C4S V Turbo

ORIGINAL: Wills I would imagine an extra 125bhp thrusting you down the road! [:D] Congrats and enjoy!
It's not the extra BHP that does it, it's the huge jump in torque!! The turbo slingshot is VERY addictive! TIP: when overtaking something, don't bury the throttle until you are in the overtaking lane (ie. the steering wheel is straight). Otherwise you will end up in the back of the car in front or the hedge!

As stated in a previous thread im picking up an 08 Turbo(manual) in 2 weeks , having owned a 06 C4S manual and never driven a turbo just wanted to know what too expect?
Can you guys advise?

Thanks AL

I went from 996 C4S to 997 Gen 1 Turbo (both with manual gearboxes). The Turbo is extremely docile/smooth and drives like the 996 C4S below 3000 rpm- pootles along in 6th at 30mph quite happily. However, when required, the Turbo has a 'Jekyll & Hyde' 'Jump to light speed' character change when provoked, especially with the Sport Chrono mode engaged. So it's really easy and comfortable to cover vast distances when required, or have fun, depending on which side of its character you want to exploit. You can really appreciate how much work and evolution has gone into the 911 Turbo over the various models. You've got the PASM 'sport' mode to experiment with, to try to get a feel of what the GT3 could be like. You'll get into lots of conversations with the more hard core enthusiasts who prefer the GT3/GT3RS. We recently worked out that the best solution would be to have a fully loaded 997 Gen II Turbo S for long drives and a 997 GT3/GT3RS for blasting about in......................... Anyway, have fun (carefully). My advice would be to try to find a circuit or go to Silverstone to take one of the Porsche Sport Driving School courses: http://www.porsche.com/silverstone/en/experience-overview/experience-porschedrivingexperience/courses-psds-overview/ If you buy a new Turbo the cost of a driving experience at Silverstone is included in the price. It's a very sensible way to learn about and explore the capabilities of the car. Andy L-T

This is my first Porsche and I still find it stunningly fast - and addictive! I'm sure that we all know how much Jeremy Clarkson dislikes Porsches but he had this to say in The Times when he tested a Gen1 997tt in 2006 - " If I’d made it, I’d have called it the Porsche Jesus Christ Almighty Would You Look At That B*****d Go." He went on to describe the sensations like this: "..this car doesn’t accelerate. It teleports. Bang, and you’re in the next space and time continuum." "In the real world nothing could hang on to the tail of a Turbo. Nothing." Whether you like Jezza or not, these descriptions seem pretty accurate from my (almost) 3 years of ownership - damn that time has gone as fast as the Turbo! Just follow Alex L's advice about when to bury the throttle when overtaking and your grin will be so wide the top of your head may fall off!

As above![:D] And when you've done with that one the Gen 2 is even better.......![;)] We did D-Day beaches - Calais - Folkestone - Tavistock (around 500 miles) from 1400 to 2300 in one day and got home feeling like we had just been down to the shops! Intrigued as to why you didn't try before you bought though?

15mpg when being persued by 2 other 911 turbos !! All that power has to come from somewhere [:D] Like Jason Plato said "if you love cars...you are going to LOVE this !".
[:D]..............some of those sections on the way back today where mental ................ [:D] [:D] [:D] .............. Fantastic fun though !!!

Al I changed in January from a 997 C2S Cab to a Turbo (after a little persuasion from some members) and while I miss the fresh air and the sports exhaust on the Cab the Turbo is just awesome and probably the perfect all round sports car, driving a Turbo is an experience every petrolhead should try sometime in their life. As Alex says the torque is unbelieveable and when you floor the accelerator you will always feel that uncontrolable smile, a very different experience to a non turbo 997 in the way it delivers. I love the manual gearbox on mine but you have to be careful as hitting the rev limiter particularly in 2nd is so easy this car is very quick and yet can be as docile as your average saloon and at slow speeds anyone can drive it. I agree with TS Captain when we did the Normandy trip I covered 1500 miles in 2.5 days coming back along the french motorways at speed in true GT fashion and yet on some of the rural roads the car drove like a true sportscar and at the end of the weekend not an ache anywhere. To me its the perfect everyday supercar and yes I'm smitten. ENJOY. Geoff. ps Porsche could do with sorting a sports exhaust as the sound should match the performance !

Believe me, when you are behind the Turbo it does make a great noise, many people have said the same to me.. However I don't think we get to appreciate it in the actual car.. True the sports exhaust is louder and more 'Porsche' sounding, but the Turbo isn't muted from the rear.... I Knew I had two in front of me today for sure [;)] In answer to the AL , it is the endless Torque that I think you will find the major difference.. I don't think you'll find it to actually feel that much quicker than your previous C4S- well not until you do get chance to look at the speedo.[;)] I'd possibly make you aware that the Turbo does have the grunt to actually push the car through the front wheels, where I believe the C4S will continue to grip firmly... Its all in the right foot and easily avoided... I may have described it wrong but you'll get the idea..[:)] garyw

Thank Geoff, the more I hear the more its dragging till I get home as im stuck abroad at the mo. Regarding the exhausts , is there not a good aftermarket system to rival the normally assperated porsche sports system? Thanks AL

ORIGINAL: zen4590 .. Also, sound a bit "rattly" on tick-over if you ask me (not just mine...heard many now and all sound same).
Blimey "rattly", have you stood next to a GT3 recently?[:D] Al, there are aftermarket loud exhausts if you're willing to pay up! Here for one..... http://www.parr-uk.co.uk/porsche-performance/parr-performance-parts/cargraphic-parr-performance-parts-01.asp [:)]

I don't think that quality has anything to do with it. There have been discussions on this forum that suggest even something as innocuous as a hardwired speed camera indicator device has prevented an OPC issuing an extended warranty so I feel sure that a non-standard major part such as the exhaust system will also debar you from the Porsche extended warranty scheme. If it doesn't, I will be checking my bank account and researching the suppliers because I do agree that the sound of the turbo, at least from the driver's perspective, is very muted and I would like a little sportier exhaust note. I recall that, when the 997 turbo was first available, Fifth Gear disliked the sound of the car, describing it as sounding like an angry Dyson. However, despite my wish for a throaty exhaust note, my kids have complained that, when I reverse the Porsche into my integral garage, it makes the whole house reverberate!

ORIGINAL: clarkes As always with these things, a non-standard exhaust will mean no Porsche warranty - damn!
Yup bye bye extended warranty possibility, hello sports car sound....

If the warranty has been extended wouldnt it be an idea to fit aftermarket and should you need warranty work done just replace with old temporarily. I am gonna purchase an aftermarket, does anyone have any idea which product is closest to the sports exhaust from Porsche? Cheers AL

Only 2 to consider in my book. Cargraphic (sound most like a Porsche) or Tubi (sounds most like a race car)

There's nothing stopping you from doing this.. unless a fault occurs and its recovered to the dealership...! []
