Cayman PSE/Sports Exhaust

Just in case anyone is ordering an R, after having mine a month now I think its loud enough without it (much louder than my old Gen I S) so I wouldve saved the cash if I knew!

ORIGINAL: berty987 I have the factory PSE fitted to my 987 boxster 3.2 which I fitted myself. The unit gives a slightly quieter sound than standard when in quiet mode but a much louder more agressive tone when in bypass. The engine note at tickover is also a deeper sound with the PSE in bypass , but there is no performance gain as it retains the same rear catalyst design.. I did a back to back comparison between a 3.2 987 fitted with the Carnewal exhaust and my PSE and ended up agreeing that the carnewal gave a richer tone and more akin to a 3.6 engine than the PSE. Unlike the cheap aftermarket exhausts the carnewal not only removes the rear cats to give more power but also re tunes the exhaust note to give a rich but not boomy sound. Many of the aftermarket exhausts such as remus and milltek give an unfortunate resonant boom at 3000 rpm which can be tiring on the motorway. Considering a full PSE is well over 2k fitted the 400 pound option for the carnewal works out much more cost effective. There is a write up on [link=http://www.boxa.net]www.boxa.net[/link] under the exhausts section if you do a search which includes sound clips. There is also the option to change the rear tips for a different design or to slide the top sleeve actoss that joins the two rear boxes so a 1mm gap is present on one side. This gives a richer deeper sound sililar to a PSE but at zero cost. Guys - had mine done 2 weeks ago .... Covered 500 miles since and it's fully bedded in now. Sounds absolutely wonderful past 4k rpm with a lovely burbling note at idle. I did notice a little bit of drone between 2200-2800 rpm though. Another guy on the planet9 forum also reported the same. Is it just our ears/cars or is this normal? Was a bit surprised seeing many have commented on how there was zero drone. Thankfully, at a 80mph cruise, the car is quieter than before. Interested to hear people's comments...

If you have the carnewal fitted you get a similar PSE sound but without the drone that the PSE gives in loud mode. The cayman is far more susceptible to drone by virtue of having a closed cockpit , the rear hatch and open rear boot void allowing a certain amount of exhaust note into the cabin plus creates resonance of what sound there is. Its the same with road / tyre noise when comparing boxster against cayman. I'm surprised no one has come up with a cover or screen to reduce the reverb from the open rear boot in a cayman. Its also worth checking the exhaust hangars (the diamond lattice rod assembly that supports the rear silencers) are nicely tensioned, if these are slack or not tensioned you get more exhaust resonance in the car .

Hi, I am considering buying a Porsche Sports Exhaust system for my Cayman S. I would rather purchase the PSE from an OPC so it doesn’t affect my warranty. Would you consider it worth spending the money? I would be grateful for any advice if anyone has purchased a PSE for their Cayman. I noticed on the quotation from the OPC that a switch is also fitted on the centre console presumably so the system can be turned off! Thanks. Simon

You don't say how much you're paying for the PSE, but I'm guessing it's between £2k and £3k. Given that the system from Carnewal is considered (by popular opinion) to be superior, €390 seems much better value. I'm off to get mine done tomorrow [:)]

If anyone's interested in having a bypass mod done, [link=http://www.rpmtechnik.co.uk/]RPM near Cheddington[/link] are now offering this service. I've heard it on their "demo" Boxster Clubsport, albeit stationary, and it sounds quite, er, fruity.

Unless you are sticking with the Porsche warranty that is.

Mine is still under he manufacturers warranty, but I'm not that bothered to be honest. The problem is that Porsche can attach all sorts of conditions to their extended warranties that the law prevents them applying to the statutory manufacturers warranty. I won't be buying the extended warranty when the time comes.

The price for the PSE is around £2,200.00 – Has anyone heard the noise generated by the sports exhaust!
