Cayman PSE/Sports Exhaust

Hi, Im interested in replacing my standard exhaust on my cayman S with the sports exhaust system offered by porsche. I was wondering whether it is possible to retro fit this to my car? Can anyone recommend where I could buy one from and roughly how much it would cost to buy? Im not really interested in getting an after market system, I like the sound of the sports exhaust system and would like this on my car? Any help on sites/shops I can buy this would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Sonny.

Your OPC will be able to give you a quote and if you are a Club member, you should get a good discount. Try also Porscheshop & speak to Ian http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/

Sorry for the ignorant question but is the retro-fit PSE on the cayman switchable (like the 996/997) ? Does anyone have an idea of cost ?

I have the Carnewal RSR mufflers on my 993 and they are great. Gert at Carnewal is a very nice chap. Do you have the Carnewal mufflers on yours ?

Hello, newbie here. Have not long taken ownership of mark 1 Cayman S, my first Porsche. I love it to bits but can't help but yearn for a more purposeful yet not too anti-social exhaust tone. Would also appreciate some advice on the way to go. Have seen items from Euro Cup, Design Tek, Remus, Super Sprint, Miltek, Borla and the recon cat option from the Belgian chap as mentioned above. What are owners opinions and experiences of the above exhausts? All guidance greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have the factory PSE fitted to my 987 boxster 3.2 which I fitted myself. The unit gives a slightly quieter sound than standard when in quiet mode but a much louder more agressive tone when in bypass. The engine note at tickover is also a deeper sound with the PSE in bypass , but there is no performance gain as it retains the same rear catalyst design.. I did a back to back comparison between a 3.2 987 fitted with the Carnewal exhaust and my PSE and ended up agreeing that the carnewal gave a richer tone and more akin to a 3.6 engine than the PSE. Unlike the cheap aftermarket exhausts the carnewal not only removes the rear cats to give more power but also re tunes the exhaust note to give a rich but not boomy sound. Many of the aftermarket exhausts such as remus and milltek give an unfortunate resonant boom at 3000 rpm which can be tiring on the motorway. Considering a full PSE is well over 2k fitted the 400 pound option for the carnewal works out much more cost effective. There is a write up on [link=http://www.boxa.net]www.boxa.net[/link] under the exhausts section if you do a search which includes sound clips. There is also the option to change the rear tips for a different design or to slide the top sleeve actoss that joins the two rear boxes so a 1mm gap is present on one side. This gives a richer deeper sound sililar to a PSE but at zero cost. Hi berty987, Do you know how the 'sleeve mod' compares with Gert's solution? Is there a big difference in sound?

Gerts solution gives both a sound and performance gain , its also across the rev range whereas the sleeve mod is more noticeable at tickover. I tried the sleeve mod fist to see if I could live with a louder sounding exhaust, then took the plunge and fitted the PSE. Ultimately im now looking at the carnewal solution as to be honest I rarely drive with the PSE off.

Thx Berty987 - if you're interested in selling your PSE to me, just pm me. Seeing as you're looking at the Carnewal solution, maybe we could throw my original stock exhaust into the equation so we're both happy.

Think I'm sold on the Carnewal now. Just hope OPC don't have an issue (notice it!) during service/warranty renewal.

If you do have a warranty claim I'm sure they will go thru your car with a fine tooth comb and cite aftermarket floor mats as the reason to invalidate the warranty.

ORIGINAL: Caymanster Am going across to Gert next Friday for the exhaust mod and sports tips fitment. Will report back.
Fantastic! Look forward to hearing about your results! Are you going to get the sportscats too or just the GT muffler? I'm hoping the muffler alone will make a big enough difference.

Just the GT muffler mod and the sport tips. May get the sport cats done at a later date if the muffler mod isn't loud enough. Will post on Friday afternoon if all goes well.

Ok, just back from a quick trip across to Gert Carnewal. Firstly, what a thoroughly great service. Arrived at 11am, gave the car over to Gert, he showed us to his guest house and told us (Mrs Caymanster with me) to make ourselves at home. 2 hours and a quick snooze on the leather couch, I worked a night shift last night, and the car was done. First impressions were that the look of the RS60 tailpipes is much better than the gen 1 S pipe. Gert warned me that the DME would take a while to adjust to the better airflow so the car wouldn't sound it's best straight away. Still sounded way better when I first turned the key. After settling up (very reasonable for the excellent work and service, a bargain in fact) we said our goodbyes and hit the road again. Every bit of open road or a gap in the traffic was met with a quick blast of the, increasingly, loud pedal and accompanied by a big grin from me. Gert was spot on when he said it would take 60km or so for the full effect to kick in. The car steadily grew in raspiness and volume and then settled at a satisfying yet not too antisocial level. No drone at steady, ahem, motorway speeds either. Suffice to say that our journey back from Gert's to the Eurotunnel was a good 15 minutes quicker than the journey there this morning. Sat nav took us via the Dartford tunnel on the way home because of heavy traffic on the southern and western sections of the M25. You can guess the rest. The sound on full chat in the tunnel gave me goose bumps and drew a thumbs up from a couple of van drivers. That's it really. Thoroughly enjoyed the day. Gert is a top man and his work seems exceptional. May even go back for the 200 cel cats at a later date although I don't want to go too loud. Can't recommend Gert highly enough.

Thanks for the excellent update Caymanster! Fantastic news and happy to report back my GT muffler is currently in transit and should be fitted on Thurs. After everyones comments here. Simply can't wait! Enjoy the car and keep us updated if you do decide to go for the cats ... Although it sounds like it's done the job. Would be interested to hear if anyone has gone back for the sports cats so I/we can get an idea of whether it's worth it or OTT for everyday use.

An interesting thread. Perhaps some of you might be able to tell me if your cars with upgrade exhaust systems have any problems passing noise tests at track days? Thanks.

Haven't tested this yet. Am planning to fairly soon though. Mine is not outrageously loud and I'm pretty sure I've read of others with the same exhaust having no problems. Can't see it failing a 105db drive by test anyway. Will report back when I do make it to a track day.
