Cayman Rear Tyre Wear

Hi Cliff, We met in Honfleur. My local tyre specialist has a Hunter system Using cameras and I know the guy who does the checking. I called Chris at CoG and he said there is a tendency for the cars to settle over time and need a realignment. He asked me if it smells of rubber after a run which is a sign of to much toe in but mine has always done that. Chris

My local tyre specialist checked the rear tyre wear and seems I was measuring the outer depth in the wrong place. The outer measurement is taken on the diagonal tread. The rears on mine are actually 4 outer, 3 middle and 4 inner on both sides and he said this is very even and there is nothing wrong with the alignment front or rear. New rears will be needed in a few thousand miles at 10-12k miles which he said is about average and Pirellis are not especially poor wearers, given they are soft compound and very grippy. You live and learn!

ORIGINAL: BrianJ Just rereading the above - it wasn't the camber that was the main problem on mine, it was the toe-in, which had somehow got to 34' and 23' on the rears vs the 5' +/- 5' from Richard's table (mine non-PASM). Fuel consumption has also improved as well as handling.
Brian, What was the OPC's position on this problem as it sounds like Jeff's and mine are suffering the same change in wear pattern as yours? Didnt they take any responsibility for the adverse tyre wear and offer you a good deal on some new ones? Can't adjusting toe-in and camber angles be done by my local tyre specialist to the correct figures as Richard posted? Is it worth going to CoG as they are a long way away?
I didn't contact the OPC. The car had done 36k miles on all kinds of roads and I didn't see too much point in wasting a day and 120 miles getting an OPC view when I could have the 4-wheel alignment checked for free and corrected for £70 at a specialist only 20 mins away. And by then I had already replaced the tyres at a better price than the OPC.
