C4S Muffler protection?

Hi Team

I have recently picked up a nice 911 C4S in Speed Yellow and looking to restore it to its former glory, one thing is puzzling me slightly, there doesn't seem to be any protection for the exhaust back boxes from the rear wheels, I was wondering if there had been a piece of the rear heat shield missing on both sides? I can see the coil pack protection cover and back mufflers, am I missing something? I have attached a picture, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Thanks buddy, probably explains why the back boxes are so corroded on the car, think ill make up a vented protection plate,

Cheers

Mike

Hi mike glad you bought a great car. Mine are the same but my mufflers have been upgraded with dansk s/steel

Hey thanks for that, will look at getting them upgraded to S/S as a matter of course, I have the sports option on my 911, will that make a difference to the type of back box I choose?

Cheers
Mike

I'll be honest I'm not to sure I wouldn't of thought so but Richard will be along soon when he see s your post he's a man who can

Hi Mike.
Welcome to 996 ownership, there are not many C4s around in speed yellow it's a great colour.
As others have said it's as it should be. I hope is just a tidy up and not in need of restoration! have fun and enjoy.

Yep it's a love or hate colour, wanted it as soon as I seen it, the car is in great condition and just needs a small amount of tlc to make bang on, have just got the wheels re-coated in Matt black and the callipers done professionaly in speed yellow cw painted Porsche decal, so it's taking time but enjoying the whole process,

Thanks again guys

Mike

Ah Chris, your the first to notice this, wish I had something to compare it too, even the drawings of the liners at Porsche are hard to tell.

Cheers

Mike

I recently removed liners, cleaned, rust-proofed the rear wells and yours looks no different to mine (except the fatter rear, that is). I suggest you remove the front liners in these wells whilst you're there, because you will find a moist pad of dirt just waiting to rot sill box section. Sports exhaust as in switchable? Then you will need to delete that option or replace with OEM. I believe these are more expensive than many aftermarket options.
Speed yellow is a great colour though :)

Thanks Chris, it still is a bit unclear, was gonna get a look on Utube to see if anyone is posting a task ie shocker change to get a look at another inner arch before ordering anything,

Cheers again

Mike

Tony
Thanks for the valued advice, will do exactly that, the rear boxes are just heavily corroded round the edging seams, will actually look at what I can do to improve the look of them,

Cheers again,

Mike

Yes it does Chris, but that's how they are.
Item 9 in your diagram link is the rear arch liner fitted in front of the rear wheel.
your Cayman may differ.

Looks normal to me too. The original silencers are stainless steel, but they go crusty at the seams, where the welding reduces the stainless properties.

You say they are 'sports' exhausts. Do you mean the IXLF option switchable Porsche Sports Exhaust system? If so, I would try to tidy them up and preserve them, as it is a worthwhile and desireable option. If they are not, then you can't go far wrong with the Dansk Sport Mufflers. (The Super Sports are a bit loud and intrusive, I'm told).

Just looks like something is missing!.

Every day is (still) a school day.....

Richard

Thanks for clearing it up for me, the system is the IXLF option and the boxes are exactly like you said, will have them re-crimped and welded, not to mention detailing the inner arches,

thanks again

Mike

Chris

Thats exactly what I thought, it's all a bit wide open down there but I guess these cars have been getting made for such a long time that they are almost perfect lol

cheers again

Mike

I have to admit I thought something was missing on mine when I first bought it. I would be careful, if you decided to fabricate your own liner. There could be good reasons why Porsche left it that way.
