We attended CAT. Driver training yesterday - very enjoyable day - rained in the morning which added to the challenge and dried up in the afternoon for the Subaru/Caterham shoot out . 6 of us in the photo 4 club members plus BMW and a Nissan GTR- and we had two instructors Paul and Colin Hoad - ably supported by Jo Hoad.
-Mix of work on the mile straight with threshold breaking
-I enjoyed the work on the 2 mile high speed bowl Woking through speeds in the pouring rain up the banking to the the top 5 th and highest lane where you work on compliance steering and minimum input --drive to a speed where ( specific to the Porsches) the component/ suspension mounts and bushes system start to move the car around then 10 mph faster the rear mounted engine can be felt moving differently - the idea is to sense this get comfortable with it! and lastly the aero apparently moves forward and you feel the car suck down again - at this point you are at 130 mph plus in the rain , on the top of a banked track against the Armco.Interesting!!
Then the handling circuit which was concrete and wet and I managed to approach the last corner too fast after a couple of laps for the degree of tighten after the apex and ended up travelling the wrong way at pretty high speed ! A bit sobering as I've never lost the GTS before even in a minor way on road or on several track days PSM was on!
Then alpine route which was challenging with hairpins and then the skid pan area with PSM off and finally a timed shoot out with a choice of catheram or Subaru (Stuart picked up the honours here after launching the Subaru off the line and later commenting it was faster accelerating in 1 st and 2 nd than his DMS tuned 997 turbo !!)
- I learnt a lot and probably learnt most how much I still have to learn - for me braking ( I apparently brake with correct pressure but too late and a little too short duration ) at the limit of grip and then getting straight back on the power to move to maximum lateral grip is the area to concentrate on
- some feedback on the day that the guys wanted more time driving as with 2 instructors we had to wait turns - but personally after a 13 hour day with drive to and from circuit I had enough input with a lot to think about and work on
