C4S V Turbo

ORIGINAL: zen4590
ps Porsche could do with sorting a sports exhaust as the sound should match the performance !
So agree I went from a Ferrari 430 to Turbo and it AMG this thing flies, but O just wish it sounded a bit more special, otherwise love it and cant wait for my GEN 3 car

Absolutely certain there won't be a gen 3 Turbo! Next one out is the 991 Turbo approx 2013

Sorry nick name, 998 I thought, anyway 991, I was led to understand might be end 2012, hope so as I have a deposit down (£3K)

Interesting reading all the positives about the turbo, your enthusiasm is great! I know the original thread compared a C4S v turbo and whilst not doubting the engine, I could not get the 4wd handling of the turbo. Have any of you gone from 2wd, because I could not warm to the turbo handling - which is more about the drivetrain than the motor. Now on my second 997,C2S Gen 2 from a Gen 1 - be interested to hear your thoughts cheers Darren

I wonder if you could be a bit more specific about what you did not "get" about the handling Darren? My experience of the Gen 1 997 turbo is very limited but the Gen 2 handling is very similar to my Gen 2 C2S thanks to all the tweaking of the 4WD system and PTV, dynamic mounts etc. For the most part I'm not aware that it is a 4WD car except for using launch when all four wheels rip up the tarmac![;)] Certainly those who are much more skilled than me say the Gen 2 turbo handling is improved over it's predecessor. Now all we need to do is lose 200kgs..............[:D]

For me under heavy breaking and turn in the front did not have the same level of communication with the steering wheel, feeling heavy, and not as responsive as a 2 rear wd car. The front end would have a tendency to understeer more when applying the throttle out of a corner, the remedy being to wait longer before getter back on the throttle. In comparison the 2rwd seemed more 'pointy', probably because of the greater ability to steer on the throttle, with the front end not pulling the nose of the car around (as 4wd did) particularly when in oversteer, (which was more difficult to induce in 4wd). I guess my tendency for the feel of 2rwd has been developed as a result of having a caterham for many years. Maybe explains why I like the GT3RS so much, - drives like a big caterham, but too extreme for me to use on daily basis. Hence sticky with C2S. One day I'll do away with the stick too and go to paddles - not just yet tho! Hope that explains. cheers darren

Yes Darren, good explanation. I think on the Gen 2 turbos the tweaking of the 4WD software and, more importantly, PTV have taken away nearly all of the understeer tendencies. On my half day at Silverstone we tried very (and I mean VERY) hard to induce understeer without any great degree of success I'm pleased to say. Probably get through the rear pads more quickly though! If you drive it properly the PTV doesn't do much but is a great "get out of jail free" card to stop understeering off the road when you go too fast and too deep. [;)]

First lap round the track for me, I nearly ended up in the hospitality suite. [:(] [&:] Then remembered I wasn't in the fezza and drove with a little more decorum. As it goes - "You can't overcome the laws of physics!" But Gen 2 TT does come close. [;)] Regards, Clive

Didn't they tell you that was the one without the PTV then Clive?[:D]

You need to keep working at it! [;)] [:D] Regards, Clive

ORIGINAL: madall As stated in a previous thread im picking up an 08 Turbo(manual) in 2 weeks , having owned a 06 C4S manual and never driven a turbo just wanted to know what too expect? Can you guys advise? Thanks AL
I did the same switch and whilst I though my C4S was brilliant (still do!) The Turbo is the ultimate road machine. Sure The GT3 RS's hassle me a bit on the smaller tracks but on the straights the Turbo is awesome. On the road the Turbo is so much more comfortable. The exhaust is different (unique?) and I had not appreciated it until recentl when I allowed a trusted Porsche owner and technician to run it around a track a couple of times while I stood at the pit wall to listen. I was not disappointed although some erk suggested it sounded like a Hoover or a Dyson!. Plus the Turbo is an everyday car, commutes every day several miles at our loal speed limits (40mph and downwards) with no problems then pulls 140+ on a decent track and higher on the German autobahns where permitted. You will love it particularly if you have only one car. Talking of noise rather than exhausts the whine of the supercharger on the JAG XKR is also amazing, quite evocative even though subdued. It is almost a sin to pass it because it sounds so good!
