56/2007 just turned 34,000..... 34,010 to be precise!!

In the last 30 months I have replaced a radiator hose (common fault), a water pump (pulley sheared off, metal fatigue?, pump itself was like new inside) and a starter motor solenoid (click click click vroom).....

I would say reliability has been good, but I'm not going to say it because I don't want to tempt fate...

Archie.

My 2012 CR manual has done 26,500 miles.

Only 2 parts have failed in my term of ownership from purchase at 900 miles as a stock demo car.

1) the oil pressure relief valve contained in the oil filter housing. It broke when OPC Edinburgh removed the oil filter element at the last oil service. Cost £35.

2) The microswitch at the clutch pedal which registers a depressed clutch when starting. Cost £75.

I choose to have intermediate engine oil and filter changes in-between normal service schedules. Also have had the transmission oil changed as well at 19,000 miles.

My wife and I recently agreed not to update our 09/2006 Cayman S Tip (38,500 miles) for a new 981 at a net cost of £30k as we do not see the point.

But what mileage has your Cayman done? I am aware that Kevan recently changed his which had done 80,000 miles+. What mileages do we have for Caymans?

Also, what has reliability been like, ours has been good to date (fingers crossed!).

Depreciation seems good too. We bought at 3 years old for £30k (it had clocked up 10k miles) now 9 years old worth about £19k = £1,833 per year and, I guess, slowing down, as maintenance costs will start to climb as parts fail/need replacing.

Hi

Got my 2006 Cayman s in March. I've covered about 4000 miles in the last 6 months. It's got 47000 miles on it at present. It has & still is a dream to drive and has never let me down- I've had a few issues but I put that down to general up keep and improvement ( new coil packs, discs & pads etc)

The car has never not started & has never broken down. As for worrying issues I'm not too concerned, if you believe everything you hear on the net you would never own/drive one.

On saying that- when the next service is due I may have a bore scope done but don't consider it a necessity.

It runs a steady temperature & hasn't used a drop of oil since I've owned it.

Cheers steve

23k, just the micro switch on clutch fail, but that was ripped out as I hated it, was never going to pay for a new one to annoy me again !

Hi David.

I've had my Cayman S Gen1 coming up to 3 yrs now.

It was registered 27/9/07 and had done 24,400 when I bought it.

I've added @21,000 miles to it since.

The purchase price was £15,000 with my Mazda 3MPS as part x.

I've done a Go compare and its had valuations at £16,000 + recently (not that I'm going to sell, but its nice to know).

So the depreciation factor has been on the slow side to say the least.

Only probs were a flat battery a couple of winters ago, and an air con re- gas on its first service with me.

I've added a short shifter and a Carnewal plus a terraclean to keep my interest going.

I can see why Kevan wanted an upgrade as he's sampled pdk's on trial, but unless fortunes change for better or worse, then mine's a keeper.

Good decision to keep unless your circs dictate.

See you at the next meet.

Kev

My 2009 Gen II 2.9 which I've owned for 3 months has done about 69.5k now, I've done about 1.5k since I bought it. I'll need to dig through the service history to see whether any significant failures have occurred.

Andrew.

I had my Gen1 for almost 8 years, it had 2,200 on the clock when I bought it and 88,600 when I traded it in for £12,000 but I had had a valuation of £15,000 but then the car I bought had been dropped by £2,000 so not lot of difference and I got the Gen2 I wanted.

During the 86,400 miles I covered in the Gen1 I had the Chrono pack blow which took all of the column switches out, coil packs at about 80,000 miles and gearchange cables three weeks later, I had had both steering ball joints changed one at the OPC the second of which was with a full alignment at CG, otherwise brakes were about due when I sold it as they had previously been replaced at 40K, it also needed a pair of rear tyres soon. I never load an engine below 2,000rpm but regularly take them to peak revs to ensure oil get's everywhere within the engine.

Currently having the Gen2 PDK with the high top gear ratio it does mean changing down in the average 50 limits, it does effect the economy as it's far better at about 85mph in 7th. I've also found that it's easy to hit the limiter in the PDK when in manual mode, especially easy as I was in sport mode at the time.

I'm not generally a motorway cruiser and take the back lanes for more fun regularly, I've done several long European trips including driving the High Alpine Road ( Grossglockner ) visiting Gmund, Mulhouse, Stuttgart several times and Le Mans.

My car on 22k,

bought as approved used car at 6k or thereabouts in May 2014.

Whilst it has had an age related minor service, it has otherwise proved faultless.

Bought new in Sep 13 (981 PDK)and it's just coming up to 39,000 miles. Only snag has been the need to replace the windscreen courtesy of a skip lorry.

Only done 600 miles in my so far and the car has a total of 1500 miles but will soon be changing the oil and filter and car will be going away as don't plan on using it during the winter months

66,000 miles. Bought new in Nov 2006, and one owner (me) to date. Car kept under Porsche warranty so most stuff other than routine maintenance has been fixed without quibble. (oil leaks, coil packs, front suspension arm, radiator hose, air con condenser and other stuff).

Thanks for the replies but I was interested in knowing what high mileage examples were out there?

I never thought of my Gen1 as high mileage and many have far less on them, these cars are driving cars, great for covering long distances in at speed I've done several trips of 400+ miles in a day and got out feeling fine, not a lot of cars which I've driven could I say that about and I once did a drive of 600mls in a beat up van! I was shattered afterwards but ...

The two year old with 39,000mls on it is set to be a high usage car and I hope that Graham keeps it for a long time to show us how it stands up to such use, a year ago I was doing 120miles a day commutes in mine and my other car to save on maintenance otherwise the Cayman would have been on 110,000 when I traded it.

David,

Can't help with high mileage info since my Gen2 CS has only covered 18k miles in the past 6-years of ownership.

Faults have been with the PASM (pinched cable during build), a faulty alarm module and the usual clutch microswitch problem (replaced twice, the second being to the updated spec).

I've also just noticed that the “beak” on the leading edge of the driver’s side window seal has started to split at its tip and would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this failure. Looking at the PET, this will require replacement of the complete door seal.

I've found that the gaskets surrounding the roof edge strips are prone to drooping in hot weather, dropping into the channel.

My CR (61 reg) has just clocked up 36,000 miles, 7000 since July. Great for the long haul and then the twisty bits. No issues other than unexpected patches of corrosion on inside of wheels and the PDK box and differential can get quite agricultural when worked hard (noisy clonks and thumps), but all checked out OK at major service and MOT. Planning some TLC over the winter months but hope to get some more trips too.

Hi Bought my Gen 1 3.4S 2006 reg in March 2012 with 15,000 miles on the clock one local previous owner.

Now just covered 30,000 miles. Doesn't do short journeys and is well loved. Had a new steering rack at 18,000 miles due a very slight oil leak. Other than that only issue has been a stone jammed in the rear brake calliper making one hell of a noise. Luckily I was 500 yards from the Porsche dealer in Bristol at the time.

So car has been great but worries of major failure as widely known do stick in the back of your head. Worth more to me than market value so not planning on changing any time soon. Unless I win the lottery might be tempted then!!!

As far as high mileage Caymans go. They are always on Ebay but never here of an owner.
