Cayman 718 GTS 4.0 - fuel gauge error

On starting my car this morning, it displayed an error in the MFD something along the lines of "Fuel Gauge error – contact your service provider” and the gauge read zero. This eventually rectified itself after about 10 minutes and everything returned to normal.

Has anyone else had this problem ?

Hi David,

Sometimes these glitches can be rectified by turning off the ignition and then turning it back on, but if the problem persists your best course of action is to get your dealer to run some diagnostics to see if any error codes are flagged-up.

Are you running at low fuel level? If so it may be a good idea to fill the tank and see if the problem returns.

The tank was completely full when the problem occurred. Perhaps the cold temperatures caused the problem. If it reoccurs (which it probably will) I'll definitely take it to the dealer.

Maybe you overfilled the tank David, and the level sensor system got confused! 😀

Best just to keep a watching brief, and as you say refer the problem to your supplying dealer if it reoccurs.

Apart from that annoying glitch, I hope that you’re enjoying your new car.

Out of interest and a long shot, but was the car full of E10 fuel and been standing around for a time, i.e. not used daily?

Given the unusually very low temps we have had recently, E10 has been known to freeze in cold temps especially if the car is not used regularly, allowing the fuel to build up condensation/water content.

I know this topic was raised in the media recently as the UK never used to go below -3c in the past, but now we are seeing temps like -8c in some parts.

The car was full of RON97 and had been unused for 36 hours approx. So maybe caused by what you say. Interestingly before I started it this morning the MyPorsche app was showing 0 miles as the available range. The app then started showing the correct range but now has gone back to 0 miles so I wonder if I'll see the same error on the car when I start it later.

Your MyPorsche app issue is one of many that I suffered when I got my current car. After much back and forth including two Porsche Germany specified PIWIS interrogations it was concluded the issue was "intermittent connections"

I would not worry about MyPorsche app reporting inconsistent data - it really is a case of "they all do that Sir!"

 
I had a similar problem with my 981S. The wiring harness that serves the fuel level sender unit was changed under warranty. Not had a recurrence since.

 
Hello

Does anyone have any experience removing zunsport front mesh grills from a Cayman GTS. I am about to fit them but don’t want to “commit” by snapping them into place until I’m sure they can easily be removed prior to Porsche inspections.

Yep. I've taken mine off. They are pretty robust as long as you don't go at it like a bull in a china shop and the tabs don't need bending too much to get them off.

TBH, most OPCs aren't bothered by them and think they should be a standard fit anyway. Mine has been in for some warranty work and nothing was said.

Thanks Dan for this. Did you find, once the grills were removed, any visible marks caused by the tabs or the bottom of the grill itself?

None at all. I wouldn’t worry too much about removing the grilles if it’s going in for a fuel sender issue. They won’t even look at them.

Worst case they ring you and say they can’t work on it as it’s got grilled on. Tell them you’ll go up and remove them if needs be.

Very reassuring Dan. Fuel gauge issue seems to be a one off (hopefully) so no dealer visit. I’m fitting the grills for a Spain tour in April. Once again many thanks
