250 are the figures at the moment.

As soon as I know for sure I will get the unit fixed and let you know how it went...

I am surprised this hasnt been raised/posted before on here as this seems to be a "common" problem for these cars at this age. Someone must have had this repair carried out..

Hmmm - £150-£250 is a great price - certainly less then anything I have seen.

Once you get this done etc - it would be good for a write-up in PPost. Would you be able to do this. As you say not an uncommon problem....and I suspect one that will grow as the units get older.

All the best!

PS pls make sure the folks you are dealing with know it is a 964 C4 unit ie abs & awd controls.

Well the ECU swap out was completed today and it has been confirmed that mine is a dud! The other ECU (from a known good car) worked perfectly with no alarms, gongs, etc.

So when I pick the car up tomorrow I will get the ECU out, have one final fiddle with the connectors, etc before I send it off to be tested and hopefully refurbished.
Alex - I will let you know how it goes and send in a write up if they fix the problem.

An update on this ongoing saga...

I have sent the ecu to three companies with the following results;

BBA-reman - couldnt fix the unit, sent back no charge

Autoteknics - couldnt fix, possibly voltage unit fried/unit spiked, test + p&p charge - but would sell me another unit for £860 plus keep my old unit "for spares". Only offering a 90 day guarantee so obviously scrap yard sourced.

ES Alternators - couldnt fix it, unit would not power up, p&p charge only.

SO the current situation is I have dud ABS ECU that cant be repaired and at the moment i am unable to find another second hand. e-bay doesnt have any and I have also searched the foreign versions without luck.

I have had a reply from a salvage yard in California who have one for $1450.....but I am a bit reluctant to get one from there (unless I get really, really desparate!!)

I can still drive the car but obviously the 4wd and abs functions arent working.

Its a bit annoying really as these units are fairly expensive and there must be someone out there that can fix them no matter what the fault may be...

Is there anyone out there who has a wiring diagram for the unit as that may be useful for identifying parts and possibly allow for the replacement of key components if they can be sourced???

If anyone has a spare non-working C4 ABS ecu they would like to sell to me please pm me..
