Cayman 2.7 5 speed manual, 31,700 miles. "Depress clutch starting"

Good morning,

Help on annoying occasional fault - on turning key no starter engagement, get an oil level read out followed by "depress clutch" message even though it is. Does start on repeating.

Is this a sensor problem, an adjustment? Can anyone say they've experienced it please?

It is a reasonably common issue. There is a clutch interlock switch on the clutch pedal which is prone to failure. Item 16 on the attachment. They are about £30+VAT from Porsche. DIY-able, depending on your skill level and flexibilty as they are awkward to get to.

 
Thanks for helpful reply. I am advised by Porsche that item 16 is for 6 speed box, and item 17 for the 5 speed which we need.

Sorry, but they are wrong. Item 17 is a separate clutch switch, which is used for cruise control, amongst others. Hopefully the attached will be large enough to show that item 16 is for both 5 and 6-speed. The latest part number is 997 613 109 50.

 
Porsche Chester adamant, having to order both and return one. Attempting a photograph to be certain. Is there a "workaround" while it's intermittent until we can replace? Remain grateful for your input.

Thanks for sending that over. Just to confirm, is your car a 5 or 6 speed as the part you are looking at is for a 6 speed car. The 5 speed have the item highlighted below no 17.

In my experience unfortunately the simplest work-around is to keep depressing the clutch until finally it works! Unless of course you want to clamber in and short-out the switch … if you want to second guess which switch it is. [;)]

This used to be a common problem on the 987s in particular (it happened on my 987.2 CS about 10-years ago) but Porsche introduced a revised switch back then which appeared to fix the problem.

As Jeff says, you can bridge the switch. The two switches look very different. Here is a photo (courtesy of RennTech) showing the switches, albeit on a LHD car. In this case, the fellow cable-tied the switch lever, so he didn't have to depress the clutch pedal to start the engine. Google 'Porsche 987 Clutch Interlock Switch', and you'll see just how common it is.

 
Very grateful for input, very helpful. Still waiting to get a final decision. Picture attached to confirm?? taken with great difficulty, let alone changing the thing!

Interesting temporary work around solution to attach the two cable ends across a bladed fuse? Not tried it yet!

If it's any consolation I had two of these changed under warranty on my Gen 2 987. Generally they usually didn't throw the "depress clutch" message so the OPC initially refused to believe that they were the problem, which was a pain, especially for the second one. The second one was replaced with a different part number which seemed to survive OK.

 
Yes I agree, just getting a picture awkward. I had a picture and the part no you gave from "911 Porsche" in London. Porsche Chester now agree with you! Picking one up tomorrow if I can get out of the garage!

Hi, returning to the clutch switch, fitted new part, no contact between spring on the switch and the pedal. We are wondering if there is something on the pedal, that is missing, that ensures contact? Or just bend the spring.

Meanwhile, we have isolated the box to go round the problem and starting is as normal without clutch depression, a much better solution?
